| 1 La seconde année de son règne, Nabuchodonosor eut un songe, dont son esprit fut effrayé; puis ce songe lui échappa. | 1 In the second year of the reign of Nabuchodonosor, Nabuchodonosor had a dream, and his spirit was terrified, and his dream went out of his mind. |
| 2 Le roi ordonna donc de rassembler les devins, les mages, les enchanteurs et les Chaldéens, pour qu'ils lui fissent connaître ses songes. Ils vinrent et se présentërent devant le roi. | 2 Then the king commanded to call together the diviners and the wise men, and the magicians, and the Chaldeans: to declare to the king his dreams: so they came and stood before the king. |
| 3 Et le roi leur dit: J'ai eu un songe; mais mon esprit est confus, et j'ignore ce que j'ai vu. | 3 And the king said to them: I saw a dream: and being troubled in mind I know not what I saw. |
| 4 Les Chaldéens répondirent au roi en langue syriaque: O roi, vis éternellement; dis le songe à tes serviteurs, et nous en donnerons l'interprétation. | 4 And the Chaldeans answered the king in Syriac: O king, live for ever: tell to thy servants thy dream, and we will declare the interpretation thereof. |
| 5 Le roi répondit au Chaldéens: La chose m'a échappé; si vous ne me faites pas connaître le songe et ce qu'il signifie, vous périrez tous, et vos maisons seront confisquées. | 5 And the king answering said to the Chaldeans: The thing is gone out of my mind: unless you tell me the dream, and the meaning thereof, you shall be put to death, and your houses shall be confiscated. |
| 6 Maiis si vous me racontez le songe et ce qu'il signifie, vous recevrez de moi des dons, des présents et des grands honneurs. Faites-moi donc connaître le songe et son interprétation. | 6 But if you tell the dream, and the meaning of it, you shall receive of me rewards, and gifts, and great honour: therefore tell me the dream, and the interpretation thereof. |
| 7 Ils répondirent pour la seconde fois, et ils dirent: Que le roi dise le songe à ses serviteurs, et nous lui en donnerons l'interprétation. | 7 They answered again and said: Let the king tell his servants the dream, and we will declare the interpretation of it. |
| 8 Le roi répondit: Je vois bien que vous cherchez à gagner du temps, parce que vous savez que la chose m'a échappé. | 8 The king answered, and said: I know for certain that you seek to gain time, since you know that the thing is gone from me. |
| 9 Si donc vous ne me faites pas connaître le songe, vous subirez tous la même sentence, parce que vous m'auriez donné une interprétation trompeuse et pleine de fausseté, pour m'entretenir jusqu'à ce que le temps se passe. Dites-moi le songe, afin que je sache que l'interprétation que vous en donnerez sera véritable. | 9 If therefore you tell me not the dream, there is one sentence concerning you, that you have also framed a lying interpretation, and full of deceit, to speak before me till the time pass away. Tell me therefore the dream, that I may know that you also give a true interpretation thereof. |
| 10 Les Chaldéens répondirent au roi: Il n'y a pas d'homme sur la terre, ô roi, qui puisse accomplir ton ordre; et il n'y a pas de roi, quelque grand et puissant qu'il fût, qui ait jamais demandé une pareille chose à un devin, à un magicien et à un Chaldéen. | 10 Then the Chaldeains answered before the king, and said: There is no man upon earth, that can accomplish thy word, O king, neither doth any king, though great and mighty, ask such a thing of any diviner, or wise man, or Chaldean. |
| 11 Car ce que tu demandes, ô roi, est difficile; et on ne trouvera personne qui puisse l'indiquer en ta présence, excepté les dieux, qui n'ont pas de commerce avec les hommes. | 11 For the thing that thou askest, O king, is difficult; nor can any one be found that can shew it before the king, except the gods, whose conversation is not with men. |
| 12 A cette réponse, le roi entra en fureur, et, dans son extrême colère, il ordonna qu'on fît périr tous les sages de Babylone. | 12 Upon hearing this, the king in fury, and in great wrath, commanded that all the wise men of Babylon should be put to death. |
