| 1 Ainsi, le treizième jour du douzième mois, que nous avons déjà dit auparavant se nommer adar, lorsqu'on se préparait à tuer tous les Juifs, et que leurs ennemis aspiraient à verser leur sang, les Juifs, au contraire, commencèrent à être les plus forts, et à se venger de leurs adversaires. | 1 Now in the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar, on the thirteenth day of the same, when the king's command and edict were about to be executed, on the very day when the enemies of the Jews hoped to get the mastery over them, but which had been changed to a day when the Jews should get the mastery over their foes, |
| 2 Ils s'assemblèrent dans toutes les villes, les bourgs et les autres lieux, pour étendre la main sur leurs ennemis et leurs persécuteurs; et nul n'osa résister, parce que la crainte de leur puissance avait pénétré dans tous les peuples. | 2 the Jews gathered in their cities throughout all the provinces of King Ahasuerus to lay hands on such as sought their hurt. And no one could make a stand against them, for the fear of them had fallen upon all peoples. |
| 3 l. en observant ces jours des Sorts, et en les célébrant en leur temps avec joie. Les Juifs s'engagèrent donc, selon que Mardochée et Esther l'avaient ordonné, à observer, eux et leur postérité, les jeûnes, les cris et les jours des Sorts, | 3 All the princes of the provinces and the satraps and the governors and the royal officials also helped the Jews, for the fear of Mordecai had fallen upon them. |
| 4 qu'ils savaient être prince du palais et avoir beaucoup de pouvoir. La renommée de son nom croissait aussi de jour en jour, et volait par toutes les bouches. | 4 For Mordecai was great in the king's house, and his fame spread throughout all the provinces; for the man Mordecai grew more and more powerful. |
| 5 Les Juifs firent donc un grand carnage de leurs ennemis, et ils les tuèrent, leur rendant le mal à qu'ils s'étaient préparés à leur faire; | 5 So the Jews smote all their enemies with the sword, slaughtering, and destroying them, and did as they pleased to those who hated them. |
| 6 à ce point, qu'ils tuèrent dans Suse même jusqu'à cinq cents hommes, outre les dix fils d'Aman l'Agagite, ennemi des Juifs, dont voici les noms: | 6 In Susa the capital itself the Jews slew and destroyed five hundred men, |

| 10 Lorsqu'ils les eurent tués, ils ne voulurent pas toucher à leurs dépouilles et à leurs biens. | 10 the ten sons of Haman the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of the Jews; but they laid no hand on the plunder. |
| 11 On rapporta aussitôt au roi le nombre de ceux qui avaient été tués dans Suse. | 11 That very day the number of those slain in Susa the capital was reported to the king. |
| 12 Et il dit à la reine : Les Juifs ont tué cinq cents hommes dans la ville de Suse, outre les dix fils d'Aman. Combien grand, croyez-vous, sera le carnage qu'ils font dans toutes les provinces? Que demandez-vous encore, et que voulez-vous que j'ordonne? | 12 And the king said to Queen Esther, "In Susa the capital the Jews have slain five hundred men and also the ten sons of Haman. What then have they done in the rest of the king's provinces! Now what is your petition? It shall be granted you. And what further is your request? It shall be fulfilled." |
| 13 Elle lui répondit : S'il plaît au roi, que les Juifs reçoivent le pouvoir de faire encore demain dans Suse ce qu'ils ont fait aujourd'hui, et que les dix fils d'Aman soient pendus à des gibets. | 13 And Esther said, "If it please the king, let the Jews who are in Susa be allowed tomorrow also to do according to this day's edict. And let the ten sons of Haman be hanged on the gallows." |
| 14 Et le roi ordonna que cela fût fait, et aussitôt l'édit fut affiché dans Suse, et les dix fils d'Aman furent pendus. | 14 So the king commanded this to be done; a decree was issued in Susa, and the ten sons of Haman were hanged. |
| 15 Les Juifs, s'étant assemblés le quatorzième jour du mois d'adar, ils tuèrent trois cents hommes dans Suse, sans vouloir piller leur bien. | 15 The Jews who were in Susa gathered also on the fourteenth day of the month of Adar and they slew three hundred men in Susa; but they laid no hands on the plunder. |
| 16 Les Juifs se tinrent aussi prêts pour la défense de leur vie dans toutes les provinces qui étaient soumises à l'empire du roi, et ils tuèrent leurs ennemis et leurs persécuteurs, de sorte qu'il y eut soixante quinze mille morts, et personne ne toucha à leurs biens. | 16 Now the other Jews who were in the king's provinces also gathered to defend their lives, and got relief from their enemies, and slew seventy-five thousand of those who hated them; but they laid no hands on the plunder. |
| 17 Or le treizième jour du mois d'adar fut pour tous le premier du massacre, et ils cessèrent le quatorzième jour; ils ordonnèrent que celui-ci serait un jour de fête où on se livrerait désormais en tout temps aux banquets, à la joie et aux festins. | 17 This was on the thirteenth day of the month of Adar, and on the fourteenth day they rested and made that a day of feasting and gladness. |
| 18 Mais ceux qui étaient dans la ville de Suse avaient fait le carnage pendant le treizième et le quatorzième jour de ce même mois, et n'avaient cessé qu'au quinzième. C'est pourquoi ils le choisirent pour en faire une fête solennelle de festins et de réjouissances. | 18 But the Jews who were in Susa gathered on the thirteenth day and on the fourteenth, and rested on the fifteenth day, making that a day of feasting and gladness. |
