| 1 Au premier mois de la quarantième année, toute la multitude des enfants d'Israël vint au désert de Sin; et le peuple demeura à Cadès. Là mourut Marie, et elle fut ensevelie au même lieu. | 1 And the children of Israel, and all the multitude came into the desert of Sin, in the first month: and the people abode in Cades. And Mary died there, and was buried in the same place. |
| 2 Et comme le peuple manquait d'eau, ils s'assemblèrent contre Moïse et Aaron; | 2 And the people wanting water, came together against Moses and Aaron: |
| 3 et ayant excité une sédition, ils leur dirent: Plût à Dieu que nous eussions péri avec nos frères devant le Seigneur! | 3 And making a sedition, they said: Would God we had perished among our brethren before the Lord. |
| 4 Pourquoi avez-vous fait venir le peuple du Seigneur dans ce désert, afin que nous mourions, nous et nos bêtes? | 4 Why have you brought out the church of the Lord into the wilderness, that both we and our cattle should die? |
| 5 Pourquoi nous avez-vous fait sortir de l'Egypte, et nous avez-vous amenés en ce lieu affreux, où l'on ne peut semer; où ni les figuiers, ni les vignes, ni les grenadiers ne peuvent venir, et où l'on ne trouve pas même d'eau pour boire? | 5 Why have you made us come up out of Egypt, and have brought us into this wretched place which cannot be sowed, nor bringeth forth figs, nor vines, nor pomegranates, neither is there any water to drink? |
| 6 Moïse et Aaron, ayant quitté le peuple, entrèrent dans le tabernacle de l'alliance, et, s'étant jetés le visage contre terre, ils crièrent au Seigneur, et lui dirent: Seigneur Dieu, écoutez le cri de ce peuple, et ouvrez-leur Votre trésor, ouvrez-leur la source d'eau vive, afin qu'étant désaltérés, ils cessèrent de murmurer. Alors la gloire du Seigneur parut au-dessus d'eux. | 6 And Moses and Aaron leaving the multitude, went into the tabernacle of the covenant, and fell flat upon the ground, and cried to the Lord, and said: O Lord God, hear the cry of this people, and open to them thy treasure, a fountain of living water, that being satisfied, they may cease to murmur. And the glory of the Lord appeared over them. |
| 7 Et le Seigneur parla à Moïse, et lui dit: | 7 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying: |
| 8 Prenez votre verge, et assemblez le peuple, vous et votre frère Aaron; et parlez à la pierre devant eux, et elle vous donnera des eaux. Et lorsque vous aurez fait sortir l'eau de la pierre, tout le peuple boira et ses bêtes aussi. | 8 Take the rod, and assemble the people together, thou and Aaron thy brother, and speak to the rock before them, and it shall yield waters. And when thou hast brought forth water out of the rock, all the multitude and their cattle shall drink. |
| 9 Moïse prit donc la verge qui était devant le Seigneur, selon qu'Il le lui avait ordonné, | 9 Moses therefore took the rod, which was before the Lord, as he had commanded him, |
| 10 et ayant assemblé le peuple devant la pierre, il leur dit: Ecoutez, rebelles et incrédules. Pourrons-nous nous faire sortir de l'eau de cette pierre? | 10 And having gathered together the multitude before the rock, he said to them: Hear, ye rebellious and incredulous: Can we bring you forth water out of this rock? |
| 11 Moïse leva ensuite la main, et ayant frappé deux fois la pierre avec sa verge, il en sortit une grande abondance d'eau, en sorte que le peuple eut à boire, et les bêtes aussi. | 11 And when Moses had lifted up his hand, and struck the rook twice with the rod, there came forth water in great abundance, so that the people and their cattle drank, |
| 12 En même temps, le Seigneur dit à Moïse et à Aaron: Parce que vous ne M'avez pas cru, et que vous ne M'avez pas sanctifié devant les enfants d'Israël, vous ne ferez point entrer ce peuple dans la terre que Je leur donnerai. | 12 And the Lord said to Moses and Aaron: Because you have not believed me, to sanctify me before the children of Israel, you shall not bring these people into the land, which I will give them. |
| 13 C'est là l'eau de contradiction, où les enfants d'Israël murmurèrent contre le Seigneur, et où Il fit paraître Sa puissance et Sa sainteté au milieu d'eux. | 13 This is the Water of contradiction, where the children of Israel strove with words against the Lord, and he was sanctified in them. |
| 14 Cependant Moïse envoya de Cadès des embassadeurs au roi d'Edom pour lui dire: Voici ce que vous mande votre frère Israël. Vous savez tous les maux que nous avons soufferts; | 14 In the mean time Moses sent messengers from Cades to the king of Edom, to say: Thus saith thy brother Israel: Thou knowest all the labour that hath come upon us: |