| 13 Cet arrêt ayant été prononcé, les sages étaient mis à mort, et on cherchait Daniel et ses compagnons pour les faire périr. | 13 And the decree being gone forth, the wise men were slain: and Daniel and his companions were sought for, to be put to death. |
| 14 Alors Daniel s'informa de la loi et de la sentence auprès d'Arioch, chef de la milice du roi, qui était sorti pour mettre à mort les sages de Babylone; | 14 Then Daniel inquired concerning the law and the sentence, of Arioch the general of the king's army, who was gone forth to kill the wise men of Babylon. |
| 15 et comme il avait reçu cet ordre du roi, Daniel lui demanda pour quel motif le roi avait prononcé une sentence si cruelle. Arioch ayant exposé l'affaire à Daniel, | 15 And he asked him that had received the orders of the king, why so cruel a sentence was gone forth from the face of the king. And when Arioch had told the matter to Daniel, |
| 16 Daniel se présenta devant le roi, et le pria de lui accorder du temps pour donner au roi la solution. | 16 Daniel went in and desired of the king, that he would give him time to resolve the question and declare it to the king. |
| 17 Et étant entré dans sa maison, il déclara ce qui se passait à Ananias, Misaël et Azarias, ses compagnons, | 17 And he went into his house, and told the matter to Ananias, and Misael, and Azarias his companions: |
| 18 afin qu'ils implorassent la miséricorde du Dieu du Ciel sur ce mystère, et que Daniel et ses compagnons ne périssent pas avec les autres sages de Babylone. | 18 To the end that they should ask mercy at the face of the God of heaven concerning this secret, and that Daniel and his companions might not perish with the rest of the wise men of Babylon. |
| 19 Alors le mystère fut révélé à Daniel dans une vision pendant la nuit; et Daniel bénit le Dieu du Ciel | 19 Then was the mystery revealed to Daniel by a vision in the night: and Daniel blessed the God of heaven, |
| 20 et dit: Que le nom du Seigneur soit béni de sìècle en siècle, parce que la sagesse et la force sont à Lui! | 20 And speaking he said: Blessed be the name of the Lord from eternity and for evermore: for wisdom and fortitude are his. |
| 21 C'est Lui qui change les temps et les âges, qui transfère et qui établit les royaumes, qui donne la sagesse aux sages, et la science à ceux qui ont l'intelligence. | 21 And he changeth times and ages: taketh away kingdoms and establisheth them, giveth wisdom to the wise, and knowledge to them that have understanding. |
| 22 C'est Lui qui révèle les choses profondes et cachées, et qui connaît ce qui est dans les ténèbres; et la lumière est avec Lui. | 22 He revealeth deep and hidden things, and knoweth what is in darkness: and light is with him. |
| 23 Dieu de nos pères, je Vous rends grâces et je Vous loue, parce que Vous m'avez donné la sagesse et la force; et maintenant Vous m'avez montré ce que nous Vous avons demandé, car Vous nous avez découvert le secret du roi. | 23 To thee, O God of our fathers, I give thanks, and I praise thee: because thou hast given me wisdom and strength: and now thou hast shewn me what we desired of thee, for thou hast made known to us, the king's discourse. |
| 24 Après cela Daniel alla trouver Arioch, à qui le roi avait ordonné de faire mourir les sages de Babylone, et il lui parla ainsi: Ne fait pas mourir les sages de Babylone; conduis-moi en présence du roi, et je lui donnerai la solution. | 24 After this Daniel went in to Arioch, to whom the king had given orders to destroy the wise men of Babylon, and he spoke thus to him: Destroy not the wise men of Babylon: bring me in before the king, and I will tell the solution to the king. |
| 25 Alors Arioch conduisit promptement Daniel auprès du roi, et lui dit: J'ai trouvé un homme d'entre les captifs des enfants de Juda, qui donnera au roi la solution. | 25 Then Arioch in haste brought in Daniel to the king, and said to him: I have found a man of the children of the captivity of Juda, that will resolve the question to the king. |
| 26 Le roi répondit et dit à Daniel, surnommé Baltassar: Penses-tu pouvoir véritablement me dire le songe que j'ai eu, et son interprétation? | 26 The king answered, and said to Daniel, whose name was Baltassar: Thinkest thou indeed that thou canst tell me the dream that I saw, and the interpretation thereof? |
