| 2 Et il arriva, lorsqu'il fut entré dans la maison du royaume de ses pères, que l'armée se saisit d'Antiochus et de Lysias, pour les lui conduire. | 2 And it came to pass, as he entered into the house of the kingdom of his fathers, that the army seized upon Antiochus, and Lysias, to bring them unto him. |
| 3 Lorsque la chose fut connue de lui, il dit: Ne me faites pas voir leur visage. | 3 And when he knew it, he said: Let me not see their face. |
| 4 L'armée les tua, et Démétrius s'assit sur le trône de son royaume. | 4 So the army slew them. And Demetrius sat upon the throne of his kingdom: |
| 5 Alors des hommes iniques et impies d'Israël vinrent le trouver, avec Alcime, leur chef, qui voulait être grand prêtre; | 5 And there came to him the wicked and ungodly men of Israel: And Alcimus was at the head of them, who desired to be made high priest. |
| 6 et ils accusèrent le peuple auprès du roi, en disant: Judas et ses frères ont fait périr tous tes amis, et il nous a chassés de notre pays. | 6 And they accused the people to the king, saying: Judas and his brethren have destroyed all thy friends, and he hath driven us out of our land. |
| 7 Envoie donc maintenant un homme en qui tu aies confiance, afin qu'il aille et qu'il voie toute la ruine qu'il a amenée sur nous et sur les provinces du roi, et qu'il punisse tous ses amis et leurs auxiliaires. | 7 Now therefore send some man whom thou trustest, and let him go, and see all the havock he hath made amongst us, and in the king's lands: and let him punish all his friends and their helpers. |
| 8 Et le roi choisit parmi ses amis Bacchidés, qui commandait au delà du fleuve, grand dans le royaume, et fidèle au roi. | 8 Then the king chose Bacchides, one of his friends that ruled beyond the great river in the kingdom, and was faithful to the king: and he sent him, |
| 9 Il l'envoya pour voir la ruine qu'avait opérée Judas; puis il établit grand prêtre l'impie Alcime, et lui ordonna de tirer vengeance des enfants d'Israël. | 9 To see the havock that Judas had made: and the wicked Alcimus he made high priest, and commanded him to take revenge upon the children of Israel. |
| 10 Ils se levèrent, et vinrent avec une grande armée dans le pays de Juda, et ils envoyèrent des messagers vers Judas et vers ses frères, avec des paroles de paix, pour les tromper. | 10 And they arose, and came with a great army into the land of Juda: and they sent messengers, and spoke to Judas and his brethren with peaceable words deceitfully. |
| 11 Mais ils ne firent pas attention à leurs discours, voyant qu'ils étaient venus avec une grande armée. | 11 But they gave no heed to their words: for they saw that they were come with a great army. |
| 12 Cependant un groupe de scribes se réunit auprès d'Alcime et de Bacchidès, pour chercher ce qui était juste. | 12 Then there assembled to Alcimus and Bacchides a company of the scribes to require things that are just: |
| 13 Au premier rang se trouvaient les Assidéens, qui faisaient partie des enfants d'Israël; et ils leur demandaient la paix. | 13 And first the Assideans that were among the children of Israel, and they sought peace of them. |
| 14 Car ils disaient: C'est un prêtre de la race d'Aaron qui est venu; il ne nous trompera pas. | 14 For they said: One that is a priest of the seed of Aaron is come, he will not deceive us. |
| 15 Il leur proféra des paroles de paix, et leur dit avec serment: Nous ne vous ferons pas de mal, non plus qu'à vos amis. | 15 And he spoke to them peaceably: and he swore to them, saying: We will do you no harm nor your friends. |
| 16 Ils le crurent; mais il fit saisir soixante d'entre eux, et il les fit mourir en un même jour, selon la parole qui est écrite: | 16 And they believed him. And he took threescore of them, and slew them in one day, according to the word that is written: |
| 17 Les chairs de Vos saints et leur sang, ils les ont répandus autour de Jérusalem, et il n'y avait personne pour les ensevelir. | 17 The flesh of thy saints, and the blood of them they have shed round about Jerusalem, and there was none to bury them. |
| 18 La crainte et la frayeur s'emparèrent de tout le peuple, et ils disaient: Il n'y a ni vérité ni justice parmi eux; car ils ont violé la parole donnée et le serment qu'ils avaient fait. | 18 Then fear and trembling fell upon all the people: for they said: There is no truth, nor justice among them: for they have broken the covenant, and the oath which they made. |
