| 1 Ne dis rien à la légère, et que ton coeur ne se hâte pas de proférer des paroles devant Dieu. Car Dieu est au ciel, et toi sur la terre; c'est pourquoi que tes paroles soient peu nombreuses. | 1 Keep thy foot when thou goest to the house of God, and be more ready to hear, than to give the sacrifice of fools: for they consider not that they do evil. |
| 2 La multitude des soucis produit les songes, et la folie se trouve dans l'abondance des paroles. | 2 Be not rash with thy mouth, and let not thine heart be hasty to utter any thing before God: for God is in heaven, and thou upon earth: therefore let thy words be few. |
| 3 Si tu as fait un voeu à Dieu, ne tarde pas à l'accomplir; car la promesse infidéle et insensée Lui déplaît; mais accomplis tous les voeux que tu as faits. | 3 For a dream cometh through the multitude of business; and a fool's voice is known by multitude of words. |
| 4 Il vaut beaucoup mieux ne pas faire de voeux, que d'en faire et de ne pas les accomplir. | 4 When thou vowest a vow unto God, defer not to pay it; for he hath no pleasure in fools: pay that which thou hast vowed. |
| 5 Ne permets pas â ta bouche de faire pécher ta chair, et ne dis pas devant l'Ange: Il n'y a point de providence; de peur que Dieu, irrité contre tes paroles, ne détruise toutes les oeuvres de tes mains. | 5 Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that thou shouldest vow and not pay. |
| 6 Où il y a beaucoup de songes, il y a aussi beaucoup de vanités et de discours sans fin; mais toi, crains Dieu. | 6 Suffer not thy mouth to cause thy flesh to sin; neither say thou before the angel, that it was an error: wherefore should God be angry at thy voice, and destroy the work of thine hands? |
| 7 Si tu vois l'oppression des pauvres, et la violence dans les jugements, et le renversement de la justice dans une province, que cela ne t'étonne pas; car celui qui est élevé en a un autre au-dessus de lui; et il y en a encore d'autres qui sont élevés au-dessus d'eux; | 7 For in the multitude of dreams and many words there are also divers vanities: but fear thou God. |
| 8 et de plus, le roi commande à tout le pays qui lui est assujetti. | 8 If thou seest the oppression of the poor, and violent perverting of judgment and justice in a province, marvel not at the matter: for he that is higher than the highest regardeth; and there be higher than they. |
| 9 L'avare n'est point rassasié par l'argent, et celui qui aime les richesses n'en recueillera pas de fruit; c'est donc là encore une vanité. | 9 Moreover the profit of the earth is for all: the king himself is served by the field. |
| 10 Quand le bien abonde, il y a aussi beaucoup de gens pour le manger. De quoi donc sert-il à celui qui le possède, sinon qu'il voit de ses yeux ses richesses? | 10 He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity. |
| 11 Le sommeil est doux au travailleur, soit qu'il ait peu ou beaucoup mangé; mais le rassasiement du riche ne le laisse pas dormir. | 11 When goods increase, they are increased that eat them: and what good is there to the owners thereof, saving the beholding of them with their eyes? |
| 12 Il est encore un autre mal très fâcheux que j'ai vu sous le soleil: des richesses conservées pour le malheur de celui qui les possède. | 12 The sleep of a labouring man is sweet, whether he eat little or much: but the abundance of the rich will not suffer him to sleep. |
| 13 Car il les voit périr avec une extrême affliction; il a engendré un fils qui sera réduit à la dernière indigence. | 13 There is a sore evil which I have seen under the sun, namely, riches kept for the owners thereof to their hurt. |
| 14 Comme il est sorti nu du sein de sa mère, il retournera de même, et il n'emportera rien avec lui de son travail. | 14 But those riches perish by evil travail: and he begetteth a son, and there is nothing in his hand. |
| 15 C'est là un mal tout à fait digne de compassion: il s'en retournera comme il est venu. De quoi lui sert-il donc d'avoir travaillé pour le vent? | 15 As he came forth of his mother's womb, naked shall he return to go as he came, and shall take nothing of his labour, which he may carry away in his hand. |
| 16 Tous les jours de sa vie il a mangé dans les ténèbres, et parmi des soucis nombreux, dans la misère et le chagrin. | 16 And this also is a sore evil, that in all points as he came, so shall he go: and what profit hath he that hath laboured for the wind? |
| 17 Il m'a donc semblé qu'il est bon pour l'homme de manger et de boire, et de se réjouir du fruit de son travail qu'il a fait sous le soleil, pendant le nombre des jours de sa vie que Dieu lui a donnés; et c'est là sa part. | 17 All his days also he eateth in darkness, and he hath much sorrow and wrath with his sickness. |
| 18 Et quand Dieu a donné à un homme des richesses et des biens, et le pouvoir d'en manger, et de jouir de sa part, et de trouver sa joie dans son travail, c'est là un don de Dieu. | 18 Behold that which I have seen: it is good and comely for one to eat and to drink, and to enjoy the good of all his labour that he taketh under the sun all the days of his life, which God giveth him: for it is his portion. |
| 19 Car il ne se souviendra pas beaucoup des jours de sa vie, parce que Dieu occupe son coeur de délices. | 19 Every man also to whom God hath given riches and wealth, and hath given him power to eat thereof, and to take his portion, and to rejoice in his labour; this is the gift of God. |
| 20 For he shall not much remember the days of his life; because God answereth him in the joy of his heart. |
