| 1 S'il s'élève au milieu de vous un prophète, ou quelqu'un qui dise qu'il a eu une vision en songe, et qui prédise quelque chose d'extraordinaire et de prodigieux, | 1 If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, |
| 2 et que ce qu'il avait prédit soit arrivé, et qu'il vous dise en même temps: Allons, suivons des dieux étrangers qui vous étaient inconnus, et servons-les; | 2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; |
| 3 vous n'écouterez point les paroles de ce prophète ou de cet inventeur de visions et de songes; parce que le Seigneur votre Dieu vous tente, afin qu'il paraisse clairement si, oui ou non, vous L'aimez de tout votre coeur et de toute votre âme. | 3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul. |
| 4 Suivez le Seigneur votre Dieu, craignez-Le, gardez Ses commandements, écoutez Sa voix, servez-Le, et attachez-vous à Lui seul; | 4 Ye shall walk after the LORD your God, and fear him, and keep his commandments, and obey his voice, and ye shall serve him, and cleave unto him. |
| 5 mais que ce prophète et cet inventeur de songes soit puni de mort, parce qu'il vous a parlé pour vous détourner du Seigneur votre Dieu, qui vous a tirés de l'Egypte, et qui vous a rachetés du séjour de servitude; et pour vous détourner de la voie que le Seigneur votre Dieu vous a prescrite; et vous ôterez ainsi le mal du milieu de vous. | 5 And that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams, shall be put to death; because he hath spoken to turn you away from the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, to thrust thee out of the way which the LORD thy God commanded thee to walk in. So shalt thou put the evil away from the midst of thee. |
| 6 Si votre frère, fils de votre mère, ou votre fils, ou votre fille, ou votre femme qui vous est si chère, ou votre ami que vous aimez comme votre âme, veut vous persuader et vient vous dire en secret: Allons, et servons les dieux étrangers qui vous sont inconnus comme ils l'ont été à vos pères, | 6 If thy brother, the son of thy mother, or thy son, or thy daughter, or the wife of thy bosom, or thy friend, which is as thine own soul, entice thee secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which thou hast not known, thou, nor thy fathers; |
| 7 les dieux de toutes les nations dont nous sommes environnés, soit de près, soit de loin, depuis une extrémité de la terre jusqu'à l'autre; | 7 Namely, of the gods of the people which are round about you, nigh unto thee, or far off from thee, from the one end of the earth even unto the other end of the earth; |
| 8 ne vous rendez point à ses persuasions, et ne l'écoutez pas; et ne soyez pas d'aucune compassion à son sujet; ne l'épargnez point, et ne tenez point secret ce qu'il aura dit: | 8 Thou shalt not consent unto him, nor hearken unto him; neither shall thine eye pity him, neither shalt thou spare, neither shalt thou conceal him: |
| 9 mais tuez-le aussitôt. Que votre main lui donne le premier coup, et que tout le peuple le frappe ensuite. | 9 But thou shalt surely kill him; thine hand shall be first upon him to put him to death, and afterwards the hand of all the people. |
| 10 Qu'il périsse accablé de pierres, parce qu'il a voulu vous détourner du Seigneur votre Dieu, qui vous a tiré de l'Egypte et de la maison de servitude; | 10 And thou shalt stone him with stones, that he die; because he hath sought to thrust thee away from the LORD thy God, which brought thee out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage. |
| 11 afin que tout Israël, entendant cet exemple, soit saisi de crainte, et qu'il ne se trouve plus personne qui ose entreprendre rien de semblable. | 11 And all Israel shall hear, and fear, and shall do no more any such wickedness as this is among you. |
| 12 Si dans quelqu'une de vos villes, que le Seigneur votre Dieu vous aura données pour les habiter, vous entendez dire à quelques-uns: | 12 If thou shalt hear say in one of thy cities, which the LORD thy God hath given thee to dwell there, saying, |
| 13 Des enfants de Bélial sont sortis du milieu de vous, et ont perverti les habitants de leur ville, en leur disant: Allons, et servons les dieux étrangers qui vous sont inconnus, | 13 Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known; |
| 14 informez-vous avec tout le soin possible de la vérité de la chose, et après l'avoir connue, si vous trouvez que ce qu'on vous avait dit est certain, et que cette abomination a été commise effectivement, | 14 Then shalt thou inquire, and make search, and ask diligently; and, behold, if it be truth, and the thing certain, that such abomination is wrought among you; |
| 15 vous ferez passer aussitôt au fil de l'épée les habitants de cette ville, et vous le détruirez avec tout ce qui s'y rencontrera, même les animaux. | 15 Thou shalt surely smite the inhabitants of that city with the edge of the sword, destroying it utterly, and all that is therein, and the cattle thereof, with the edge of the sword. |
| 16 Vous amasserez aussi au milieu des rues tous les meubles qui s'y trouveront, et vous les brûlerez avec la ville, consumant tout en l'honneur du Seigneur votre Dieu, en sorte que cette ville devienne comme un tombeau éternel. Elle ne sera jamais bâtie, | 16 And thou shalt gather all the spoil of it into the midst of the street thereof, and shalt burn with fire the city, and all the spoil thereof every whit, for the LORD thy God: and it shall be an heap for ever; it shall not be built again. |
| 17 et il ne demeurera rien dans vos mains de cet anathème, afin que le Seigneur apaise Sa colère et Sa fureur, qu'il ait pitié de vous, et qu'Il vous multiplie comme Il l'a juré à vos pères, | 17 And there shall cleave nought of the cursed thing to thine hand: that the LORD may turn from the fierceness of his anger, and shew thee mercy, and have compassion upon thee, and multiply thee, as he hath sworn unto thy fathers; |
| 18 tant que vous écouterez la voix du Seigneur votre Dieu, et que vous observerez toutes Ses ordonnances que je vous prescris aujourd'hui, afin que vous fassiez ce qui est agréable aux yeux du Seigneur votre Dieu. | 18 When thou shalt hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, to keep all his commandments which I command thee this day, to do that which is right in the eyes of the LORD thy God. |
