| 1 Balaam, voyant que le Seigneur voulait qu'il bénît Israël, n'alla plus comme auparavant pour chercher des augures; mais, tournant le visage vers le désert, | 1 And when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he went not, as at other times, to seek for enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness. |
| 2 et élevant les yeux, il vit Israël campé dans ses tentes, et distingué par chaque tribu. Alors l'Esprit de Dieu s'étant saisi de lui, | 2 And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel abiding in his tents according to their tribes; and the spirit of God came upon him. |
| 3 il commença à prophétiser, et à dire: Voici ce que dit Balaam, fils de Béor; voici ce que dit l'homme qui a l'oeil fermé; | 3 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said: |
| 4 voici ce que dit celui qui entend les paroles de Dieu, qui a vu les visions du Tout-Puissant, qui tombe, et qui en tombant a les yeux ouverts: | 4 He hath said, which heard the words of God, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open: |
| 5 Que vos pavillons sont beaux, ô Jacob! que vos tentes sont belles, ô Israël! | 5 How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, and thy tabernacles, O Israel! |
| 6 Elles sont comme des vallées couvertes de grands arbres; comme des jardins le long des fleuves, toujours arrosés d'eau; comme des tentes que le Seigneur même a affermies; comme des cèdres plantés sur le bord des eaux. | 6 As the valleys are they spread forth, as gardens by the river's side, as the trees of lign aloes which the LORD hath planted, and as cedar trees beside the waters. |
| 7 L'eau coulera toujours de son seau, et sa postérité se multipliera comme l'eau des fleuves. Son roi sera rejeté à cause d'Agag, et le royaume lui sera enlevé. | 7 He shall pour the water out of his buckets, and his seed shall be in many waters, and his king shall be higher than Agag, and his kingdom shall be exalted. |
| 8 Dieu l'a fait sortir de l'Egypte, et sa force est semblable à celle du rhinocéros. Ils dévoreront les peuples qui seront leurs ennemis, ils briseront leurs os, et les perceront d'outre en outre avec leurs flèches. | 8 God brought him forth out of Egypt; he hath as it were the strength of an unicorn: he shall eat up the nations his enemies, and shall break their bones, and pierce them through with his arrows. |
| 9 Quand il se couche, il dort comme un lion, et comme une lionne que personne n'oserait éveiller. Celui qui te bénira sera béni lui-même, et celui qui te mauridra sera regardé comme maudit. | 9 He couched, he lay down as a lion, and as a great lion: who shall stir him up? Blessed is he that blesseth thee, and cursed is he that curseth thee. |
| 10 Balac, s'irritant contre Balaam, frappa des mains, et lui dit: Je vous avais fait venir pour maudire mes ennemis, et vous les avez au contraire bénis par trois fois. | 10 And Balak's anger was kindled against Balaam, and he smote his hands together: and Balak said unto Balaam, I called thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast altogether blessed them these three times. |
| 11 Retournez en votre maison. J'avais résolu de vous faire des présents magnifiques; mais le Seigneur vous a privé de la récompense que je vous avais destinée. | 11 Therefore now flee thou to thy place: I thought to promote thee unto great honour; but, lo, the LORD hath kept thee back from honour. |
| 12 Balaam répondit à Balac: N'ai-je pas dit à vos ambassadeurs que vous m'avez envoyés: | 12 And Balaam said unto Balak, Spake I not also to thy messengers which thou sentest unto me, saying, |
| 13 Quand Balac me donnerait plein sa maison d'or et d'argent, je ne pourrais pas outrepasser les ordres du Seigneur mon Dieu, pour inventer la moindre chose de mon propre esprit ou en bien ou en mal; mais que je dirais tout ce que le Seigneur m'aurait dit? | 13 If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the commandment of the LORD, to do either good or bad of mine own mind; but what the LORD saith, that will I speak? |
| 14 Néanmoins, en m'en retournant dans mon pays, je vous donnerai un conseil, afin que vous sachiez ce que votre peuple pourra faire enfin contre celui-ci. | 14 And now, behold, I go unto my people: come therefore, and I will advertise thee what this people shall do to thy people in the latter days. |
| 15 Il recommença donc à prophétiser de nouveau, en disant: Voici ce que dit Balaam, fils de Béor; voici ce que dit l'homme dont l'oeil est fermé; | 15 And he took up his parable, and said, Balaam the son of Beor hath said, and the man whose eyes are open hath said: |
| 16 voici ce que dit celui qui entend les paroles de Dieu, qui connaît la doctrine du Très-Haut, qui voit les visions du Tout-Puissant, et qui en tombant a les yeux ouverts: | 16 He hath said, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open: |
| 17 Je le verrai, mais non maintenant: je le considérerai, mais non pas de près. Une étoile sortira de Jacob, un sceptre s'élèvera d'Israël; et il frappera les chefs de Moab, et ruinera tous les enfants de Seth. | 17 I shall see him, but not now: I shall behold him, but not nigh: there shall come a Star out of Jacob, and a Sceptre shall rise out of Israel, and shall smite the corners of Moab, and destroy all the children of Sheth. |
| 18 Il possédera l'Idumée, l'héritage de Séïr passera à ses ennemis, et Israël agira avec grand courage. | 18 And Edom shall be a possession, Seir also shall be a possession for his enemies; and Israel shall do valiantly. |
| 19 Il sortira de Jacob un dominateur, qui perdra les restes de la cité. | 19 Out of Jacob shall come he that shall have dominion, and shall destroy him that remaineth of the city. |
| 20 Et ayant vu Amalec, il fut saisi de l'esprit prophétique, et il dit: Amalec a été le premier des peuples ennemis d'Israël, et à la fin il périra. | 20 And when he looked on Amalek, he took up his parable, and said, Amalek was the first of the nations; but his latter end shall be that he perish for ever. |
| 21 Il vit aussi les Cinéens, et, prophétisant, il dit: Le lieu où vous demeurez est fort; mais quoique vous ayez établi votre nid dans la pierre, | 21 And he looked on the Kenites, and took up his parable, and said, Strong is thy dwellingplace, and thou puttest thy nest in a rock. |
| 22 et que vous ayez été choisis de la race de Cin, combien de temps pourrez-vous subsister? Car l'Assyrien s'emparera de vous. | 22 Nevertheless the Kenite shall be wasted, until Asshur shall carry thee away captive. |
| 23 Il prophétisa encore en disant: Hélas! qui vivra quand Dieu fera ces choses? | 23 And he took up his parable, and said, Alas, who shall live when God doeth this! |
| 24 Ils viendront d'Italie dans des vaisseaux; ils vaincront les Assyriens, ils ruineront les Hébreux, et à la fin ils périront aussi eux-mêmes. | 24 And ships shall come from the coast of Chittim, and shall afflict Asshur, and shall afflict Eber, and he also shall perish for ever. |
| 25 Après cela, Balaam se leva et s'en retourna dans son pays. Balac aussi s'en retourna par le même chemin qu'il était venu. | 25 And Balaam rose up, and went and returned to his place: and Balak also went his way. |
