| 3 Il fit ce qui était juste devant le Seigneur, mais non comme David son père. Il se conduisit en tout comme Joas son père s'était conduit; | 3 He did what Yahweh regards as right, though not like his ancestor David; he imitated his father Joashin all respects. |
| 4 si ce n'est qu'il ne fit pas disparaître les hauts lieux; car le peuple y sacrifiait encore, et y brûlait de l'encens. | 4 The high places, however, were not abolished, and the people stil offered sacrifices and incense onthe high places. |
| 5 Lorsqu'il eut affermi sa royauté, il fit mourir ceux de ses serviteurs qui avaient tué le roi son père; | 5 Once the kingdom was firmly under his control, he kil ed those of his retainers who had murdered theking his father. |
| 6 mais il ne fit point mourir leurs enfants, selon ce qui est écrit au livre de la loi de Moïse, et selon cette ordonnance du Seigneur : Les pères ne mourront point pour les fils, et les fils ne mourront point pour les pères; mais chacun mourra pour son péché. | 6 But he did not put the murderers' sons to death, in accordance with what is written in the Book ofMoses, where Yahweh has commanded: 'Parents may not be put to death for their children, nor children forparents, but each must be put to death for his own crime.' |
| 7 C'est lui qui battit dix mille Iduméens dans la vallée des Salines, et qui prit d'assaut une forteresse qu'il appela Jectéhel, comme elle s'appelle encore aujourd'hui. | 7 It was he who slaughtered the Edomites in the Valley of Salt, ten thousand of them, and captured theRock; he gave it the name Joktheel, which it bears to the present day. |
| 8 Alors Amasias envoya des ambassadeurs vers Joas, fils de Joachaz, fils de Jéhu, roi d'Israël, pour lui dire : Venez, et voyons-nous. | 8 Amaziah then sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, king of Israel, saying, 'Come and make atrial of strength!' |
| 9 Joas, roi d'Israël, fit dire à Amasias, roi de Juda : Le chardon du Liban envoya vers le cèdre qui est au Liban et lui fit dire : Donnez votre fille pour femme à mon fils. Mais les bêtes de la forêt du Liban passèrent et foulèrent aux pieds le chardon. | 9 Jehoash king of Israel sent back word to Amaziah king of Judah, 'The thistle of Lebanon sent amessage to the cedar of Lebanon, saying, "Give my son your daughter in marriage"; but a wild animal of theLebanon ran over the thistle and squashed it. |
| 10 Vous avez frappé les Iduméens, et vous les avez battus, et votre coeur s'est soulevé. Soyez content de votre gloire, et demeurez dans votre maison. Pourquoi provoquez-vous votre malheur, pour périr vous-même, et Juda avec vous? | 10 You have conquered Edom and now aspire to even greater glory. Stay where you belong! Whyprovoke disaster, to your own and Judah's ruin?' |
| 11 Mais Amasias ne l'écouta pas, et Joas, roi d'Israël, marcha contre lui; et ils se virent, lui et Amasias, roi de Juda, près de Bethsamès, ville de Juda. | 11 But Amaziah would not listen, so Jehoash king of Israel marched to the attack. And at Beth-Shemesh,which belongs to Judah, he and Amaziah king of Judah made their trial of strength. |
| 12 Et l'armée de Juda fut battue par Israël, et chacun s'enfuit chez soi. | 12 Judah was defeated by Israel, and everyone fled to his tent. |
| 13 Et Joas, roi d'Israël, prit à Bethsamès Amasias, roi de Juda, fils de Joas, fils d'Ochozias, et l'emmena à Jérusalem. | 16 Et Joas s'endormit enfin avec ses pères, et il fut enseveli à Samarie avec les rois d'Israël; et Jéroboam son fils régna à sa place. | 16 Then Joash fel asleep with his ancestors, and was buried in Samaria with the kings of Israel; his sonJeroboam succeeded him. |
| 17 Mais Amasias, fils de Joas, roi de Juda, régna encore quinze ans après la mort de Joas, fils de Joachaz, roi d'Israël. | 17 Amaziah son of Joash, king of Judah, lived for fifteen years after the death of Jehoash son ofJehoahaz, king of Israel. |

| 26 Car le Seigneur vit l'affliction d'Israël à son comble; Il vit qu'ils étaient tous consumés, jusqu'à ceux qui étaient renfermés en prison, et jusqu'aux derniers du peuple, sans qu'il y eût personne qui secourût Israël. | 26 For Yahweh had seen how very bitter the affliction of Israel was, with no one, either fettered or free, tocome to Israel's help. |
| 27 Et le Seigneur ne voulut pas effacer le nom d'Israël de dessous le ciel, mais Il les sauva par la main de Jéroboam, fils de Joas. | 27 But Yahweh had resolved not to blot out the name of Israel under heaven; he rescued them by meansof Jeroboam son of Joash. |
