| 2 fit venir de Thécua une femme habile, et il lui dit : Faites semblant d'être dans l'affliction; prenez un vêtement de deuil, et ne vous parfumez point, afin que vous paraissiez comme une femme qui pleure un mort depuis longtemps. | 2 he sent to Tekoa and brought from there a gifted woman, to whom he said: "Pretend to be in mourning. Put on mourning apparel and do not anoint yourself with oil, that you may appear to be a woman who has been long in mourning for a departed one. |
| 3 Ensuite vous vous présenterez au roi, et vous lui tiendrez tels et tels discours. Et Joab lui mit dans la bouche les paroles qu'elle devait dire. | 3 Then go to the king and speak to him in this manner." And Joab instructed her what to say. |
| 4 Cette femme de Thécua s'étant donc présentée au roi, se jeta à terre devant lui, se prosterna, et lui dit : O roi, sauvez-moi. | 4 So the woman of Tekoa went to the king and fell prostrate to the ground in homage, saying, "Help, your majesty!" |
| 5 Le roi lui dit : Que demandez-vous? Elle lui répondit : Hélas! je suis une femme veuve; car mon mari est mort. | 5 The king said to her, "What do you want?" She replied: "Alas, I am a widow; my husband is dead. |
| 6 Votre servante avait deux fils, et ils se sont querellés dans les champs, où il n'y avait personne qui pût les séparer; et l'un d'eux a frappé l'autre, et l'a tué. | 6 Your servant had two sons, who quarreled in the field. There being no one to part them, one of them struck his brother and killed him. |
| 7 Et maintenant tous les parents se soulèvent contre votre servante, et disent : Donnez-nous celui qui a tué son frère, afin que nous le fassions périr pour la vie de son frère qu'il a tué, et que nous détruisions l'héritier. Ainsi ils veulent éteindre l'étincelle qui me reste, pour ne laisser à mon mari ni nom ni survivant sur la terre. | 7 Then the whole clan confronted your servant and demanded: 'Give up the one who killed his brother. We must put him to death for the life of his brother whom he has slain; we must extinguish the heir also.' Thus they will quench my remaining hope and leave my husband neither name nor posterity upon the earth." |
| 8 Le roi dit à cette femme : Retournez chez vous; je donnerai des ordres à votre sujet. | 8 The king then said to the woman: "Go home. I will issue a command on your behalf." |
| 9 Elle lui répondit : Seigneur roi, s'il y a en ceci de l'injustice, qu'elle retombe sur moi et sur la maison de mon père; mais que le roi et son trône soit innocent. | 9 The woman of Tekoa answered him, "Let me and my family be to blame, my lord king; you and your throne are innocent." |
| 10 Et le roi dit : Si quelqu'un parle contre vous, amenez-le-moi, et soyez sûre qu'il ne vous troublera plus. | 10 Then the king said, "If anyone says a word to you, have him brought to me, and he shall not touch you again." |
| 11 Elle dit encore : Je vous conjure par le Seigneur votre Dieu d'empêcher que les parents ne s'élèvent l'un après l'autre, pour venger par la mort de mon fils le sang de celui qui a été tué. Le roi lui répondit : Vive le Seigneur! il ne tombera pas à terre un seul cheveu de la tête de votre fils. | 11 But she went on to say, "Please, your majesty, keep in mind the LORD your God, that the avenger of blood may not go too far in destruction and that my son may not be done away with." He replied, "As the LORD lives, not a hair of your son shall fall to the ground." |
| 12 Et la femme ajouta : Permettez à votre servante de dire encore un mot. Parlez, dit le roi. | 12 The woman continued, "Please let your servant say still another word to my lord the king." He replied, "Speak." |
| 13 La femme lui dit : Pourquoi pensez-vous de la sorte à l'égard du peuple de Dieu, et pourquoi le roi a-t-il prononcé cette parole, de manière à pécher en ne rappelant pas son fils qu'il a banni? | 13 So the woman said: "Why, then, do you think of this same kind of thing against the people of God? In pronouncing as he has, the king shows himself guilty, for not bringing back his own banished son. |
| 14 Nous mourons tous, et nous nous écoulons sur la terre comme des eaux qui ne reviennent plus; et Dieu ne veut pas qu'une âme périsse, mais Il diffère l'exécution de Son arrêt, de peur que celui qui a été rejeté ne se perde entièrement. | 14 We must indeed die; we are then like water that is poured out on the ground and cannot be gathered up. Yet, though God does not bring back life, he does take thought how not to banish anyone from him. |
| 15 C'est pourquoi je suis venue dire cette parole à mon seigneur le roi devant le peuple, et votre servante a dit : Je parlerai au roi, pour voir si le roi exaucera en quelque manière la prière de sa servante. | 15 And now, if I have presumed to speak of this matter to your majesty, it is because the people have given me cause to fear. And so your servant thought: 'Let me speak to the king. Perhaps he will grant the petition of his maidservant. |
| 16 Le roi a déjà écouté sa servante, pour la délivrer elle et son fils de la main de tous ceux qui voulaient les exterminer de l'héritage du Seigneur. | 16 For the king must surely consent to free his servant from the grasp of one who would seek to destroy me and my son as well from God's inheritance.'" |
| 17 Permettez donc à votre servante de parler encore, afin que ce que le roi mon seigneur a ordonné, s'exécute comme un sacrifice promis à Dieu. Car le roi mon seigneur est comme un Ange de Dieu, qui n'est touché ni des bénédictions ni des malédictions. C'est pourquoi le Seigneur votre Dieu est avec vous. | 17 And the woman concluded: "Let the word of my lord the king provide a resting place; indeed, my lord the king is like an angel of God, evaluating good and bad. The LORD your God be with you." |