| 27 Daniel répondit en présence du roi et dit: Le mystère dont le roi s'enquiert, les sages, les mages, les devins et les augures ne peuvent le découvrir au roi. | 27 And Daniel made answer before the king, and said: The secret that the king desireth to know, none of the wise men, or the philosophers, or the diviners, or the soothsayers can declare to the king. |
| 28 Mais il y a dans le Ciel un Dieu qui révèle les mystères, et qui t'a montré, ô roi, ce qui doit arriver dans les derniers temps. Voici ton songe et les visions qui t'ont traversé l'esprit sur ta couche: | 28 But there is a God in heaven that revealeth mysteries, who hath shewn to thee, O king Nabuchodonosor, what is to come to pass in the latter times. Thy dream, and the visions of thy head upon thy bed, are these: |
| 29 Tu commenças, ô roi, à penser à ce qui devait arriver après ce temps-ci; et Celui qui révèle les mystères t'a montré les choses à venir. | 29 Thou, O king, didst begin to think in thy bed, what should come to pass hereafter: and he that revealeth mysteries shewed thee what shall come to pass. |
| 30 A moi aussi ce secret a été révélé, non par une sagesse qui serait en moi plus que chez tous les vivants, mais afin que le roi sût l'interprétation du songe, et que tu connusses les pensées de ton esprit. | 30 To me also this secret is revealed, not by any wisdom that I have more than all men alive: but that the interpretation might be made manifest to the king, and thou mightest know the thoughts of thy mind. |
| 31 O roi, tu regardais, et voici qu'une statue immense t'apparut; cette statue, grande et extraordinairement élevée, était debout devant toi, et son aspect était terrible. | 31 Thou, O king, sawest, and behold there was as it were a great statue: this statue, which was great and high, tall of stature, stood before thee, and the look thereof was terrible. |
| 32 La tête de cette statue était d'un or très pur; la poitrine et les bras étaient d'argent; le ventre et les cuisses, d'airain; | 32 The head of this statue was of fine gold, but the breast and the arms of silver, and the belly and the thighs of brass: |
| 33 les jambes, de fer; une partie des pieds était de fer, et l'autre d'argile. | 33 And the legs of iron, the feet part of iron and part of clay. |
| 34 Tu la regardais, lorsqu'une pierre se détacha de la montagne sans la main d'aucun homme, et elle frappa la statue sur ses pieds de fer et d'argile, et elle les mit en pièces. | 34 Thus thou sawest, till a stone was cut out of a mountain without hands: and it struck the statue upon the feet thereof that were of iron and of clay, and broke them in pieces. |
| 35 Alors le fer, l'argile, l'airain, l'argent et l'or se brisèrent ensemble, et devinrent comme la menue paille d'une aire en été; le vent les emporta; et on n'en trouva plus de trace; mais la pierre qui avait frappé la statue devint une grande montagne et remplit toute la terre. | 35 Then was the iron, the clay, the brass, the silver, and the gold broken to pieces together, and became like the chaff of a summer's thrashingfloor, and they were carried away by the wind: and there was no place found for them: but the stone that struck the statue, became a great mountain, and filled the whole earth. |
| 36 Voilà le songe; nous en donnerons aussi l'interprétation devant toi, ô roi. | 36 This is the dream: we will also tell the interpretation thereof before thee, O king. |
| 37 Tu es le roi des rois, et le Dieu du Ciel t'a donné le royaume, la force, l'empire et la gloire; | 37 Thou art a king of kings: and the God of heaven hath given thee a kingdom, and strength, and power, and glory: |
| 38 Il t'a assujetti tous les lieux où habitent les enfants des hommes et les bêtes des champs; Il a mis aussi dans ta main les oiseaux du ciel, et Il a soumis toutes choses à ta puissance: c'est donc toi qui es la tête d'or. | 38 And all places wherein the children of men, and the beasts of the field do dwell: he hath also given the birds of the air into thy hand, and hath put all things under thy power: thou therefore art the head of gold. |
