| 1 En ces jours-là, Jean-Baptiste vint, prêchant dans le désert de Judée, | 1 And in those days cometh John the Baptist preaching in the desert of Judea. |
| 2 et disant: Faites pénitence, car le royaume des Cieux est proche. | 2 And saying: Do penance: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand. |
| 3 C'est lui qui a été désigné par le prophète Isaïe, lorsqu'il dit: Voix de celui qui crie dans le désert: Préparez le chemin du Seigneur, rendez droit Ses sentiers. | 3 For this is he that was spoken of by Isaias the prophet, saying: A voice of one crying in the desert, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight his paths. |
| 4 Or Jean avait un vêtement de poils de chameau et une ceinture de cuir autour de ses reins; et sa nourriture était des sauterelles et du miel sauvage. | 4 And the same John had his garment of camels' hair, and a leathern girdle about his loins: and his meat was locusts and wild honey. |
| 5 Alors Jérusalem, et toute la Judée, et tout le pays des environs du Jourdain, venaient à lui; | 5 Then went out to him Jerusalem and all Judea, and all the country about Jordan: |
| 6 et ils étaient baptisés par lui dans le Jourdain, confessant leurs péchés. | 6 And were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins. |
| 7 Mais voyant beaucoup de pharisiens et de sadducéens qui venaient à son baptême, il leur dit: Race de vipères, qui vous a appris à fuir la colère qui va venir? | 7 And seeing many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them: Ye brood of vipers, who hath shewed you to flee from the wrath to come? |
| 8 Faites donc de dignes fruits de pénitence. | 8 Bring forth therefore fruit worthy of penance. |
| 9 Et ne prétendez pas dire en vous-mêmes: Nous avons Abraham pour père. Car je vous déclare que Dieu peut susciter de ces pierres des enfants à Abraham. | 9 And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham for our father. For I tell you that God is able of these stones to raise up children to Abraham. |
| 10 Car déjà la cognée est mise à la racine des arbres; tout arbre donc qui ne produit pas de bon fruit sera coupé et jeté au feu. | 10 For now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that doth not yield good fruit, shall be cut down, and cast into the fire. |
| 11 Moi, je vous baptise dans l'eau, pour la pénitence; mais Celui qui doit venir après moi est plus puissant que moi, et je ne suis pas digne de porter Ses sancales. Lui, Il vous baptisera dans l'Esprit-Saint et dans le feu. | 11 I indeed baptize you in the water unto penance, but he that shall come after me, is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear; he shall baptize you in the Holy Ghost and fire. |
| 12 Il a Son van dans Sa main, et Il nettoiera Son aire; et Il amassera Son blé dans le grenier, mais Il brûlera la paille dans un feu qui ne s'éteindra pas. | 12 Whose fan is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his floor and gather his wheat into the barn; but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire. |
| 13 Alors Jésus vint de la Galilée au Jourdain, auprès de Jean, pour être baptisé par lui. | 13 Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to the Jordan, unto John, to be baptized by him. |
| 14 Mais Jean L'écartait, en disant: C'est moi qui dois être baptisé par Vous, et Vous venez à moi! | 14 But John stayed him, saying: I ought to be baptized by thee, and comest thou to me? |
| 15 Mais Jésus, répondant, lui dit: Laisse faire maintenant; car c'est ainsi qu'il convient que nous accomplissions toute justice. Alors Jean Le laissa faire. | 15 And Jesus answering, said to him: Suffer it to be so now. For so it becometh us to fulfill all justice. Then he suffered him. |
| 16 Or Jésus, ayant été baptisé, sortit aussitôt hors de l'eau. Et voici que les cieux Lui furent ouverts, et il vit l'Esprit de Dieu qui descendait comme une colombe, et qui vint sur Lui. | 16 And Jesus being baptized, forthwith came out of the water: and lo, the heavens were opened to him: and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming upon him. |
| 17 Et voici qu'une voix du Ciel disait: Celui-ci est Mon Fils bien-aimé, en qui Je Me suis complu. | 17 And behold a voice from heaven, saying: This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. |
