| 1 Elisée lui répondit : Ecoutez la parole du Seigneur : Voici ce que dit le Seigneur : Demain à cette même heure, on aura une mesure de pure farine pour un sicle à la porte de Samarie et deux mesures d'orge pour un sicle. | 1 Then Elisha said: “Listen to the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord: Tomorrow, at this time, one measure of fine wheat flour will be one silver coin, and two measures of barley will be one silver coin, at the gate of Samaria.” |
| 2 Un des officiers, sur la main duquel le roi s'appuyait, répondit à l'homme de Dieu : Quand le Seigneur ferait pleuvoir des vivres du ciel, ce que vous dites pourrait-il être? Elisée lui répondit : Vous le verrez de vos yeux, et vous n'en mangerez pas. | 2 And one of the leaders, upon whose hand the king leaned, responding to the man of God, said, “Even if the Lord will open the floodgates of heaven, how can what you say possibly be?” And he said, “You will see it with your own eyes, and you will not eat from it.” |
| 3 Or il y avait à l'entrée de la porte quatre lépreux, qui se dirent l'un à l'autre : Pourquoi demeurons-nous ici jusqu'à ce que nous mourions? | 3 Now there were four lepers beside the entrance of the gate. And they said one to another: “Should we choose to stay here until we die? |
| 4 Si nous voulons entrer dans la ville, nous mourons de faim; si nous demeurons ici, il nous faut mourir. Allons donc nous réfugier au camp des Syriens, et rendons-nous à eux. S'ils ont pitié de nous, nous vivrons; et s'ils veulent nous tuer, nous mourons. | 4 If we choose to enter the city, we will die from the famine. And if we remain here, we also will die. Therefore, come and let us flee over to the camp of the Syrians. If they spare us, we will live. But if they choose to kill us, we will die anyway.” |
| 5 Ils partirent donc le soir pour aller au camp des Syriens. Et étant venus à l'entrée du camp, ils n'y trouvèrent personne. | 5 Therefore, they rose up in the evening, so that they might go to the camp of the Syrians. And when they had arrived at the beginning of the camp of the Syrians, they found no one in that place. |
| 6 Car le Seigneur avait fait entendre dans le camp des Syriens un bruit de chars, de chevaux, et d'une armée nombreuse; et les Syriens s'étaient dit l'un à l'autre : Le roi d'Israël a pris à sa solde contre nous les rois des Héthéens et des Egyptiens, et les voilà qui viennent sur nous. | 6 For indeed, the Lord had caused them to hear, in the camp of Syria, the sound of chariots and horses, and a very numerous army. And they said one to another: “Behold, the king of Israel has paid wages to the kings of the Hittites and of the Egyptians against us. And they will overwhelm us.” |
| 7 Ils se levèrent donc et prirent la fuite dans les ténèbres, abandonnant leurs tentes, les chevaux et les ânes dans le camp, et ils s'enfuirent, ne pensant qu'à sauver leur vie. | 7 Therefore, they rose up and fled away in the dark. And they left behind their tents and horses and donkeys in the camp. And they fled, desiring to save so much as their own lives. |
| 8 Ces lépreux, étant donc venus à l'entrée du camp, entrèrent dans une tente, y mangèrent et y burent; et ils prirent de l'argent, de l'or et des vêtements, et ils s'en allèrent les cacher; puis revinrent, entrèrent dans une autre tente, et en emportèrent de même des objets qu'ils cachèrent. | 8 And so, when these lepers had arrived at the beginning of the camp, they entered one tent, and they ate and drank. And they took from there silver, and gold, and clothing. And they went away and hid it. And they returned again to another tent, and similarly, carrying away from there, they hid it. |
| 9 Alors ils se dirent l'un à l'autre : Nous ne faisons pas bien; car ce jour est un jour de bonne nouvelle. Si nous gardons le silence, et si nous n'en donnons point avis avant demain matin, on nous accusera comme d'un crime. Allons donc porter cette nouvelle à la cour du roi. | 9 Then they said one to another: “We are not doing the right thing. For this is a day of good news. If we remain silent and refuse to report it until morning, we will be charged with a crime. Come, let us go and report it in the court of the king.” |