| 39 Après toi il s'élèvera un autre royaume, moindre que le tien, il sera d'argent; et ensuite un troisième royaume qui sera d'airain et qui commandera à toute la terre. | 39 And after thee shall rise up another kingdom, inferior to thee, of silver: and another third kingdom of brass, which shall rule over all the world. |
| 40 Le quatrième royaume sera comme le fer; de même que le fer brise et dompte toutes choses, ainsi il brisera et il réduira tout cela en poudre. | 40 And the fourth kingdom shall be as iron. As iron breaketh into pieces, and subdueth all things, so shall that break and destroy all these. |
| 41 Mais, comme tu as vu que les pieds et les doigts des pieds étaient en partie d'argile de potier et en partie de fer, le royaume, quoique prenant son origine du fer, sera divisé, selon que tu as vu que le fer était mêlé avec la terre et l'argile. | 41 Arid whereas thou sawest the feet, and the toes, part of potter's clay, and part of iron: the kingdom shall be divided, but yet it shall take its origin from the iron, according as thou sawest the iron mixed with the miry clay. |
| 42 Et comme les doigts des pieds étaient en partie de fer et en partie de terre, le royaume sera solide en partie, et en partie fragile. | 42 And as the toes of the feet were part of iron, and part of clay, the kingdom shall be partly strong, and partly broken. |
| 43 Et comme tu as vu que le fer était mêlé avec la terre et l'argile, ils se mêleront aussi par des alliances humaines; mais ils ne demeureront pas unis, de même que le fer ne peut se mêler avec l'argile. | 43 And whereas thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay, they shall be mingled indeed together with the seed of man, but they shall not stick fast one to another, as iron cannot be mixed with clay. |
| 44 Au temps de ces royaumes, le Dieu du Ciel suscitera un royaume qui ne sera jamais détruit, et ce royaume ne sera pas livré à un autre peuple; il brisera et anéantira tous ces autres royaumes, et lui-même subsistera éternellement. | 44 But in the days of those kingdoms the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed, and his kingdom shall not be delivered up to another people, and it shall break in pieces, and shall consume all these kingdoms, and itself shall stand for ever. |
| 45 Comme tu as vu que la pierre qui avait été détachée de la montagne, sans la main d'aucun homme, a brisé l'argile, le fer, l'airain, l'argent et l'or, le grand Dieu a fait voir au roi ce qui doit arriver plus tard. Le songe est véritable et l'interprétation en est certaine. | 45 According as thou sawest that the stone was cut out of the mountain without hands, and broke in pieces, the clay, and the iron, and the brass, and the silver, and the gold, the great God hath shewn the king what shall come to pass hereafter, and the dream is true, and the interpretation thereof is faithful. |
| 46 Alors le roi Nabuchodonosor se prosterna la face contre terre et adora Daniel, et il ordonna qu'on lui offrit des victimes et de l'encens. | 46 Then king Nabuchodonosor fell on his face, and worshipped Daniel, and commanded that they should offer in sacrifice to him victims and incense. |
| 47 Parlant ensuite à Daniel, le roi dit: Votre Dieu est véritablement le Dieu des dieux, et le Seigneur des rois, et Celui qui révèle les mystères, puisque tu as pu dévoiler ce secret. | 47 And the king spoke to Daniel, and said: Verily your God is the God of gods, and Lord of kings, and a revealer of hidden things: seeing thou couldst discover this secret. |
| 48 Alors le roi éleva Daniel aux plus hauts honneurs et lui fit de nombreux et magnifiques présents, il lui donna le gouvernement de toutes les provinces de Babylone, et l'établit chef suprême de tous les sages de Babylone. | 48 Then the king advanced Daniel to a high station, and gave him many and great gifts: and he made him governor over all the provinces of Babylon, and chief of the magistrates over all the wise men of Babylon. |
| 49 Daniel demanda au roi, qui l'accorda, de donner à Sidrach, à Misach et à Abdénago l'intendance des affaires de la province de Babylone; quant à Daniel, il était à la cour du roi. | 49 And Daniel requested of the king, and he appointed Sidrach, Misach, and Abdenago over the works of the province of Babylon: but Daniel himself was in the king's palace. |
