1 La quatrième année de Joakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, la parole du Seigneur fut adressée à Jérémie, en ces termes:	1 In the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh,
2 Prends un livre, et tu y écriras toutes les paroles que Je t'ai dites contre Israël et Juda, et contre tous les peuples, depuis le jour où Je t'ai parlé, au temps de Josias, jusqu'à ce jour;	2 'Take a scroll and on it write al the words I have spoken to you about Israel, Judah and al the nations,from the day I first spoke to you, in the time of Josiah, until today.
3 peut-être, quand la maison de Juda entendra tous les maux que Je pense lui faire, reviendront-ils chacun de ses voies criminelles, et Je pardonnerai leur iniquité et leurs péchés.	3 Perhaps when the House of Judah hears about al the disaster I intend to inflict on them, they will turn,each one of them, from their evil behaviour, so that I can forgive their sinful guilt.'
4 Jérémie appela donc Baruch, fils de Nérias, et Baruch écrivit dans un livre, sous la dictée de Jérémie, toutes les paroles que le Seigneur lui avait dites.	4 Jeremiah then summoned Baruch son of Neriah, who at his dictation wrote down on the scrol all thewords Yahweh had spoken to him.
5 Jérémie donna ensuite cet ordre à Baruch: Je suis enfermé, et je ne puis pas entrer dans la maison du Seigneur.	5 Jeremiah then gave Baruch this order, 'As I am prevented from entering the Temple of Yahweh,
6 Entres-y donc, toi, et lis, dans le livre où tu as écrit sous ma dictée, les paroles du Seigneur aux oreilles du peuple, dans la maison du Seigneur, au jour du jeûne; tu les liras aussi aux oreilles de tous les habitants de Juda, qui viennent de leurs villes;	6 you yourself must go and, from the scrol you wrote at my dictation, read all Yahweh's words to thepeople in his Temple on the day of the fast, and in this way you can read them in the hearing also of all theJudaeans who come in from their towns.
7 peut-être leur prière tombera-t-elle devant le Seigneur, et reviendront-ils chacun de sa voie mauvaise, car grande est la fureur, l'indignation dont le Seigneur a menacé ce peuple.	7 Perhaps their prayers wil move Yahweh and they wil turn one and al from their evil behaviour, forgreat is the furious anger with which Yahweh has threatened this people.'
8 Baruch, fils de Nérias, fit tout ce que le prophète Jérémie lui avait ordonné, et il lut dans le livre les paroles du Seigneur, dans la maison du Seigneur.	8 Baruch son of Neriah duly carried out the order that the prophet Jeremiah had given him, to read alYahweh's words from the book in his Temple.
9 La cinquième année de Joakim, fils de Josias, roi de Juda, au neuvième mois, on publia un jeûne devant le Seigneur à tout le peuple qui était à Jérusalem, et à toute la multitude qui avait afflué des villes de Juda à Jérusalem.	9 Now, in the fifth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the ninth month, al the people ofJerusalem and all the people who could get to Jerusalem from the towns of Judah were summoned to a fastbefore Yahweh.
10 Et Baruch lut dans le livre les paroles de Jérémie dans la maison du Seigneur, dans la chambre de Gamarias, fils de Saphan, le secrétaire, dans le vestibule supérieur, à l'entrée de la porte neuve de la maison du Seigneur, aux oreilles de tout le peuple.	10 Baruch then read Jeremiah's words from the book; this happened in the room of Gemariah son of thescribe Shaphan, in the upper court at the entry of the New Gate of the Temple of Yahweh, where all the peoplecould hear.
11 Et lorsque Michée, fils de Gamarias, fils de Saphan, eut entendu toutes les paroles du Seigneur écrites dans le livre,	11 Micaiah son of Gemariah, son of Shaphan, having heard all Yahweh's words read from the book,
12 il descendit à la maison du roi, dans la chambre du secrétaire, où tous les princes étaient assis: Elisama le secrétaire; Dalaïas, fils de Séméïas; Elnathan, fils d'Achobor; Gamarias, fils de Saphan; Sédécias, fils d'Hananias, et tous les princes;	12 went down to the royal palace, to the scribe's room. Al the chief men were in session: the scribeElishama, Delaiah son of Shemaiah, Elnathan son of Achbor, Gemariah son of Shaphan, Zedekiah son ofHananiah and al the other chief men;
13 et Michée leur rapporta toutes les paroles qu'il avait entendues lorsque Baruch lisait dans le livre aux oreilles du peuple.	13 and to them Micaiah reported al the words he heard as Baruch was reading the book aloud to thepeople.
14 Tous les princes envoyèrent donc vers Baruch Judi, fils de Nathanias, fils de Sélémias, fils de Chusi, pour lui dire: Prends dans ta main le livre dans lequel tu as lu aux oreilles du peuple, et viens. Baruch, fils de Nérias, prit donc le livre dans sa main, et il vint auprès d'eux.	14 The chief men then by common consent sent Jehudi son of Netaniah to Baruch, with Shelemiah sonof Cushi, to say, 'Come, and bring the scrol with you which you have been reading to the people.'
15 Et ils lui dirent: Assieds-toi, et lis ces choses à nos oreilles. Et Baruch lut à leurs oreilles.	15 Bringing the scrol with him, Baruch son of Neriah appeared before them. 'Sit down,' they said, 'andread it out.' So Baruch read it to them.
16 Lors donc qu'ils eurent entendu toutes ces paroles, ils s'entre-regardèrent tous avec stupéfaction, et ils dirent à Baruch: Il faut que nous rapportions au roi toutes ces paroles.	16 Having heard al the words they turned to one another in alarm and said to Baruch, 'We must certainlyinform the king of this.'