| 15 comment nos pères étant descendus en Egypte, nous y avons habité longtemps, et les Egyptiens nous ont affligés, nous et nos pères; | 15 In what manner our fathers went down into Egypt, and there we dwelt a long time, and the Egyptians afflicted us and our fathers. |
| 16 et comment enfin ayant crié au Seigneur, Il nous a exaucés et a envoyé Son Ange, qui nous a fait sortir de l'Egypte. Nous sommes maintenant dans la ville de Cadès, qui est à l'extrémité de votre royaume. | 16 And how we cried to the Lord, and he heard us, and sent an angel, who hath brought us out of Egypt. Lo, we are now in the city of Cades, which is in the uttermost of thy borders, |
| 17 Nous vous conjurons de nous permettre de passer par votre pays. Nous n'irons point à travers les champs ni dans les vignes, et nous ne boirons point des eaux de vos puits; mais nous marcherons par le chemin public, sans nous détourner ni à droite ni à gauche, jusqu'à ce que nous soyons passés hors de vos terres. | 17 And we beseech thee that we may have leave to pass through thy country. We will not go through the fields, nor through the vineyards, we will not drink the waters of thy wells, but we will go by the common highway, neither turning aside to the right hand, nor to the left, till we are past thy borders. |
| 18 Edom leur répondit: Vous ne passerez point sur mes terres, autrement j'irai en armes au-devant de vous. | 18 And Edom answered them: Thou shalt not pass by me: if thou dost I will come out armed against thee. |
| 19 Les enfants d'Israël lui répondirent: Nous marchrons par le chemin ordinaire; et si nous buvons de vos eaux, nous et nos troupeaux, nous payerons ce qui sera juste; il n'y aura point de difficulté pour le prix; souffrez seulement que nous passions sans nous arrêter. | 19 And the children of Israel said: We will go by the beaten way: and if we and our cattle drink of thy waters, we will give thee what is just: there shall be no difficulty in the price, only let us pass speedily. |
| 20 Mais il répondit: Vous ne passerez point. Et aussitôt il marcha au-devant d'eux avec une multitude infinie et une puissante armée; | 20 But he answered: Thou shalt not pass. And immediately he came forth to meet them with an infinite multitude, and a strong hand, |
| 21 et quelques prières qu'on lui fît, il ne voulut point les écouter, ni accorder le passage par son pays; c'est pourquoi Israël se détourna de ses terres. | 21 Neither would he condescend to their desire to grant them passage through his borders. Wherefore Israel turned another way from him. |
| 22 Et ayant décampés de Cadès, ils vinrent à la montagne de Hor, qui est sur le confin du pays d'Edom. | 22 And when they had removed the camp from Cades, they came to mount Her, which is in the borders of the land of Edom: |
| 23 Le Seigneur parla en ce lieu à Moïse, | 23 Where the Lord spoke to Moses: |
| 24 et lui dit: Qu'Aaron aille se joindre à son peuple; car il n'entrera point dans la terre que J'ai donnée aux enfants d'Israël, parce qu'il a été incrédule aux paroles de Ma bouche, au lieu nommé les Eaux de contradiction. | 24 Let Aaron, saith he, go to his people: for he shall not go into the land which I have given the children of Israel, because he was incredulous to my words, at the waters of contradiction. |
| 25 Prenez donc Aaron, et son fils avec lui, et menez-les sur la montagne de Hor. | 25 Take Aaron and his son with him, and bring them up into mount Hor: |
| 26 Et ayant dépouillé le père de sa robe, vous en revêtirez Eléazar, son fils; et Aaron sera réuni à ses pères, et mourra en ce lieu. | 26 And when thou hast stripped the father of his vesture, thou shalt vest therewith Eleazar his son: Aaron shall be gathered to his people, and die there. |
| 27 Moïse fit ce que le Seigneur lui avait commandé; ils montèrent sur la montagne de Hor devant tout le peuple. | 27 Moses did as the Lord had commanded: and they went up into mount Hor before all the multitude. |
| 28 Et après qu'il eut dépouillé Aaron de ses vêtements, il en revêtit Eléazar, son fils. | 28 And when he had stripped Aaron of his vestments, he vested Eleazar his son with them. |
| 29 Aaron étant mort sur le haut de la montagne, Moïse descendit avec Eléazar. | 29 And Aaron being dead in the top of the mountain, he came down with Eleazar. |
| 30 Et tout le peuple voyant qu'Aaron était mort, le pleura dans toutes ses familles pendant trente jours. | 30 And all the multitude seeing that Aaron was dead, mourned for him thirty days throughout all their families. |
