| 1 Il se fit donc une longue guerre entre la maison de Saül et la maison de David; David s'avançant toujours et se fortifiant de plus en plus, et la maison de Saül, au contraire, s'affaiblissant de jour en jour. | 1 Now there was long war between the house of Saul and the house of David: but David waxed stronger and stronger, and the house of Saul waxed weaker and weaker. |
| 2 Et il naquit à David des fils à Hébron. L'aîné fut Amnon, qu'il eut d'Achinoam, de Jezraël. | 2 And unto David were sons born in Hebron: and his firstborn was Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; |
| 3 Le second, Chéléab, qu'il eut d'Abigaïl, veuve de Nabal, de Carmel. Le troisième, Absalom, qu'il eut de Maacha, fille de Tholmaï, roi de Gessur. | 3 And his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur; |
| 4 Le quatrième, Adonias, fils d'Haggith. Le cinquième, Saphathia, fils d'Abithal. | 4 And the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith; and the fifth, Shephatiah the son of Abital; |

| 6 La maison de Saül était donc en guerre avec la maison de David, et Abner, fils de Ner, était le chef de la maison de Saül. | 6 And it came to pass, while there was war between the house of Saul and the house of David, that Abner made himself strong for the house of Saul. |
| 7 Or Saül avait eu une concubine nommée Respha, fille d'Aïa. Et Isboseth dit à Abner: | 7 And Saul had a concubine, whose name was Rizpah, the daughter of Aiah: and Ish-bosheth said to Abner, Wherefore hast thou gone in unto my father's concubine? |
| 8 Pourquoi vous êtes-vous approché de la concubine de mon père? Abner, vivement irrité de ce reproche, lui répondit : Suis-je aujourd'hui une tête de chien, après ce que j'ai fait contre Juda? J'ai rendu toute sorte de services à la maison de Saül votre père, à ses frères et à ses proches, et je ne vous ai point livré entre les mains de David. Et après cela vous venez aujourd'hui chercher des prétextes de m'accuser à propos d'une femme? | 8 Then was Abner very wroth for the words of Ish-bosheth, and said, Am I a dog's head, which against Judah do shew kindness this day unto the house of Saul thy father, to his brethren, and to his friends, and have not delivered thee into the hand of David, that thou chargest me to day with a fault concerning this woman? |
| 9 Que Dieu traite Abner avec toute sa sévérité, si je ne procure à David ce que le Seigneur a juré en sa faveur, | 9 So do God to Abner, and more also, except, as the LORD hath sworn to David, even so I do to him; |
| 10 en faisant que le royaume soit transféré de la maison de Saül en la sienne, et que le trône de David soit élevé sur Israël et sur Juda, depuis Dan jusqu'à Bersabée. | 10 To translate the kingdom from the house of Saul, and to set up the throne of David over Israel and over Judah, from Dan even to Beer-sheba. |
| 11 Et Isboseth n'osa lui rien répondre, parce qu'il le craignait. | 11 And he could not answer Abner a word again, because he feared him. |
| 12 Abner envoya donc des messagers à David pour lui dire de sa part : A qui appartient tout ce pays? Faites alliance avec moi, et je prendrai votre parti, et je ferai que tout Israël se réunisse à vous. | 12 And Abner sent messengers to David on his behalf, saying, Whose is the land? saying also, Make thy league with me, and, behold, my hand shall be with thee, to bring about all Israel unto thee. |
| 13 David lui répondit : Je le veux bien, je ferai alliance avec vous; mais je vous demande une chose : Vous ne me verrez point que vous ne m'ayez envoyé auparavant Michol, fille de Saül; après cela vous viendrez et vous me verrez. | 13 And he said, Well; I will make a league with thee: but one thing I require of thee, that is, Thou shalt not see my face, except thou first bring Michal Saul's daughter, when thou comest to see my face. |