| 19 Bacchidés partit alors de Jérusalem, et alla camper près de Bethzécha; et il envoya saisir un grand nombre de ceux qui avaient quitté son parti, et égorgea quelques-uns du peuple, puis il les jeta dans un grand puits. | 19 And Bacchides removed the camp from Jerusalem, and pitched in Bethzecha: and he sent, and took many of them that were fled away from him, and some of the people he killed, and threw them into a great pit. |
| 20 Il confia le pays à Alcime, et il lui laissa des troupes pour le soutenir; puis Bacchidès revint auprès du roi. | 20 Then he committed the country to Alcimus, and left with him troops to help him. So Bacchides went away to the king: |
| 21 Cependant Alcime agissait beaucoup en faveur de son pontificat suprême; | 21 But Alcimus did what he could to maintain his chief priesthood. |
| 22 et tous ceux qui troublaient leur peuple s'assemblèrent auprès de lui, se rendirent maîtres du pays de Juda, et causèrent de grands maux dans Israël. | 22 And they that disturbed the people resorted to him, and they got the land of Juda into their power, and did much hurt in Israel. |
| 23 Judas vit tous les maux qu'Alcime et ceux qui étaient avec lui avaient fait aux enfants d'Israël, beaucoup plus que les nations; | 23 And Judas saw all the evils that Alcimus, and they that were with him, did to the children of Israel, much more than the Gentiles. |
| 24 et ils parcourut tout le territoire de la Judée, et tira vengeance des déserteurs; et ils cessèrent dès lors de faire des incursions dans le pays. | 24 And he went out into all the coasts of Juda round about, and took vengeance upon the men that had revolted, and they ceased to go forth any more into the country. |
| 25 Mais Alcime vit que Judas et ceux qui étaient avec lui étaient les plus forts, et reconnut qu'il ne pouvait leur résister, et il retourna auprès du roi et les accusa de crimes nombreux. | 25 And Alcimus saw that Judas, and they that were with him prevailed: and he knew that he could not stand against them, and he went back to the king, and accused them of many crimes. |
| 26 Alors le roi envoya Nicanor, l'un de ses princes les plus nobles, qui était très hostile à Israël, et lui commanda de perdre ce peuple. | 26 And the king sent Nicanor one of his principal lords, who was a great enemy to Israel: and he commanded him to destroy the people. |
| 27 Nicanor vint donc à Jérusalem avec une grande armée, et il députa vers Judas et ses frères, avec des paroles de paix pour les tromper, | 27 And Nicanor came to Jerusalem with a great army, and he sent to Judas and to his brethren deceitfully with friendly words, |
| 28 disant: Qu'il n'y ait pas de combat entre vous et moi. Je viendrai avec un petit nombre d'hommes, pour voir vos visages en paix. | 28 Saying: Let there be no fighting between me and you: I will come with a few men to see your faces with peace. |
| 29 Il vint auprès de Judas, et ils se saluèrent l'un l'autre pacifiquement; mais les ennemis étaient prêts à se saisir de Judas. | 29 And he came to Judas, and they saluted one another peaceably: and the enemies were prepared to take away Judas by force. |
| 30 Judas apprit qu'il était venu à lui pour le surprendre; et ayant eu peur de lui, il ne voulut pas le voir davantage. | 30 And the thing was known to Judas that he was come to him with deceit: and he was much afraid of him, and would not see his face any more. |
| 31 Nicanor sut que son dessein avait été découvert, et il marcha au combat contre Judas, près de Capharsalama. | 31 And Nicanor knew that his counsel was discovered: and he went out to fight against Judas near Capharsalama. |
| 32 Et près de cinq mille hommes de l'armée de Nicanor tombèrent, et le reste s'enfuit dans la cité de David. | 32 And there fell of Nicanor's army almost five thousand men, and they fled into the city of David. |
| 33 Après cela Nicanor monta sur la montagne de Sion, et quelques-uns des prêtres sortirent pour le saluer avec un esprit de paix, et pour lui montrer les holocaustes qui étaient offerts pour le roi. | 33 And after this Nicanor went up into mount Sion: and some of the priests and the people came out to salute him peaceably, and to shew him the holocausts that were offered for the king. |
| 34 Mais il les méprisa, en les raillant; il profana le temple, et parla avec orgueil; | 34 But he mocked them and despised them, and abused them: and he spoke proudly, |
