| 1 Le roi passa cette nuit-là sans dormir, et il ordonna qu'on lui apportât les histoires et les annales des temps précédents. Et comme on les lisait devant lui, | 1 On that night the king could not sleep; and he gave orders to bring the book of memorable deeds, the chronicles, and they were read before the king. |
| 2 on en vint à ce passage où il était écrit de quelle manière Mardochée avait révélé la conspiration des eunuques Bagathan et Tharès, qui avaient voulu assassiner le roi Assuérus. | 2 And it was found written how Mordecai had told about Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's eunuchs, who guarded the threshold, and who had sought to lay hands upon King Ahasuerus. |
| 3 Lorsque le roi eut entendu ces choses, il dit : Quel honneur et quelle récompense Mardochée a-t-il reçus pour cette fidélité? Ses serviteurs et ses officiers lui dirent : Il n'a reçu absolument aucune récompense. | 3 And the king said, "What honor or dignity has been bestowed on Mordecai for this?" The king's servants who attended him said, "Nothing has been done for him." |
| 4 Et le roi dit aussitôt : Qui est dans le parvis? Or Aman était entré dans la cour intérieure de la maison royale, pour suggérer au roi d'ordonner que Mardochée fût attaché à la potence qui lui avait été préparée. | 4 And the king said, "Who is in the court?" Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the king's palace to speak to the king about having Mordecai hanged on the gallows that he had prepared for him. |
| 5 Les serviteurs répondirent : Aman est dans le parvis. Et le roi dit : Qu'il entre. | 5 So the king's servants told him, "Haman is there, standing in the court." And the king said, "Let him come in." |
| 6 Et, lorsqu'il fut entré, le roi lui dit : Que doit-on faire à un homme que le roi désire honorer? Aman, pensant en lui-même et s'imaginant que le roi n'en voulait point honorer d'autre que lui, | 6 So Haman came in, and the king said to him, "What shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor?" And Haman said to himself, "Whom would the king delight to honor more than me?" |
| 7 répondit : L'homme que le roi veut honorer | 7 and Haman said to the king, "For the man whom the king delights to honor, |
| 8 doit être revêtu des habits royaux, placé sur le cheval que le roi monte, et recevoir le diadème royal sur sa tête, | 8 let royal robes be brought, which the king has worn, and the horse which the king has ridden, and on whose head a royal crown is set; |
| 9 et il faut que le premier des princes et des dignitaires royaux tienne son cheval, et que, marchant devant lui à travers la place de la ville, il crie : Ainsi sera honoré celui qu'il plaira au roi d'honorer. | 9 and let the robes and the horse be handed over to one of the king's most noble princes; let him array the man whom the king delights to honor, and let him conduct the man on horseback through the open square of the city, proclaiming before him: 'Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor.'" |
| 10 Et le roi lui dit : Hâtez-vous, prenez le vêtement royal et le cheval, et ce que vous avez dit, faites-le au Juif Mardochée qui est assis à la porte du palais. Prenez garde de ne rien omettre de tout ce que vous venez de dire. | 10 Then the king said to Haman, "Make haste, take the robes and the horse, as you have said, and do so to Mordecai the Jew who sits at the king's gate. Leave out nothing that you have mentioned." |
| 11 Aman prit donc le vêtement et le cheval. Et ayant revêtu Mardochée dans la place de la ville, et l'ayant fait monter sur le cheval, il marchait devant lui, et criait : C'est ainsi que mérite d'être honoré celui qu'il plaira au roi d'honorer. | 11 So Haman took the robes and the horse, and he arrayed Mordecai and made him ride through the open square of the city, proclaiming, "Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor." |
| 12 Et Mardochée revint à la porte du palais, et Aman se hâta d'aller à sa maison, désolé et la tête voilée. | 12 Then Mordecai returned to the king's gate. But Haman hurried to his house, mourning and with his head covered. |
| 13 Et il raconta à Zarès, sa femme, et à ses amis tout ce qui lui était arrivé. Les sages dont il prenait conseil et sa femme lui répondirent : Si ce Mardochée devant lequel vous avez commencé de tomber est de la race des Juifs, vous ne pourrez lui résister; mais vous tomberez devant lui. | 13 And Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had befallen him. Then his wise men and his wife Zeresh said to him, "If Mordecai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of the Jewish people, you will not prevail against him but will surely fall before him." |
| 14 Tandis qu'ils parlaient encore, les eunuques du roi survinrent, et l'obligèrent d'aller aussitôt au festin que la reine avait préparé. | 14 While they were yet talking with him, the king's eunuchs arrived and brought Haman in haste to the banquet that Esther had prepared. |
