| 1 Après cela, les Moabites et les Ammonites avec leurs alliés s'assemblèrent contre Josaphat pour lui faire la guerre. | 1 It came to pass after this also, that the children of Moab, and the children of Ammon, and with them other beside the Ammonites, came against Jehoshaphat to battle. |
| 2 Des courriers vinrent l'annoncer à Josaphat, en disant : Une grande multitude s'avance contre vous des lieux qui sont au delà de la mer, et de la Syrie; et ils sont campés à Asasonthamar, qui est Engaddi. | 2 Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be Hazazon-tamar, which is En-gedi. |
| 3 Alors Josaphat, saisi de crainte, s'appliqua entièrement à prier le Seigneur, et publia un jeûne dans tout Juda. | 3 And Jehoshaphat feared, and set himself to seek the LORD, and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah. |
| 4 Et Juda s'assembla pour implorer le Seigneur, et tous vinrent de leurs villes pour L'invoquer. | 4 And Judah gathered themselves together, to ask help of the LORD: even out of all the cities of Judah they came to seek the LORD. |
| 5 Josaphat se tint debout au milieu de l'assemblée dans la maison du Seigneur, devant le nouveau vestibule, | 5 And Jehoshaphat stood in the congregation of Judah and Jerusalem, in the house of the LORD, before the new court, |
| 6 et il dit : Seigneur, Dieu de nos pères, Vous êtes le Dieu du Ciel, et Vous dominez sur tous les royaumes des nations; la force et la puissance sont dans Vos mains, et nul ne peut Vous résister. | 6 And said, O LORD God of our fathers, art not thou God in heaven? and rulest not thou over all the kingdoms of the heathen? and in thine hand is there not power and might, so that none is able to withstand thee? |
| 7 N'est-ce pas Vous, ô notre Dieu, qui avez fait mourir tous les habitants de cette terre, à la face de Votre peuple Israël, et qui l'avez donnée à la postérité d'Abraham, Votre ami, pour toujours? | 7 Art not thou our God, who didst drive out the inhabitants of this land before thy people Israel, and gavest it to the seed of Abraham thy friend for ever? |
| 8 Ils l'ont habitée et y ont bâti un sanctuaire à Votre nom, et ils ont dit: | 8 And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying, |
| 9 Si les maux fondent sur nous, le glaive du jugement, la peste, la famine, nous nous présenterons devant Vous dans cette maison où Votre nom a été invoqué, et nous crierons vers Vous dans nos afflictions; et Vous nous exaucerez, et Vous nous délivrerez. | 9 If, when evil cometh upon us, as the sword, judgment, or pestilence, or famine, we stand before this house, and in thy presence, (for thy name is in this house,) and cry unto thee in our affliction, then thou wilt hear and help. |
| 10 Voici donc maintenant que les fils d'Ammon et de Moab, et ceux de la montagne de Séir, chez lesquels Vous n'avez pas permis à Votre peuple Israël de passer lorsqu'il sortait d'Egypte, l'obligeant de prendre une autre route, et de ne les pas détruire; | 10 And now, behold, the children of Ammon and Moab and mount Seir, whom thou wouldest not let Israel invade, when they came out of the land of Egypt, but they turned from them, and destroyed them not; |
| 11 voici qu'ils tiennent une conduite bien différente, s'efforçant de nous chasser des terres que Vous nous avez données en possession. | 11 Behold, I say, how they reward us, to come to cast us out of thy possession, which thou hast given us to inherit. |
| 12 O notre Dieu, ne les jugerez-Vous pas? Car nous n'avons pas assez de force pour résister à cette multitude qui se précipite sur nous. Mais, ignorant ce que nous devons faire, il ne nous reste autre chose que de tourner les yeux vers Vous. | 12 O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee. |
| 13 Or tout Juda se tenait debout devant le Seigneur, avec les petits enfants, les femmes et leurs fils. | 13 And all Judah stood before the LORD, with their little ones, their wives, and their children. |
| 14 Là se trouva aussi Jahaziel, fils de Zacharie, fils de Banaïas, fils de Jéhiel, fils de Mathanias, lévite de la famille d'Asaph; et l'esprit de Dieu descendit sur lui au milieu de la foule, | 14 Then upon Jahaziel the son of Zechariah, the son of Benaiah, the son of Jeiel, the son of Mattaniah, a Levite of the sons of Asaph, came the Spirit of the LORD in the midst of the congregation; |
