| 2 David dit donc à Joab et aux chefs du peuple : Allez, et faites le dénombrement de tout Israël, depuis Bersabée jusqu'à Dan, et apportez-m'en le rôle, afin que je le connaisse. | 2 David therefore said to Joab and to the other generals of the army, "Go, find out the number of the Israelites from Beer-sheba to Dan, and report back to me that I may know their number." |
| 3 Joab lui répondit : Que le Seigneur daigne multiplier Son peuple au centuple de ce qu'il est maintenant. Monseigneur le roi, tous ne sont-ils pas Vos serviteurs? Pourquoi recherchez-vous une chose qui sera imputée à péché à Israël? | 3 But Joab replied: "May the LORD increase his people a hundredfold! My lord king, are not all of them my lord's subjects? Why does my lord seek to do this thing? Why will he bring guilt upon Israel?" |
| 4 Néanmoins le commandement du roi l'emporta. Joab partit donc et parcourut tout Israël, et il revint à Jérusalem. | 4 However, the king's command prevailed over Joab, who departed and traversed all of Israel, and then returned to Jerusalem. |
| 5 Il donna à David le dénombrement de tous ceux qu'il avait comptés, et il se trouva onze cent mille hommes d'Israël, tous capables de porter les armes; et quatre cent soixante-dix mille guerriers de Juda. | 5 Joab reported the result of the census to David: of men capable of wielding a sword, there were in all Israel one million one hundred thousand, and in Judah four hundred and seventy thousand. |
| 6 Joab ne fit point le dénombrement de la tribu de Lévi ni de celle de Benjamin, parce qu'il n'exécutait qu'à regret l'ordre du roi. | 6 Levi and Benjamin, however, he did not include in the census, for the king's command was repugnant to Joab. |
| 7 Et cet ordre déplut à Dieu, qui frappa Israël. | 7 This command displeased God, who began to punish Israel. |
| 8 Mais David dit à Dieu : J'ai commis une grande faute en agissant ainsi. Je Vous prie de pardonner cette iniquité à Votre serviteur, car j'ai fait une folie. | 8 Then David said to God, "I have sinned greatly in doing this thing. Take away your servant's guilt, for I have acted very foolishly." |
| 9 Alors le Seigneur parla à Gad, prophète de David, et lui dit: | 9 Then the LORD spoke to Gad, David's seer, in these words: |
| 10 Allez trouver David, et dites-lui : Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Je vous donne le choix de trois choses; choisissez celle que vous voudrez, et Je suivrai votre choix. | 10 "Go, tell David: Thus says the LORD: I offer you three alternatives; choose one of them, and I will inflict it on you." |
| 11 Gad vint donc trouver David, et lui dit : Voici ce que dit le Seigneuour : Choisissez ce que vous voudrez: | 11 Accordingly, Gad went to David and said to him; "Thus says the LORD: Decide now-- |
| 12 ou de souffrir la famine durant trois ans; ou de fuir devant vos ennemis durant trois mois, sans pouvoir éviter leur glaive; ou d'être sous le glaive du Seigneur durant trois jours, la peste étant dans vos Etats, et l'Ange du Seigneur donnant la mort dans toutes les terres d'Israël. Voyez donc ce que je dois répondre à Celui qui m'a envoyé. | 12 will it be three years of famine; or three months of fleeing your enemies, with the sword of your foes ever at your back; or three days of the LORD'S own sword, a pestilence in the land, with the LORD'S destroying angel in every part of Israel? Therefore choose: What answer am I to give him who sent me?" |
| 13 Et David dit à Gad : De tout côté l'angoisse me presse; cependant il est meilleur pour moi de tomber entre les mains du Seigneur, car Il est plein de miséricorde, que dans les mains des hommes. | 13 Then David said to Gad: "I am in dire straits. But I prefer to fall into the hand of the LORD, whose mercy is very great, than into the hands of men." |
| 14 Le Seigneur envoya donc la peste en Israël, et il mourut soixante-dix mille Israélites. | 14 Therefore the LORD sent pestilence upon Israel, and seventy thousand men of Israel died. |
| 15 Il envoya aussi Son Ange à Jérusalem pour la frapper; et comme elle était frappée, le Seigneur la regarda, et fut touché de compassion d'une plaie si terrible. Il dit donc à l'Ange exterminateur : C'est assez; arrêtez votre main. Or l'Ange du Seigneur était près de l'aire d'Ornan le Jébuséen. | 15 God also sent an angel to destroy Jerusalem; but as he was on the point of destroying it, the LORD saw and decided against the calamity, and said to the destroying angel, "Enough now! Stay your hand!"The angel of the LORD was then standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. |