| 35 et il jura avec colère, en disant: Si Judas n'est pas livré entre mes mains avec son armée, aussitôt que je serai revenu victorieux, je brûlerai cette maison. Et il s'en alla plein de colère. | 35 And swore in anger, saying: Unless Judas and his army be delivered into my hands, as soon as ever I return in peace, I will burn this house. And he went out in a great rage. |
| 36 Alors les prêtres entrèrent, et se tinrent en face de l'autel et du temple, et ils dirent en pleurant: | 36 And the priests went in, and stood before the face of the altar and the temple: and weeping, they said: |
| 37 Seigneur, Vous avez choisi cette maison afin que Votre nom y fût invoqué, et qu'elle fût une maison de prière et de supplication pour Votre peuple. | 37 Thou, O Lord, hast chosen this house for thy name to be called upon therein, that it might be a house of prayer and supplication for thy people. |
| 38 Tirez vengeance de cet homme et de son armée, et qu'ils tombent sous le glaive. Souvenez-Vous de leurs blasphèmes, et ne leur permettez pas de subsister. | 38 Be avenged of this man, and his army, and let them fall by the sword: remember their blasphemies, and suffer them not to continue any longer. |
| 39 Nicanor sortit de Jérusalem et vint camper près de Béthoron, et l'armée de Syrie vint à sa rencontre. | 39 Then Nicanor went out from Jerusalem, and encamped near to Bethoron: and an army of Syria joined him. |
| 40 Judas campa à Adarsa avec trois mille hommes; et Judas pria, en disant: | 40 But Judas pitched in Adarsa with three thousand men: and Judas prayed, and said: |
| 41 Ceux qui avaient été envoyés par le roi Sennachérib Vous blasphémèrent, Seigneur, et un Ange vint et leur tua cent quatre-vingt-cinq mille hommes. | 41 O Lord, when they that were sent by king Sennacherib blasphemed thee, an angel went out, and slew of them a hundred and eighty-five thousand: |
| 42 Ecrasez de même aujourd'hui cette armée en notre présence, afin que les autres sachent que Nicanor a mal parlé de Votre sanctuaire; et jugez-le selon sa malice. | 42 Even so destroy this army in our sight to day, and let the rest know that he hath spoken ill against thy sanctuary: and judge thou him according to his wickedness. |
| 43 Les armées engagèrent le combat le treizième jour du mois d'adar; et les troupes de Nicanor furent défaites, et il tomba lui-même le premier dans le combat. | 43 And the armies joined battle on the thirteenth day of the month Adar: and the army of Nicanor was defeated, and he himself was first slain in the battle. |
| 44 Lorsque son armée vit que Nicanor était tombé, ils jetèrent leurs armes et s'enfuirent; | 44 And when his army saw that Nicanor was slain, they threw away their weapons, and fled: |
| 45 et les Juifs les poursuivirent durant une journée de chemin, depuis Adazer jusqu'à l'entrée de Gazara; et ils sonnèrent des trompettes derrière eux pour donner des signaux. | 45 And they pursued after them one day's journey from Adazer, even till ye come to Gazara, and they sounded the trumpets after them with signals. |
| 46 Et des hommes sortirent de tous les villages de Judée qui étaient aux environs, et les chargèrent avec vigueur; et ils se tournèrent de nouveau contre eux, et tous tombèrent sous le glaive, et il n'en échappa pas un seul d'entre eux. | 46 And they went forth out of all the towns of Judea round about, and they pushed them with the horns, and they turned again to them, and they were all slain with the sword, and there was not left of them so much as one. |
| 47 Ils prirent leurs dépouilles comme butin, et ils coupèrent la tête de Nicanor, et sa main droite, qu'il avait étendue insolemment; ils les apportèrent, et les suspendirent en face de Jérusalem. | 47 And they took the spoils of them for a booty, and they cut off Nicanor's head, and his right hand, which he had proudly stretched out, and they brought it, and hung it up over against Jerusalem. |
| 48 Le peuple se réjouit beaucoup, et ils passèrent ce jour dans une grande joie. | 48 And the people rejoiced exceedingly, and they spent that day with great joy. |
| 49 On ordonna que ce jour serait célébré tous les ans, le treizième jour du mois d'adar. | 49 And he ordained that this day should be kept every year, being the thirteenth of the month of Adar. |
| 50 Et le pays de Juda demeura en repos pendant un petit nombre de jours. | 50 And the land of Juda was quiet for a short time. |