| 15 et il dit : Ecoutez, tout Juda, et vous habitants de Jérusalem, et vous aussi, roi Josaphat. Voici ce que le Seigneur vous dit : Ne craignez rien, et ne redoutez pas cette multitude. Ce ne sera pas vous qui combattrez, ce sera Dieu. | 15 And he said, Hearken ye, all Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem, and thou king Jehoshaphat, Thus saith the LORD unto you, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours, but God's. |
| 16 Demain vous irez au-devant d'eux, car ils monteront par le coteau du mont appelé Sis, et vous les rencontrerez à l'extrémité du torrent qui regarde le désert de Jéruel. | 16 To morrow go ye down against them: behold, they come up by the cliff of Ziz; and ye shall find them at the end of the brook, before the wilderness of Jeruel. |
| 17 Ce ne sera pas vous qui combattrez; demeurez seulement fermes, et vous verrez le secours du Seigneur sur vous, ô Juda et Jérusalem. Ne craignez point, et ne vous effrayez point; vous marcherez demain contre eux, et le Seigneur sera avec vous. | 17 Ye shall not need to fight in this battle: set yourselves, stand ye still, and see the salvation of the LORD with you, O Judah and Jerusalem: fear not, nor be dismayed; to morrow go out against them: for the LORD will be with you. |
| 18 Alors Josaphat et Juda, et tous les habitants de Jérusalem se prosternèrent jusqu'à terre devant le Seigneur, et L'adorèrent. | 18 And Jehoshaphat bowed his head with his face to the ground: and all Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem fell before the LORD, worshipping the LORD. |
| 19 Et en même temps les lévites de la famille de Caath et de celle de Coré louèrent hautement et de toute la force de leurs voix le Seigneur, le Dieu d'Israël. | 19 And the Levites, of the children of the Kohathites, and of the children of the Korhites, stood up to praise the LORD God of Israel with a loud voice on high. |
| 20 Le lendemain matin ils se levèrent, et s'avancèrent par le désert de Thécué. Et comme ils étaient en chemin, Josaphat se tint debout au milieu d'eux, et dit : Ecoutez-moi, hommes de Juda, et vous tous qui demeurez à Jérusalem. Confiez-vous au Seigneur votre Dieu, et vous n'aurez rien à craindre. Croyez à Ses prophètes, et tout vous réussira. | 20 And they rose early in the morning, and went forth into the wilderness of Tekoa: and as they went forth, Jehoshaphat stood and said, Hear me, O Judah, and ye inhabitants of Jerusalem; Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper. |
| 21 Après avoir donné ses avis au peuple, il établit par troupes des chantres pour louer le Seigneur. Ils marchaient devant l'armée, et tous ne faisant qu'un choeur, ils chantaient : Louez le Seigneur, parce que Sa miséricorde est éternelle. | 21 And when he had consulted with the people, he appointed singers unto the LORD, and that should praise the beauty of holiness, as they went out before the army, and to say, Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever. |
| 22 Tandis qu'ils commençaient à chanter ces louanges, le Seigneur tourna les embuscades des ennemis contre eux-mêmes, c'est-à-dire des fils d'Ammon et de Moab, et des habitants du mont Séir, qui s'étaient mis en marche pour battre Juda, et qui furent défaits. | 22 And when they began to sing and to praise, the LORD set ambushments against the children of Ammon, Moab, and mount Seir, which were come against Judah; and they were smitten. |
| 23 Car les fils d'Ammon et de Moab se mirent à combattre ceux du mont Séir, les tuèrent et les exterminèrent. Et cela fait, ils tournèrent aussi leurs armes contre eux-mêmes, et ils s'entre-tuèrent les uns les autres. | 23 For the children of Ammon and Moab stood up against the inhabitants of mount Seir, utterly to slay and destroy them: and when they had made an end of the inhabitants of Seir, every one helped to destroy another. |
| 24 Lorsque l'armée de Juda fut arrivée sur la hauteur, d'où l'on découvre le désert, elle vit de loin toute la région couverte de cadavres, sans qu'il fût resté un seul homme qui eût pu s'échapper. | 24 And when Judah came toward the watch tower in the wilderness, they looked unto the multitude, and, behold, they were dead bodies fallen to the earth, and none escaped. |