| 10 Lorsqu'ils furent venus à la porte de la ville, ils parlèrent aux gardes et leur dirent : Nous sommes allés au camp des Syriens, et nous n'y avons pas trouvé un seul homme, mais seulement des chevaux et des ânes attachés, et les tentes dressées. | 10 And when they had arrived at the gate of the city, they explained to them, saying: “We went into the camp of the Syrians, and we found no one in that place, except horses and donkeys tied, and the tents still standing.” |
| 11 Les gardes de la porte allèrent donc, et ils portèrent cette nouvelle à l'intérieur du palais du roi. | 11 Therefore, the gatekeepers went and reported it in the palace of the king. |
| 12 Le roi se leva, quoiqu'il fût nuit, et dit à ses serviteurs : Je vais vous dire ce que nous font les Syriens. Comme ils savent que la faim nous presse, ils sont sortis de leur camp et se sont cachés dans les champs, en disant : Ils sortiront de la ville, et nous les prendrons vivants, et alors nous pourrons entrer dans la ville. | 12 And he rose up in the night, and he said to his servants: “I tell you what the Syrians have done to us. They know that we are suffering from famine, and therefore they have gone out from the camp, and they lie hidden in the fields, saying: ‘When they will have gone out from the city, we will capture them alive, and then we will be able to enter the city.’ ” |
| 13 L'un des serviteurs du roi lui répondit : Prenons les cinq chevaux qui sont restés dans la ville, de tout ce grand nombre qui était dans Israël, tous les autres ayant été mangés; et envoyons reconnaître l'état des choses. | 13 But one of his servants responded: “Let us take the five horses that remain in the city (for there were no more amid the entire multitude of Israel, since the rest had been consumed), and sending, we will be able to explore.” |
| 14 On amena donc deux chevaux. Et le roi envoya des messagers dans le camp des Syriens, et leur dit : Allez, et voyez. | 14 Therefore, they brought two horses. And the king sent them into the camp of the Syrians, saying, “Go, and see.” |
| 15 Ils allèrent donc après les Syriens jusqu'au Jourdain, et voici que toute la route était pleine de vêtements et d'objets que les Syriens avaient jetés dans leur trouble; et les messagers revinrent l'annoncer au roi. | 15 And they went away after them, as far as the Jordan. But behold, the entire way was filled with clothing and vessels, which the Syrians had thrown aside when they were disturbed. And the messengers returned and told the king. |
| 16 Le peuple sortit, et pilla le camp des Syriens; et on eut une mesure de pure farine pour un sicle, et deux mesures d'orge pour un sicle, selon la parole du Seigneur. | 16 And the people, going out, pillaged the camp of the Syrians. And one measure of fine wheat flour went for one silver coin, and two measures of barley went for one silver coin, in accord with the word of the Lord. |
| 17 Or le roi avait placé à la porte de la ville cet officier sur la main duquel il s'appuyait, et le foule l'écrasa à l'entrée de la porte, et il mourut, selon que l'homme de Dieu le lui avait prédit lorsque le roi était descendu chez lui. | 17 Then the king stationed that leader, on whose hand he leaned, at the gate. And the crowd trampled him at the entrance of the gate. And he died, in accord with what the man of God had said when the king had descended to him. |
| 18 C'est ainsi que s'accomplit ce qu'avait prédit l'homme de Dieu, lorsqu'il dit au roi : Demain, à cette même heure, on aura deux mesures d'orge pour un sicle, et une mesure de pure farine pour un sicle, à la porte de Samarie. | 18 And this happened in accord with the word of the man of God, which he had spoken to the king, when he said: “Two measures of barley will be one silver coin, and one measure of fine wheat flour will be one silver coin, at this same time tomorrow, at the gate of Samaria.” |
| 19 Et cet officier ayant dit à l'homme de Dieu : Quand le Seigneur ferait pleuvoir des vivres du ciel, ce que vous dites ne pourrait pas être; l'homme de Dieu lui avait répondu : Vous le verrez de vos yeux, et vous n'en mangerez pas. | 19 Then that leader had responded to the man of God, and he had said, “Even if the Lord will open the floodgates of heaven, how can what you say possibly happen?” And he said to him, “You will see it with your own eyes, and you will not eat from it.” |
| 20 Car ce qu'Elisée avait prédit lui arriva; et le peuple l'écrasa à la porte, et il mourut. | 20 Therefore, it happened to him just as it had been predicted. For the people trampled him at the gate, and he died. |