17 Et ils l'interrogèrent, en disant: Indique-nous comment tu as écrit toutes ces paroles sous sa dictée.	17 They then questioned Baruch, 'Tel us', they said, 'how you came to write al these words.'
18 Baruch leur répondit: Il dictait de sa bouche toutes ces paroles comme s'il me les eût lues, et moi Je les écrivais dans ce livre avec de l'encre.	18 'Jeremiah dictated them al to me,' Baruch replied, 'and I wrote them down in ink in this book.'
19 Les princes dirent à Baruch: Va, et cache-toi, ainsi que Jérémie, et que personne ne sache où vous serez.	19 The chief men said to Baruch, 'You and Jeremiah had better go into hiding; and do not tel anyonewhere you are.'
20 Ils allèrent ensuite auprès du roi, dans la cour, laissant le livre en dépôt dans la chambre d'Elisama, le secrétaire, et ils rapportèrent toutes les paroles aux oreilles du roi.	20 Whereupon they went off to the king in the palace court, depositing the scrol in the room of the scribeElishama. They then informed the king of the whole affair.
21 Alors le roi envoya Judi pour prendre le livre; Judi l'ayant pris dans la chambre d'Elisama, le secrétaire, le lut aux oreilles du roi et de tous les princes qui se tenaient autour du roi.	21 The king sent Jehudi for the scrol , and he brought it from the room of the scribe Elishama and read itto the king and all the chief men standing round the king.
22 Or le roi était assis dans la maison d'hiver, au neuvième mois, et un brasier plein de charbons ardents était placé devant lui.	22 The king was sitting in his winter apartments -- it was the ninth month -- with a fire burning in a brazierin front of him.
23 Lorsque Judi eut lu trois ou quatre pages le roi coupa le livre avec le canif du secrétaire, et le jeta dans le feu du brasier, jusqu'à ce que tout le volume fût consumé dans le feu du brasier.	23 Each time Jehudi had read three or four columns, the king cut them off with a scribe's knife and threwthem into the fire in the brazier until the whole of the scrol had been burnt in the brazier fire.
24 Le roi et tous ses serviteurs, qui entendirent toutes ces paroles ne furent pas effrayés et ne déchirèrent pas leurs vêtements.	24 But in spite of hearing al these words, neither the king nor any of his courtiers took alarm or tore theirclothes;
25 Cependant Elnathan, Dalaïas et Gamarias avaient prié le roi de ne pas brûler le livre; mais il ne les écouta pas.	25 and although Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah had urged the king not to burn the scrol he wouldnot listen to them,
26 Et le roi ordonna à Jérémie, fils d'Amélech, à Saraïas, fils d'Ezriel, et à Sélémias, fils d'Abdéel, d'arrêter Baruch, le secrétaire, et le prophète Jérémie; mais le Seigneur les cacha.	26 but ordered the king's son Jerahmeel and Seraiah son of Azriel and Shelemiah son of Abdeel toarrest the scribe Baruch and the prophet Jeremiah. But Yahweh had hidden them.
27 Et la parole du Seigneur fut adressée au prophète Jérémie, après que le roi eut brûlé le livre où étaient les paroles que Baruch avait écrites sous la dictée de Jérémie, et il lui dit:	27 Then the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah, after the king had burnt the scrol containing the wordsBaruch had written at Jeremiah's dictation,
28 Prends un autre livre, et écris-y toutes les paroles qui étaient dans le premier livre, qu'a brûlé Joakim, roi de Juda.	28 'Take another scroll and write down all the words that were written on the first scrol burnt byJehoiakim king of Judah.
29 Et tu diras à Joakim, roi de Juda: Ainsi parle le Seigneur: Tu as brûlé ce livre, en disant: Pourquoi y as-tu écrit et annoncé que le roi de Babylone viendra en toute hâte pour ravager ce pays, et pour en faire disparaître les hommes et les bêtes?	29 And as regards Jehoiakim king of Judah, you are to say, "Yahweh says this: You have burnt thatscrol , saying: Why have you written down: The king of Babylon will certainly come and lay this country wasteand leave it without human or animal?
30 C'est pourquoi ainsi parle le Seigneur contre Joakim, roi de Juda: Aucun prince issu de lui ne sera assis sur le trône de David, et son cadavre sera jeté à la chaleur pendant le jour, et à la gelée pendant la nuit.	30 So, this is what Yahweh says about Jehoiakim king of Judah: He wil have no one to occupy thethrone of David, and his corpse wil be tossed out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night.
31 Je visiterai en lui, et dans sa race, et dans ses serviteurs, leurs iniquités, et Je ferai venir sur eux, sur les habitants de Jérusalem et sur les hommes de Juda, tous les maux que Je leur ai prédits, sans qu'ils M'aient écouté.	31 I shal punish him, his offspring and his courtiers for their guilt; on them, on the citizens of Jerusalemand on the people of Judah I shal bring the total disaster which I had decreed for them but to which they havepaid no attention."
32 Jérémie prit donc un autre livre et le donna à Baruch, fils de Nérias, le secrétaire, qui y écrivit sous la dictée de Jérémie toutes les paroles du livre qu'avait brûlé Joakim, roi de Juda; et en outre beaucoup d'autres paroles qui n'étaient pas dans le premier furent ajoutées.	32 Jeremiah then took another scrol and gave it to the scribe Baruch son of Neriah, who in it atJeremiah's dictation wrote all the words of the book that Jehoiakim king of Judah had burnt, with many similarwords in addition.