| 25 Josaphat s'avança donc avec tout son monde, pour prendre les dépouilles des morts; ils trouvèrent parmi les cadavres divers ustensiles, des vêtements et des vases très précieux dont ils s'emparèrent; de sorte qu'ils ne purent tout emporter, ni enlever pendant trois jours ces dépouilles, tant le butin fut grand. | 25 And when Jehoshaphat and his people came to take away the spoil of them, they found among them in abundance both riches with the dead bodies, and precious jewels, which they stripped off for themselves, more than they could carry away: and they were three days in gathering of the spoil, it was so much. |
| 26 Le quatrième jour ils s'assemblèrent dans la vallée de Bénédiction; car, parce qu'ils y avaient béni le Seigneur, ils nommèrent ce lieu la vallée de Bénédiction, et ce nom lui est demeuré jusqu'à ce jour. | 26 And on the fourth day they assembled themselves in the valley of Berachah; for there they blessed the LORD: therefore the name of the same place was called, The valley of Berachah, unto this day. |
| 27 Tous les habitants de Juda et les hommes de Jérusalem, ayant Josaphat devant eux, revinrent à Jérusalem avec une grande joie, car le Seigneur les avait fait triompher de leurs ennemis. | 27 Then they returned, every man of Judah and Jerusalem, and Jehoshaphat in the forefront of them, to go again to Jerusalem with joy; for the LORD had made them to rejoice over their enemies. |
| 28 Ils entrèrent donc à Jérusalem et dans le temple au son des luths, des guitares et des trompettes. | 28 And they came to Jerusalem with psalteries and harps and trumpets unto the house of the LORD. |
| 29 Et la terreur du Seigneur se répandit sur tous les royaumes voisins, lorsqu'ils eurent appris que le Seigneur avait combattu contre les ennemis d'Israël. | 29 And the fear of God was on all the kingdoms of those countries, when they had heard that the LORD fought against the enemies of Israel. |
| 30 Et le royaume de Josaphat fut tranquille, et Dieu lui donna la paix avec ses voisins. | 30 So the realm of Jehoshaphat was quiet: for his God gave him rest round about. |
| 31 Josaphat règna donc sur Juda. Il commença à régner à l'âge de trente-cinq ans, et il en régna vingt-cinq à Jérusalem. Sa mère se nommait Azuba, et était fille de Sélahi. | 31 And Jehoshaphat reigned over Judah: he was thirty and five years old when he began to reign, and he reigned twenty and five years in Jerusalem. And his mother's name was Azubah the daughter of Shilhi. |
| 32 Il marcha dans les voies de son père Asa, et ne s'en détourna point; et il fit ce qui était agréable aux yeux du Seigneur. | 32 And he walked in the way of Asa his father, and departed not from it, doing that which was right in the sight of the LORD. |
| 33 Néanmoins il ne détruisit pas les hauts lieux, et le peuple n'avait pas encore tourné son coeur vers le Seigneur, le Dieu de ses pères. | 33 Howbeit the high places were not taken away: for as yet the people had not prepared their hearts unto the God of their fathers. |
| 34 Le reste des actions de Josaphat, tant les premières que les dernières, est écrit dans l'histoire de Jéhu, fils d'Hanani, laquelle a été insérée dans le livre des rois d'Israël. | 34 Now the rest of the acts of Jehoshaphat, first and last, behold, they are written in the book of Jehu the son of Hanani, who is mentioned in the book of the kings of Israel. |
| 35 Après cela, Josaphat, roi de Juda, fit amitié avec Ochozias, roi d'Israël, dont les actions furent très impies. | 35 And after this did Jehoshaphat king of Judah join himself with Ahaziah king of Israel, who did very wickedly: |
| 36 Et il convint avec lui qu'ils équiperaient une flotte pour aller à Tharsis. Ils firent donc bâtir des vaisseaux à Asiongaber. | 36 And he joined himself with him to make ships to go to Tarshish: and they made the ships in Ezion-geber. |
| 37 Eliézer, fils de Dodaü de Marésa, prophétisa à Josaphat, et lui dit : Parce que vous avez fait alliance avec Ochozias, Dieu a renversé vos desseins. Les vaisseaux furent donc brisés, et ils ne purent aller à Tharsis. | 37 Then Eliezer the son of Dodavah of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, Because thou hast joined thyself with Ahaziah, the LORD hath broken thy works. And the ships were broken, that they were not able to go to Tarshish. |
