| 1 Or il arriva, pendant qu'Apollo était à Corinthe, que Paul, ayant parcouru les provinces supérieures, vint à Ephèse et trouva quelques disciples. | 1 And it came to pass, while Apollo was at Corinth, that Paul having passed through the upper coasts, came to Ephesus, and found certain disciples. |
| 2 Et il leur dit: Avez-vous reçu l'Esprit-Saint en devenant croyants? Mais ils lui répondirent: Nous n'avons pas même entendu dire s'il y a un Esprit-Saint. | 2 And he said to them: Have you received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? But they said to him: We have not so much as heard whether there be a Holy Ghost. |
| 3 Il leur dit: Quel baptême avez-vous donc reçu? Il dirent: Le baptême de Jean. | 3 And he said: In what then were you baptized? Who said: In John's baptism. |
| 4 Alors Paul dit: Jean a baptisé le peuple du baptême de pénitence, en disant de croire en Celui qui venait après lui, c'est-à-dire en Jésus. | 4 Then Paul said: John baptized the people with the baptism of penance, saying: That they should believe in him who was to come after him, that is to say, in Jesus. |
| 5 Lorsqu'ils eurent entendu cela, ils furent baptisés au nom du Seigneur Jésus. | 5 Having heard these things, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. |
| 6 Et après que Paul leur eut imposé les mains, l'Esprit-Saint vint sur eux; et ils parlaient diverses langues et prophétisaient. | 6 And when Paul had imposed his hands on them, the Holy Ghost came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied. |
| 7 Ils étaient en tout environ douze hommes. | 7 And all the men were about twelve. |
| 8 Etant entré dans la synagogue, il parla avec assurance pendant trois mois, discutant et persuadant au sujet du royaume de Dieu. | 8 And entering into the synagogue, he spoke boldly for the space of three months, disputing and exhorting concerning the kingdom of God. |
| 9 Mais comme quelques-uns s'endurcissaient et refusaient de croire, décriant la voie du Seigneur devant la multitude, il se retira d'eux, sépara les disciples, et il enseignait tous les jours dans l'école d'un certain Tyrannos. | 9 But when some were hardened, and believed not, speaking evil of the way of the Lord, before the multitude, departing from them, he separated the disciples, disputing daily in the school of one Tyrannus. |
| 10 Cela eut lieu pendant deux ans, de sorte que tous ceux qui habitaient en Asie, Juifs et Gentils, entendirent la parole du Seigneur. | 10 And this continued for the space of two years, so that all they who dwelt in Asia, heard the word of the Lord, both Jews and Gentiles. |
| 11 Et Dieu faisait des miracles extraordinaires par la main de Paul; | 11 And God wrought by the hand of Paul more than common miracles. |
| 12 à ce point qu'on appliquait sur les malades des mouchoirs et des ceintures qu'il avait portés, et leurs maladies s'éloignaient, et les mauvais esprits sortaient. | 12 So that even there were brought from his body to the sick, handkerchiefs and aprons, and the diseases departed from them, and the wicked spirits went out of them. |
| 13 Alors quelques exorcistes juifs, qui allaient de lieu en lieu, essayèrent aussi d'invoquer le nom du Seigneur Jésus sur ceux qui avaient des esprits mauvais, en disant: Je vous adjure par Jésus, que Paul prêche. | 13 Now some also of the Jewish exorcists who went about, attempted to invoke over them that had evil spirits, the name of the Lord Jesus, saying: I conjure you by Jesus, whom Paul preacheth. |
| 14 C'étaient sept fils du Juif Scéva, prince des prêtres, qui faisaient cela. | 14 And there were certain men, seven sons of Sceva, a Jew, a chief priest, that did this. |
| 15 Mais l'esprit mauvais leur répondit: Je connais Jésus, et je sais qui est Paul; mais vous, qui êtes-vous? | 15 But the wicked spirit, answering, said to them: Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you? |
| 16 Et s'élançant sur eux, l'homme en qui était le démon très mauvais se rendit maître de deux d'entre eux; il les maltraita si fort, qu'ils s'enfuirent nus et blessés de cette maison. | 16 And the man in whom the wicked spirit was, leaping upon them, and mastering them both, prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded. |
| 17 Cela fut connu de tous les Juifs et de tous les gentils qui habitaient à Ephèse; et ils furent tous saisis de crainte, et le nom du Seigneur Jésus fut glorifié. | 17 And this became known to all the Jews and the Gentiles that dwelt at Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified. |
| 18 Beaucoup de croyants venaient, confessant et déclarant ce qu'ils avaient fait. | 18 And many of them that believed, came confessing and declaring their deeds. |
| 19 Beaucoup de ceux qui avaient exercé les arts magiques apportèrent leurs livres et les brûlèrent devant tout le monde; et quand on en eut supputé le prix, on trouva la somme de cinquante mille deniers. | 19 And many of them who had followed curious arts, brought together their books, and burnt them before all; and counting the price of them, they found the money to be fifty thousand pieces of silver. |
| 20 Ainsi la parole de Dieu croissait avec force et s'affermissait. | 20 So mightily grew the word of God, and was confirmed. |
| 21 Ces choses accomplies, Paul se proposa, poussé par l'Esprit, de traverser la Macédoine et l'Achaïe, et d'aller à Jérusalem; il disait: Après que j'aurai été là, il faut que je voie aussi Rome. | 21 And when these things were ended, Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying: After I have been there, I must see Rome also. |