| 14 David envoya ensuite des messagers à Isboseth, fils de Saül, et lui fit dire : Rendez-moi Michol, ma femme, que j'ai épousée pour cent prépuces de Philistins. | 14 And David sent messengers to Ish-bosheth Saul's son, saying, Deliver me my wife Michal, which I espoused to me for an hundred foreskins of the Philistines. |
| 15 Isboseth l'envoya donc chercher, et l'enleva à son mari, Phaltiel, fils de Laïs. | 15 And Ish-bosheth sent, and took her from her husband, even from Phaltiel the son of Laish. |
| 16 Son mari la suivait en pleurant jusqu'à Bahurim. Et Abner lui dit : Allez, retournez-vous-en; et il s'en retourna. | 16 And her husband went with her along weeping behind her to Bahurim. Then said Abner unto him, Go, return. And he returned. |
| 17 Après cela Abner parla aux anciens d'Israël, et leur dit : Il y a déjà longtemps que vous souhaitiez d'avoir David pour roi. | 17 And Abner had communication with the elders of Israel, saying, Ye sought for David in times past to be king over you: |
| 18 Faites-le donc maintenant; puisque le Seigneur a parlé à David, et dit de lui : C'est par la main de David Mon serviteur que Je sauverai Mon peuple Israël de la main des Philistins, et de tous ses ennemis. | 18 Now then do it: for the LORD hath spoken of David, saying, By the hand of my servant David I will save my people Israel out of the hand of the Philistines, and out of the hand of all their enemies. |
| 19 Abner parla aussi à Benjamin; et il alla à Hébron, pour dire à David tout ce qu'Israël et tous ceux de la tribu de Benjamin avaient résolu. | 19 And Abner also spake in the ears of Benjamin: and Abner went also to speak in the ears of David in Hebron all that seemed good to Israel, and that seemed good to the whole house of Benjamin. |
| 20 Il y arriva accompagné de vingt hommes. David lui fit un festin, et à ceux qui étaient venus avec lui. | 20 So Abner came to David to Hebron, and twenty men with him. And David made Abner and the men that were with him a feast. |
| 21 Alors Abner dit à David : Je vais assembler tout Israël, afin qu'il reconnaisse mon seigneur et mon roi, et je ferai alliance avec vous, afin que vous régniez sur tous, comme vous le désirez. Après que David eut congédié Abner, et que celui-ci s'en fut allé en paix, | 21 And Abner said unto David, I will arise and go, and will gather all Israel unto my lord the king, that they may make a league with thee, and that thou mayest reign over all that thine heart desireth. And David sent Abner away; and he went in peace. |
| 22 les gens de David arrivèrent aussitôt avec Joab, revenant de tailler en pièces des brigands, et en apportant un grand butin. Abner n'était plus à Hébron avec David, parce qu'il avait déjà pris congé de lui, et s'en était retourné, | 22 And, Behold, the servants of David and Joab came from pursuing a troop, and brought in a great spoil with them: but Abner was not with David in Hebron; for he had sent him away, and he was gone in peace. |
| 23 lorsque Joab arriva avec toute son armée. On fit donc ce rapport à Joab: Abner, fils de Ner, est venu auprès du roi, qui l'a congédié, et il s'en est allé en paix. | 23 When Joab and all the host that was with him were come, they told Joab, saying, Abner the son of Ner came to the king, and he hath sent him away, and he is gone in peace. |
| 24 Et Joab alla trouver le roi, et lui dit: Qu'avez-vous fait? Voici qu'Abner est venu auprès de vous; pourquoi l'avez-vous renvoyé, et l'avez-vous laissé aller? | 24 Then Joab came to the king, and said, What hast thou done? behold, Abner came unto thee; why is it that thou hast sent him away, and he is quite gone? |
| 25 Ignorez-vous quel est Abner, fils de Ner, et qu'il n'est venu ici que pour vous tromper, pour reconnaître toutes vos démarches, et pour savoir tout ce que vous faites? | 25 Thou knowest Abner the son of Ner, that he came to deceive thee, and to know thy going out and thy coming in, and to know all that thou doest. |
