"Remain at Jericho," the king told them, "until your beards have grown again; and then you may come back here." |

| 11 Il donna le reste de l'armée à Abisaï, son frère, pour marcher contre les Ammonites; | 11 the rest of the army, which he placed under the command of his brother Abishai, then lined up to oppose the Ammonites. |
| 12 et il lui dit : Si les Syriens ont de l'avantage sur moi, tu viendras à mon secours; et si les Ammonites en ont sur toi, j'irai aussi te secourir. | 12 And he said: "If the Arameans prove too strong for me, you must come to my help; and if the Ammonites prove too strong for you, I will save you. |
| 13 Agis en homme de coeur, et combattons généreusement pour notre peuple et pour les villes de notre Dieu; et le Seigneur ordonnera de tout comme il Lui plaira. | 13 Hold steadfast and let us show ourselves courageous for the sake of our people and the cities of our God; then may the LORD do what seems best to him." |
| 14 Joab marcha donc contre les Syriens avec les troupes qu'il commandait, et il les mit en fuite. | 14 Joab therefore advanced with his men to engage the Arameans in battle; but they fled before him. |
| 15 Les Ammonites, voyant que les Syriens avaient pris la fuite, s'enfuirent aussi eux-mêmes de devant son frère Abisaï, et se retirèrent dans la ville. Et Joab s'en retourna à Jérusalem. | 15 And when the Ammonites saw that the Arameans had fled, they also took to flight before his brother Abishai, and reentered the city. Joab then returned to Jerusalem. |
| 16 Et lorsque les Syriens eurent vu qu'ils avaient été battus par Israël, ils envoyèrent chercher les autres Syriens qui étaient au delà du fleuve. Sophach, général de l'armée d'Adarézer, les commandait. | 16 Seeing themselves vanquished by Israel, the Arameans sent messengers to bring out the Arameans from the other side of the River, with Shophach, the general of Hadadezer's army, at their head. |

| 19 Alors tous les serviteurs d'Adarézer, se voyant vaincus par les Israélites, passèrenta dans le parti de David, et lui furent assujettis. Et les Syriens ne voulurent plus donner de secours aux Ammonites. | 19 When the vassals of Hadadezer saw themselves vanquished by Israel, they made peace with David and became his subjects. After this, the Arameans refused to come to the aid of the Ammonites. |