| 18 Alors le roi dit à cette femme : Je vous demande une chose; avouez-moi la vérité. La femme lui répondit : Parlez, mon seigneur le roi. | 18 The king answered the woman, "Now do not conceal from me anything I may ask you!" The woman said, "Let my lord the king speak." |
| 19 Et le roi dit : La main de Joab n'est-elle pas en tout cela? La femme répondit : Mon seigneur le roi, je vous jure par votre vie, que Dieu conserve, que rien n'est plus véritable que ce que vous dites; car c'est votre serviteur Joab qui m'a donné cet ordre, et qui a mis dans la bouche de votre servante tout ce que je viens de dire. | 19 So the king asked, "Is Joab involved with you in all this?" And the woman answered: "As you live, my lord the king, it is just as your majesty has said, and not otherwise. It was your servant Joab who instructed me and told your servant all these things she was to say. |
| 20 C'est lui qui m'a commandé de vous parler ainsi en parabole. Mais vous, monseigneur le roi, vous êtes sage comme l'est un Ange de Dieu, et vous pénétrez tout ce qui se fait sur la terre. | 20 Your servant Joab did this to come at the issue in a roundabout way. But my lord is as wise as an angel of God, so that he knows all things on earth." |
| 21 Le roi dit donc à Joab : Je vous accorde la grâce que vous me demandez; allez, et faites revenir mon fils Absalom. | 21 Then the king said to Joab: "I hereby grant this request. Go, therefore, and bring back young Absalom." |
| 22 Alors Joab, tombant le visage contre terre, se prosterna, bénit le roi, et lui dit : Monseigneur le roi, votre serviteur reconnaît aujourd'hui qu'il a trouvé grâce devant vous; car vous avez accompli sa parole. | 22 Falling prostrate to the ground in homage and blessing the king, Joab said, "This day I know that I am in good favor with you, my lord the king, since the king has granted the request of his servant." |
| 23 Joab partit donc, et s'en alla à Gessur, d'où il amena Absalom à Jérusalem. | 23 Joab then went off to Geshur and brought Absalom to Jerusalem. |
| 24 Mais le roi dit : Qu'il retourne dans sa maison, mais il ne me verra point. Absalom revint donc dans sa maison, et il ne vit point le roi. | 24 But the king said, "Let him go to his own house; he shall not appear before me." So Absalom went off to his house and did not appear before the king. |
| 25 Or il n'y avait pas d'homme dans tout Israël qui fût si bien fait ni si beau qu'Absalom; depuis la plante des pieds jusqu'à la tête il n'y avait pas en lui le moindre défaut. | 25 In all Israel there was not a man who could so be praised for his beauty as Absalom, who was without blemish from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head. |
| 26 Lorsqu'il se rasait la tête, ce qu'il faisait une fois tous les ans, parce que sa chevelure lui pesait, le poids de ses cheveux était de deux cents sicles, selon le poids ordinaire. | 26 When he shaved his head--which he used to do at the end of every year, because his hair became too heavy for him--the hair weighed two hundred shekels according to the royal standard. |
| 27 Il avait trois fils, et une fille appelée Thamar, qui était très belle. | 27 Absalom had three sons born to him, besides a daughter named Tamar, who was a beautiful woman. |
| 28 Absalom demeura deux ans à Jérusalem, sans voir le roi. | 28 Absalom lived in Jerusalem for two years without appearing before the king. |
| 29 Ensuite il manda Joab pour l'envoyer vers David. Mais Joab ne voulut pas venir chez lui. Après qu'il l'eut mandé une seconde fois, Joab ayant encore refusé de venir, | 29 Then he summoned Joab to send him to the king, but Joab would not come to him. Although he summoned him a second time, Joab refused to come. |
| 30 il dit à ses serviteurs : Vous savez que Joab a un champ d'orge qui est auprès du mien; allez donc, et mettez-y le feu. Ses gens brûlèrent donc l'orge de Joab. Les serviteurs de Joab vinrent alors trouver leur maître, après avoir déchiré leurs vêtements, et ils lui dirent : Les serviteurs d'Absalom ont brûlé une partie de votre champ. | 30 He therefore instructed his servants: "You see Joab's field that borders mine, on which he has barley. Go, set it on fire." And so Absalom's servants set the field on fire. Joab's farmhands came to him with torn garments and reported to him what had been done. |
| 31 Joab alla donc trouver Absalom dans sa maison, et lui dit : Pourquoi vos gens ont-ils mis le feu à ma moisson? | 31 At this, Joab went to Absalom in his house and asked him, "Why have your servants set my field on fire?" |
| 32 Absalom répondit à Joab : Je vous ai fait prier de venir me voir, afin de vous envoyer vers le roi pour lui dire de ma part : Pourquoi suis-je revenu de Gessur? Il vaudrait mieux que j'y fusse encore. Je demande donc la grâce de voir le roi; que s'il se souvient encore de ma faute, qu'il me fasse mourir. | 32 Absalom answered Joab: "I was summoning you to come here, that I may send you to the king to say: 'Why did I come back from Geshur? I would be better off if I were still there!' Now, let me appear before the king. If I am guilty, let him put me to death." |
| 33 Joab étant allé trouver le roi, lui rapporta toutes ces choses. Absalom fut alors appelé; il se présenta devant le roi, et se prosterna jusqu'à terre devant lui, et le roi le baisa. | 33 Joab went to the king and reported this. The king then called Absalom, who came to him and in homage fell on his face to the ground before the king. Then the king kissed him. |