| 22 Et envoyant en Macédoine deux de ceux qui l'assistaient, Timothée et Eraste, il demeura pour quelque temps en Asie. | 22 And sending into Macedonia two of them that ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus, he himself remained for a time in Asia. |
| 23 Mais il y eut en ce temps-là un grand trouble au sujet de la voie du Seigneur. | 23 Now at that time there arose no small disturbance about the way of the Lord. |
| 24 Car un certain orfèvre nommé Démétrius, en faisant de petits temples de Diane en argent, procurait aux ouvriers un gain considérable. | 24 For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver temples for Diana, brought no small gain to the craftsmen; |
| 25 Les assemblant avec les artisans du même métier, il dit: Hommes, vous savez que c'est de cette industrie que vient votre gain; | 25 Whom he calling together, with the workmen of like occupation, said: Sirs, you know that our gain is by this trade; |
| 26 et vous voyez, et vous entendez que non seulement à Ephèse, mais presque dans toute l'Asie, ce Paul persuade et détourne un grand nombre de personnes, en disant: Ce ne sont pas des dieux, ceux qui sont faits par la main des hommes. | 26 And you see and hear, that this Paul by persuasion hath drawn away a great multitude, not only of Ephesus, but almost of all Asia, saying: They are not gods which are made by hands. |
| 27 Et il n'y a pas seulement péril pour nous que notre industrie ne tombe en discrédit, mais le temple de la grande Diane ne sera tenu pour rien, et la majesté ce celle que toute l'Asie et tout l'univers honorent commencera à s'anéantir. | 27 So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought, but also the temple of great Diana shall be reputed for nothing; yea, and her majesty shall begin to be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth. |
| 28 Ayant entendu ces paroles, ils furent remplis de colère, et ils s'écrièrent: Grande est la Diane des Ephésiens. | 28 Having heard these things, they were full of anger, and cried out, saying: Great is Diana of the Ephesians. |
| 29 La ville fut remplie de confusion; et d'un commun accord ils se précipitèrent au théâtre, entraînant Gaïus et Aristarque, Macédoniens, compagnons de Paul. | 29 And the whole city was filled with confusion; and having caught Gaius and Aristarchus, men of Macedonia, Paul's companions, they rushed with one accord into the theatre. |
| 30 Paul voulait se montrer au peuple; mais les disciples ne le permirent pas. | 30 And when Paul would have entered in unto the people, the disciples suffered him not. |
| 31 Quelques-uns même des asiarques, qui étaient ses amis, envoyèrent vers lui, pour le prier de ne pas se présenter au théâtre. | 31 And some also of the rulers of Asia, who were his friends, sent unto him, desiring that he would not venture himself into the theatre. |
| 32 Cependant les uns criaient une chose, les autres une autre; car l'assemblée était confuse, et la plupart ne savaient pas pourquoi ils s'étaient réunis. | 32 Now some cried one thing, some another. For the assembly was confused, and the greater part knew not for what cause they were come together. |
| 33 On fit sortir de la foule Alexandre, que les Juifs poussaient en avant. Cet Alexandre, ayant demandé le silence avec la main, voulait s'expliquer devant le peuple. | 33 And they drew forth Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews thrusting him forward. And Alexander beckoning with his hand for silence, would have given the people satisfaction. |
| 34 Mais dès qu'ils eurent reconnu qu'il était Juif, tous, d'une seule voix, crièrent pendant près de deux heures: Grande est la Diane des Ephésiens! | 34 But as soon as they perceived him to be a Jew, all with one voice, for the space of about two hours, cried out: Great is Diana of the Ephesians. |
| 35 Lorsque le scribe eut apaisé la foule, il dit: Habitants d'Ephèse, quel est celui des hommes qui ignore que la ville d'Ephèse est vouée au culte de la grande Diane, fille de Jupiter? | 35 And when the town clerk had appeased the multitudes, he said: Ye men of Ephesus, what man is there that knoweth not that the city of the Ephesians is a worshipper of the great Diana, and of Jupiter's offspring. |
| 36 Puis donc qu'on ne peut le contester, vous devez demeurer calmes, et ne rien faire inconsidérément. | 36 For as much therefore as these things cannot be contradicted, you ought to be quiet, and to do nothing rashly. |
| 37 Car vous avez amené ces hommes, qui ne sont ni des sacrilèges, ni des blasphémateurs de votre déesse. | 37 For you have brought hither these men, who are neither guilty of sacrilege, nor of blasphemy against your goddess. |
| 38 Que si Démétrius, et les artisans qui sont avec lui, ont à se plaindre de quelqu'un, des audiences publiques se tiennent, et il y a des proconsuls: qu'ils s'assignent les uns les autres. | 38 But if Demetrius and the craftsmen that are with him, have a matter against any man, the courts of justice are open, and there are proconsuls: let them accuse one another. |
| 39 Mais si vous avez une autre affaire à proposer, on pourrait en décider dans une assemblée légitime. | 39 And if you inquire after any other matter, it may be decided in a lawful assembly. |
| 40 Car nous risquons d'être accusés de sédition pour ce qui s'est passé aujourd'hui, car nous n'avons aucune bonne raison à alléguer pour justifier cet attroupement. Quand il eut dit cela, il congédia l'assemblée. | 40 For we are even in danger to be called in question for this day's uproar, there being no man guilty (of whom we may give account) of this concourse. And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly. |