| 19 Les Juifs qui demeuraient dans les bourgs sans murailles et dans les villages choisirent le quatorzième jour du mois d'adar, comme jour de festins et de joie, où ils se livrent à l'allégresse, et s'envoient mutuellement des portions de leurs repas et de leurs mets. | 19 Therefore the Jews of the villages, who live in the open towns, hold the fourteenth day of the month of Adar as a day for gladness and feasting and holiday-making, and a day on which they send choice portions to one another. |
| 20 Mardochée écrivit donc toutes ces choses, et il les envoya sous forme de lettres aux Juifs qui demeuraient dans toutes les provinces du roi, dans les plus proches et dans les plus éloignées, | 20 And Mordecai recorded these things, and sent letters to all the Jews who were in all the provinces of King Ahasuerus, both near and far, |
| 21 afin qu'ils acceptassent comme jours de fête le quatorzième et le quinzième jour du mois d'adar et qu'ils les célébrassent tous les ans à perpétuité par des honneurs solennels. | 21 enjoining them that they should keep the fourteenth day of the month Adar and also the fifteenth day of the same, year by year, |
| 22 Parce que, en ces jours-là, les Juifs s'étaient vengés de leurs ennemis, et que leur deuil et leur tristesse avaient été changés en allégresse et en joie, ces jours devaient être à la joie et aux festins, et on devait s'envoyer mutuellement des portions de mets et donner aux pauvres de petits présents. | 22 as the days on which the Jews got relief from their enemies, and as the month that had been turned for them from sorrow into gladness and from mourning into a holiday; that they should make them days of feasting and gladness, days for sending choice portions to one another and gifts to the poor. |
| 23 Les Juifs établirent donc comme un rite solennel tout ce qu'ils avaient commencé de faire en ce temps-là, et ce que Mardochée leur avait ordonné de faire par ses lettres. | 23 So the Jews undertook to do as they had begun, and as Mordecai had written to them. |
| 24 Car Aman, fils d'Amadathi, de la race d'Agag, ennemi déclaré des Juifs, avait médité du mal contre eux, pour les tuer et les exterminer; et il avait jeté le phur, ce qui, dans notre langue, se traduit par le sort. | 24 For Haman the Agagite, the son of Hammedatha, the enemy of all the Jews, had plotted against the Jews to destroy them, and had cast Pur, that is the lot, to crush and destroy them; |
| 25 Mais Esther entra ensuite auprès du roi, le suppliant de rendre inutiles les efforts d'Aman par une nouvelle lettre, et de faire retomber sur sa tête le mal qu'il avait résolu de faire aux Juifs. En effet, on l'attacha à une croix, lui et ses fils. | 25 but when Esther came before the king, he gave orders in writing that his wicked plot which he had devised against the Jews should come upon his own head, and that he and his sons should be hanged on the gallows. |
| 26 Et, depuis ce temps-là, ces jours ont été appelés Phurim, c'est-à-dire les Sorts, parce que le phur, c'est-à-dire le sort, avait été jeté dans l'urne. Et tout ce qui se passa alors est contenu dans cette lettre, c'est-à-dire dans ce livre. | 26 Therefore they called these days Purim, after the term Pur. And therefore, because of all that was written in this letter, and of what they had faced in this matter, and of what had befallen them, |
| 27 Les Juifs donc, en mémoire de ce qu'ils avaient souffert, et des changements survenus ensuite, s'obligèrent, eux et leurs enfants, et tous ceux qui voudraient se joindre à leur religion, à ne permettre à personne de passer ces deux jours sans solennité, selon ce qui est adressé dans cet écrit, et ce qui s'observe exactement chaque année aux temps destinés à cette fête. | 27 the Jews ordained and took it upon themselves and their descendants and all who joined them, that without fail they would keep these two days according to what was written and at the time appointed every year, |
| 28 Ce sont ces jours que n'effacera jamais l'oubli, et que toutes les provinces, d'âge en âge, célébreront par toute la terre. Et il n'y a point de ville en laquelle les jours de Phurim, c'est-à-dire des Sorts, ne soient observés par les Juifs, et par leurs enfants qui sont obligés de pratiquer ces cérémonies. | 28 that these days should be remembered and kept throughout every generation, in every family, province, and city, and that these days of Purim should never fall into disuse among the Jews, nor should the commemoration of these days cease among their descendants. |
| 29 La reine Esther, fille d'Abihaïl, et le Juif Mardochée écrivirent encore une seconde lettre, afin qu'on eût tout le soin possible d'établir ce jour comme une fête solennelle à l'avenir. | 29 Then Queen Esther, the daughter of Abihail, and Mordecai the Jew gave full written authority, confirming this second letter about Purim. |
| 30 Et ils l'envoyèrent à tous les Juifs qui demeuraient dans les cent vingt sept provinces du roi Assuérus, afin qu'ils eussent la paix et qu'ils reçussent la vérité, | 30 Letters were sent to all the Jews, to the hundred and twenty-seven provinces of the kingdom of Ahasuerus, in words of peace and truth, |
| 31 that these days of Purim should be observed at their appointed seasons, as Mordecai the Jew and Queen Esther enjoined upon the Jews, and as they had laid down for themselves and for their descendants, with regard to their fasts and their lamenting. |
| 32 et tout ce qui est contenu dans ce livre, qui porte le nom d'Esther. | 32 The command of Queen Esther fixed these practices of Purim, and it was recorded in writing. |
