| 3 S'imaginant qu'ils demeuraient cachés dans l'obscurité de leurs péchés, ils ont été dispersés sous le voile ténébreux de l'oubli, et, saisis d'un horrible effroi, ils ont été frappés d'un profond étonnement. | 3 For they who supposed their secret sins were hid under the dark veil of oblivion Were scattered in fearful trembling, terrified by apparitions. |
| 4 Car la caverne où ils s'étaient retirés ne les défendait pas de la crainte; en effet, le bruit qui descendait les effrayait, et ils voyaient paraître des spectres affreux qui les remplissaient d'épouvante. | 4 For not even their inner chambers kept them fearless, for crashing sounds on all sides terrified them, and mute phantoms with somber looks appeared. |
| 5 Et il n'y avait pas de feu assez ardent pour leur fournir de la lumière, et les flammes brillantes des étoiles ne pouvaient éclairer cette nuit horrible. | 5 No force, even of fire, was able to give light, nor did the flaming brilliance of the stars succeed in lighting up that gloomy night. |
| 6 Ils voyaient apparaître une lueur soudaine, pleine d'effroi, et épouvantés par ces fantômes qu'ils ne faisaient qu'entrevoir, ils croyaient ces apparitions encore plus terribles. | 6 But only intermittent, fearful fires flashed through upon them; And in their terror they thought beholding these was worse than the times when that sight was no longer to be seen. |
| 7 Le recours à l'art des magiciens ne fut qu'une dérision, et la sagesse dont ils faisaient gloire fut convaincue honteusement de fausseté. | 7 And mockeries of the magic art were in readiness, and a jeering reproof of their vaunted shrewdness. |
| 8 Car ceux qui promettaient de bannir les craintes et les troubles de l'âme languissante languissaient eux-mêmes ridiculement, pleins d'épouvante. | 8 For they who undertook to banish fears and terrors from the sick soul themselves sickened with a ridiculous fear. |
| 9 Car alors même que rien de terrible ne les troublait, terrifiés par le passage des bêtes et par le sifflement des serpents, ils mouraient de peur, et ils refusaient de voir l'air auquel on ne pouvait échapper en aucune manière. | 9 For even though no monstrous thing frightened them, they shook at the passing of insects and the hissing of reptiles, |
| 10 Car, comme la méchanceté est timide, elle se condamne par son propre témoignage; troublée par la conscience, elle s'attend toujours à de grands maux. | 10 And perished trembling, reluctant to face even the air that they could nowhere escape. |
| 11 En effet, la crainte n'est autre chose que le trouble de l'âme qui se croit abandonnée de tout secours. | 11 For wickedness, of its nature cowardly, testifies in its own condemnation, and because of a distressed conscience, always magnifies misfortunes. |
| 12 Et moins elle attend du dedans d'elle-même, plus elle grossit, sans les bien connaître, les sujets qu'elle a de se tourmenter. | 12 For fear is nought but the surrender of the helps that come from reason; |
| 13 Pour eux, pendant cette nuit tout à fait impuissante, sortie du plus profond abîme des enfers, dormant le même sommeil, | 13 and the more one's expectation is of itself uncertain, the more one makes of not knowing the cause that brings on torment. |
| 14 ils étaient tantôt troublés par la crainte des spectres, et tantôt abattus parce que le coeur leur manquait, car un effroi soudain et inattendu s'était emparé d'eux. | 14 So they, during that night, powerless though it was, that had come upon them from the recesses of a powerless nether world, while all sleeping the same sleep, |
| 15 Si quelqu'un d'eux était tombé, il demeurait enfermé sans chaînes dans cette sorte de prison. | 15 Were partly smitten by fearsome apparitions and partly stricken by their souls' surrender; for fear came upon them, sudden and unexpected. |
| 16 Que l'homme ainsi surpris fût un laboureur, ou un berger, ou un ouvrier occupé aux travaux des champs, il était soumis à une nécessité inévitable; | 16 Thus, then, whoever was there fell into that unbarred prison and was kept confined. |
| 17 car ils étaient tous liés par une même chaîne de ténèbres. Le vent qui sifflait, le suave concert des oiseaux parmi les branches touffues des arbres, la violence de l'eau qui courait avec impétuosité, | 17 For whether one was a farmer, or a shepherd, or a worker at tasks in the wasteland, Taken unawares, he served out the inescapable sentence; |
| 18 le grand bruit des pierres qui se précipitaient, les mouvements invisibles des animaux qui jouaient ensemble, la voix puissante des bêtes qui hurlaient, ou l'écho qui retentissait du creux des montagnes,tout les faisait mourir d'effroi. | 18 for all were bound by the one bond of darkness. And were it only the whistling wind, or the melodious song of birds in the spreading branches, Or the steady sound of rushing water, |
| 19 Car tout l'univers était éclairé par une lumière limpide, et s'occupait de ses travaux sans obstacle. | 19 or the rude crash of overthrown rocks, Or the unseen gallop of bounding animals, or the roaring cry of the fiercest beasts, Or an echo resounding from the hollow of the hills, these sounds, inspiring terror, paralyzed them. |
| 20 Sur eux seuls pesait une nuit profonde, image des ténèbres qui leur étaient réservées, et ils étaient plus insupportables à eux-mêmes que les ténèbres. | 20 For the whole world shone with brilliant light and continued its works without interruption; |
| 21 Over them alone was spread oppressive night, an image of the darkness that next should come upon them; yet they were to themselves more burdensome than the darkness. |