| 26 Et Joab, après avoir quitté David, envoya des courriers après Abner, et le fit revenir de la citerne de Sira, sans que David le sût. | 26 And when Joab was come out from David, he sent messengers after Abner, which brought him again from the well of Sirah: but David knew it not. |
| 27 Et lorsqu'il fut de retour à Hébron, Joab le tira à l'écart au milieu de la porte pour lui parler traîtreusement, et il le frappa dans l'aine et le tua, pour venger la mort de son frère Asaël. | 27 And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother. |
| 28 Or David ayant appris ce qui s'était passé, s'écria: Je suis innocent à jamais devant le Seigneur, moi et mon royaume, du sang d'Abner, fils de Ner. | 28 And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for ever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner: |
| 29 Que son sang retonbe sur Joab et sur la maison de son père; et qu'ily ait à jamais dans la maison de Joab des gens qui souffrent d'un flux honteux, ou de la lèpre, qui tiennent le fuseau, qui tombent sous l'épée, et qui manquent de pain. | 29 Let it rest on the head of Joab, and on all his father's house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread. |
| 30 Joab et Abisaï, son frère, tuèrent donc Abner, parce qu'il avait tué Asaël, leur frère, à Gabaon, dans le combat. | 30 So Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner, because he had slain their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle. |
| 31 Alors David dit à Joab, et à tout le peuple qui était avec lui: Déchirez vos vêtements, couvrez-vous de sacs, et pleurez aux funérailles d'Abner. Et le roi David marchait derrière le cercueil. | 31 And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. And king David himself followed the bier. |
| 32 Après qu'Abner eut été enseveli à Hébron, le roi éleva la voix et pleura sur son tombeau, et tout le peuple pleura aussi. | 32 And they buried Abner in Hebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept. |
| 33 Et le roi, témoignant son deuil et pleurant, dit ces paroles: Abner n'est point mort comme les lâches ont coutume de mourir. | 33 And the king lamented over Abner, and said, Died Abner as a fool dieth? |
| 34 Vos mains n'ont pas été liées, et vos pieds n'ont pas été chargés de fers; mais vous êtes mort comme les hommes de coeur, qui tombent devant les enfants d'iniquité. Tout le peuple, à ces mots, redoubla ses larmes. | 34 Thy hands were not bound, nor thy feet put into fetters: as a man falleth before wicked men, so fellest thou. And all the people wept again over him. |
| 35 Et tous étant revenus pour manger avec David, tandis qu'il était encore grand jour, David jura et dit: Que Dieu me traite avec toute Sa sévérité, si je prends une bouchée de pain ou quoi que ce soit, avant le coucher du soleil. | 35 And when all the people came to cause David to eat meat while it was yet day, David sware, saying, So do God to me, and more also, if I taste bread, or ought else, till the sun be down. |
| 36 Tout le peuple entendit ces paroles, et tout ce que le roi avait fait lui plut. | 36 And all the people took notice of it, and it pleased them: as whatsoever the king did pleased all the people. |
| 37 Et le peuple et tout Israël furent persuadés ce jour-là, que le roi n'avait eu aucune part à l'assassinat d'Abner, fils de Ner. | 37 For all the people and all Israel understood that day that it was not of the king to slay Abner the son of Ner. |
| 38 Le roi dit aussi à ses serviteurs: Ignorez-vous que c'est un prince et un grand homme qui est mort aujourd'hui dans Israël? | 38 And the king said unto his servants, Know ye not that there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel? |
| 39 Pour moi je ne suis roi que par l'onction, et encore peu affermi; et ces gens, les fils de Sarvia, sont trop violents pour moi. Que le Seigneur traite selon sa malice celui qui fait le mal. | 39 And I am this day weak, though anointed king; and these men the sons of Zeruiah be too hard for me: the LORD shall reward the doer of evil according to his wickedness. |
