| 1 Alors il commanda qu'on la fit entrer au lieu où étaient ses trésors, et qu'elle y demeurât, et il régla ce qu'on lui donnerait de sa table. | 1 Then he ordered her to enter where his valuables were stored, and he ordered her wait there, and he appointed what should be given to her from his own feast. |
| 2 Judith lui répondit et dit : Je ne pourrai pas manger maintenant des choses que vous commandez qu'on me donne, de peur d'attirer l'indignation de Dieu sur moi; mais je mangerai de ce que j'ai apporté avec moi. | 2 And Judith responded to him, and she said: “Now, I am not able to eat from these things which you instructed to be allotted to me, lest an offense come upon me. But I will eat from that which I have brought.” |
| 3 Holoferne lui dit : Si ce que vous avez apporté avec vous vient à manquer, que ferons-nous pour vous? | 3 And Holofernes said to her, “If these things that you have brought with you should fail you, what shall we do for you?” |
| 4 Et Judith lui dit : Je jure par votre vie, mon seigneur, qu'avant que votre servante ait consommé toutes ces choses, Dieu fera par ma main ce que j'ai pensé. Alors ses serviteurs la firent entrer dans la tente qu'il avait indiquée. | 4 And Judith said, “As your soul lives, my lord, your maidservant will not expend all these things, until God accomplishes by my hand what I have in mind.” And his servants led her into the tabernacle, as he instructed. |
| 5 Et elle demanda, en y entrant, qu'on lui permît de sortir la nuit et avant le jour, pour aller prier et invoquer le Seigneur. | 5 And, as she was entering, she requested that it be permitted to her to go outside at night, before daylight, in order to pray and to petition the Lord. |
| 6 Et il ordonna à ses serviteurs de la laisser entrer et sortir selon qu'elle le voudrait, pendant trois jours, pour adorer son Dieu. | 6 And he instructed his chamberlains that she may exit and enter, just as it may please her, to adore her God, for three days. |
| 7 Elle sortait donc durant les nuits dans la vallée de Béthulie, et elle se plongeait dans une fontaine. | 7 And she went out in the nights into the valley of Bethulia, and she washed herself in a fountain of water. |
| 8 Et, en remontant, elle priait le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël, afin qu'Il dirigeât ses voies pour la délivrance de Son peuple. | 8 And, as she climbed up, she prayed to the Lord God of Israel that he would direct her way, to the liberation of his people. |
| 9 Puis, rentrant dans sa tente, elle y demeurait purifiée, jusqu'à ce qu'elle prît sa nourriture vers le soir. | 9 And entering, she remained pure in the tabernacle, until she received her own food in the evening. |
| 10 Or il arriva qu'au quatrième jour Holoferne fit un festin à ses serviteurs, et il dit à Vagao, son eunuque : Allez, et persuadez à cette Juive qu'elle consente d'elle-même à habiter avec moi. | 10 And it happened on the fourth day that Holofernes made a supper for his servants, and he said to Vagao his eunuch: “Go, and persuade that Hebrew woman to willingly consent to live with me. |
| 11 Car, chez les Assyriens, il est honteux qu'une femme se raille d'un homme, en agissant de telle sorte qu'elle s'éloigne pure d'auprès de lui. | 11 For it is disgraceful among the Assyrians, if a woman mocks a man, acting so as to pass through with immunity from him.” |
| 12 Alors Vagao entra chez Judith, et dit : Pourquoi cette bonne fille craindrait-elle d'entrer chez mon seigneur, pour être honorée en sa présence, pour manger avec lui et pour boire du vin avec joie? | 12 Then Vagao entered toward Judith, and he said, “May she not dread, my good young woman, to enter to my lord, so that she may be honored before his face, so that she may eat with him and drink wine with cheerfulness.” |
| 13 Judith lui répondit : Qui suis-je, moi, pour m'opposer à la volonté de mon seigneur? | 13 Judith answered him: “Who am I, that I should contradict my lord? |
| 14 Je ferai tout ce qui sera bon et parfait à ses yeux; car ce qui lui sera agréable, sera aussi le plus grand bien qui puisse m'arriver dans toute ma vie. | 14 All that will be good and best before his eyes, I will do. Moreover, whatever will please him, to me, that will be what is best, all the days of my life.” |
| 15 Elle se leva ensuite, et elle se para de ses ornements; et étant entrée, elle parut devant lui. | 15 And she arose and dressed herself with her garments, and entering, she stood before his face. |
| 16 Or le coeur d'Holoferne fut saisi; car il brûlait de passion pour elle. | 16 But the heart of Holofernes was struck. For he was burning with desire for her. |
| 17 Et il lui dit : Buvez maintenant et mangez avec joie, car vous avez trouvé grâce devant moi. | 17 And Holofernes said to her, “Drink now, and recline with cheerfulness, for you have found favor before me.” |
| 18 Et Judith lui dit : Je boirai, seigneur, car mon âme reçoit aujourd'hui plus de gloire que dans toute ma vie. | 18 And Judith said, “I will drink, my lord, because my soul has been magnified this day, beyond all my days.” |
| 19 Elle prit ensuite ce que sa servante lui avait préparé, et elle mangea et but devant lui. | 19 And she accepted and ate and drank in his sight what her handmaid had prepared for her. |
| 20 Et Holoferne fut transporté de joie auprès d'elle, et but beaucoup de vin, plus qu'il n'en avait jamais bu dans toute sa vie. | 20 And Holofernes became pleased with her, and he drank very much wine, more than he had ever drunk in his life. |
