| 1 Il y avait dans la terre de Hus un homme qui s'appelait Job. Et cet homme était simple et droit; et il craignait Dieu, et fuyait le mal. | 1 In the land of Uz there was a blameless and upright man named Job, who feared God and avoided evil. |
| 2 Et il lui naquit sept fils et trois filles. | 2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him; |
| 3 Il possédait sept mille brebis, trois mille chameaux, cinq cents paires de boeufs, et cinq cents ânesses, et un très grand nombre de serviteurs. Et cet homme était grand parmi tous les Orientaux. | 3 and he had seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred she-asses, and a great number of work animals, so that he was greater than any of the men of the East. |
| 4 Et ses fils allaient les uns chez les autres, et donnaient un festin chacun à leur jour. Et ils envoyaient prier leurs trois soeurs de venir manger et boire avec eux. | 4 His sons used to take turns giving feasts, sending invitations to their three sisters to eat and drink with them. |
| 5 Et lorsque ce cercle des jours de festin était achevé, Job envoyait chercher ses enfants, et les purifiait; et, se levant de grand matin, il offrait des holocaustes pour chacun d'eux. Car il disait : Peut-être mes enfants ont-ils péché, et ont-ils offensé Dieu dans leur coeur. C'est ainsi que Job faisait tous les jours. | 5 And when each feast had run its course, Job would send for them and sanctify them, rising early and offering holocausts for every one of them. For Job said, "It may be that my sons have sinned and blasphemed God in their hearts." This Job did habitually. |
| 6 Or les fils de Dieu étant venus un jour se présenter devant le Seigneur, Satan se trouva aussi parmi eux. | 6 One day, when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, Satan also came among them. |
| 7 Le Seigneur lui dit : D'où viens-tu? Il Lui répondit : J'ai fait le tour de la terre, et je l'ai parcourue tout entière. | 7 And the LORD said to Satan, "Whence do you come?" Then Satan answered the LORD and said, "From roaming the earth and patrolling it." |
| 8 Et le Seigneur lui dit : As-tu considéré Mon serviteur Job, qui n'a point d'égal sur la terre, qui est un homme simple et droit, qui craint Dieu et fuit le mal? | 8 And the LORD said to Satan, "Have you noticed my servant Job, and that there is no one on earth like him, blameless and upright, fearing God and avoiding evil?" |
| 9 Satan lui répondit : Est-ce pour rien que Job craint Dieu? | 9 But Satan answered the LORD and said, "Is it for nothing that Job is God-fearing? |
| 10 N'avez-vous pas protégé de toutes parts sa personne, et sa maison, et tous ses biens? Vous avez béni les oeuvres de ses mains, et ses possessions se sont multipliées sur la terre. | 10 Have you not surrounded him and his family and all that he has with your protection? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his livestock are spread over the land. |
| 11 Mais étendez un peu Votre main, et touchez tout ce qui est à lui, et Vous verrez s'il ne Vous maudira pas en face. | 11 But now put forth your hand and touch anything that he has, and surely he will blaspheme you to your face." |
| 12 Le Seigneur répondit à Satan : Va, tout ce qu'il a est en ton pouvoir; seulement ne porte pas la main sur lui. Et Satan sortit aussitôt de devant le Seigneur. | 12 And the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand upon his person." So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD. |
| 13 Un jour donc que les fils et les filles de Job mangeaient et buvaient dans la maison de leur frère aîné, | 13 And so one day, while his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother, |
| 14 un messager vint à Job et lui dit : Les boeufs labouraient, et les ânnesses paissaient auprès d'eux, | 14 a messenger came to Job and said, "The oxen were plowing and the asses grazing beside them, |
| 15 et les Sabéens se sont précipités, ont tout enlevé, et ont passé les serviteurs au fil de l'épée; et je me suis échappé moi seul pour vous en apporter la nouvelle. | 15 and the Sabeans carried them off in a raid. They put the herdsmen to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you." |
| 16 Il parlait encore, lorsqu'un autre vint et dit : Le feu de Dieu est tombé du ciel sur les brebis et sur les serviteurs, et les a consumés, et je me suis échappé seul pour vous en apporter la nouvelle. | 16 While he was yet speaking, another came and said, "Lightning has fallen from heaven and struck the sheep and their shepherds and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you." |
| 17 Il parlait encore, lorsqu'un autre vint et dit : Les Chaldéens ont formé trois bandes, se sont jetés sur les chameaux et les ont enlevés, et ils ont passé les serviteurs au fil de l'épée, et je me suis échappé seul pour vous en apporter la nouvelle. | 17 While he was yet speaking, another came and said, "The Chaldeans formed three columns, seized the camels, carried them off, and put those tending them to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you." |
| 18 Il parlait encore, quand un autre se présenta et dit : Vos fils et vos filles mangeaient et buvaient dans la maison de leur frère aîné, | 18 While he was yet speaking, another came and said, "Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother, |
| 19 lorsqu'un vent impétueux s'est levé tout à coup du côté du désert, et a ébranlé les quatre coins de la maison, qui, s'écroulant, a écrasé vos enfants, et ils sont morts. Et je me suis échappé seul pour vous en apporter la nouvelle. | 19 when suddenly a great wind came across the desert and smote the four corners of the house. It fell upon the young people and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you." |
| 20 Alors Job se leva et déchira ses vêtements, et, s'étant rasé la tête, il se jeta par terre, et adora, | 20 Then Job began to tear his cloak and cut off his hair. He cast himself prostrate upon the ground, |
| 21 et dit : Je suis sorti nu du sein de ma mère, et j'y retournerai nu. Le Seigneur a donné, le Seigneur a ôté; il est arrivé ce qui a plu au Seigneur; que le nom du Seigneur soit béni! | 21 and said, "Naked I came forth from my mother's womb, and naked shall I go back again. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD!" |
| 22 En tout cela Job ne pécha point par ses lèvres, et il ne dit rien d'insensé contre Dieu. | 22 In all this Job did not sin, nor did he say anything disrespectful of God. |