| 16 Et David, levant les yeux, vit l'Ange du Seigneur, qui était entre le ciel et la terre, et qui avait à la main une épée nue et tournée contre Jérusalem. Alors David et les anciens qui étaient avec lui, couverts de cilices, se prosternèrent en terre. | 16 When David raised his eyes, he saw the angel of the LORD standing between earth and heaven, with a naked sword in his hand stretched out against Jerusalem. David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, prostrated themselves face to the ground, |
| 17 Et David dit à Dieu : N'est-ce pas moi qui ai commandé de faire ce dénombrement du peuple? C'est moi qui ai péché; c'est moi qui ai commis le mal; quant à ce troupeau, qu'a-t-il mérité? Tournez donc, je Vous prie, Seigneur mon Dieu, Votre main contre moi et contre la maison de mon père; mais épargnez Votre peuple. | 17 and David prayed to God: "Was it not I who ordered the census of the people? I am the one who sinned, I did this wicked thing. But these sheep, what have they done? O LORD, my God, strike me and my father's family, but do not afflict your people with this plague!" |
| 18 Alors l'Ange du Seigneur commanda à Gad de dire à David de venir et de dresser un autel au Seigneur Dieu, dans l'aire d'Ornan le Jébuséen. | 18 Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to tell David to go up and erect an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. |
| 19 David y monta donc, suivant l'ordre que Gad lui en avait signifié de la part de Dieu. | 19 David went up at Gad's command, given in the name of the LORD. |
| 20 Mais Ornan et ses quatre fils, ayant levé les yeux et vu l'Ange, se cachèrent, car ils battaient alors leurs grains dans leur aire. | 20 While Ornan was threshing wheat, he turned around and saw the king, and his four sons who were with him, without recognizing them. |
| 21 Lors donc que David approchait, Ornan l'aperçut, et, sortant de son aire pour aller au-devant de lui, il se prosterna devant lui jusqu'à terre. | 21 But as David came on toward him, he looked up and saw that it was David. Then he left the threshing floor and bowed down before David, his face to the ground. |
| 22 David lui dit : Donnez-moi la place qu'occupe votre aire, afin que j'y dresse un autel au Seigneur, et que je fasse cesser cette plaie de dessus le peuple, et je vous en payerai le prix qu'elle vaut. | 22 David said to Ornan: "Sell me the ground of this threshing floor, that I may build on it an altar to the LORD. Sell it to me at its full price, that the plague may be stayed from the people." |
| 23 Ornan dit à David : Le roi mon seigneur n'a qu'à la prendre et à en faire ce qu'il lui plaira. Je lui donnerai aussi les boeufs pour l'holocauste, les traîneaux en guise de bois, et le blé qui est nécessaire pour le sacrifice. Je donnerai toutes ces choses avec joie. | 23 But Ornan said to David: "Take it as your own, and let my lord the king do what seems best to him. See, I also give you the oxen for the holocausts, the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for the cereal offering. I give it all to you." |
| 24 Le roi David lui dit : Il n'en sera pas ainsi, mais je vous en payerai le prix. Car je ne dois pas vous dépouiller pour offrir au Seigneur des holocaustes qui ne me coûtent rien. | 24 But King David replied to Ornan: "No! I will buy it from you properly, at its full price. I will not take what is yours for the LORD, nor offer up holocausts that cost me nothing." |
| 25 David donna donc à Ornan pour l'emplacement six cents sicles d'or d'un poids très juste. | 25 So David paid Ornan six hundred shekels of gold for the place. |
| 26 Et il dressa là un autel au Seigneur, et y offrit des holocaustes et des hosties pacifiques. Et il invoqua le Seigneur, qui l'exauça en faisant descendre le feu du ciel sur l'autel de l'holocauste. | 26 David then built an altar there to the LORD, and offered up holocausts and peace offerings. When he called upon the LORD, he answered him by sending down fire from heaven upon the altar of holocausts. |
| 27 Alors le Seigneur commanda à l'Ange de remettre son épée dans le fourreau; ce qu'il fit. | 27 Then the LORD gave orders to the angel to return his sword to its sheath. |
| 28 Et aussitôt David, voyant que le Seigneur l'avait exaucé dans l'aire d'Ornan le Jébuséen, lui immola des victimes en ce lieu. | 28 Once David saw that the LORD had heard him on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he continued to offer sacrifices there. |
| 29 Le tabernacle du Seigneur que Moïse avait construit dans le désert, et l'autel des holocaustes, étaient alors au haut lieu de Gabaon. | 29 The Dwelling of the LORD, which Moses had built in the desert, and the altar of holocausts were at that time on the high place at Gibeon. |
| 30 Et David ne put pas aller jusqu'à cet autel pour y offrir sa prière à Dieu, car il avait été frappé d'une trop grande frayeur, en voyant l'épée de l'Ange du Seigneur. | 30 But David could not go there to worship God, for he was fearful of the sword of the angel of the LORD. |
