| 1 Après cela, Jacob entendit les enfants de Laban qui s'entredisaient: Jacob a enlevé tout ce qui était à notre père, et il est devenu puissant en s'enrichissant de son bien. | 1 And he heard the words of Laban's sons, saying, Jacob hath taken away all that was our father's; and of that which was our father's hath he gotten all this glory. |
| 2 Il remarqua aussi que Laban ne le regardait pas du même oeil qu'auparavant; | 2 And Jacob beheld the countenance of Laban, and, behold, it was not toward him as before. |
| 3 Et de plus, le Seigneur même lui dit: Retournez au pays de vos pères et vers votre famille, et Je serai avec vous. | 3 And the LORD said unto Jacob, Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with thee. |
| 4 Il envoya donc chercher Rachel et Lia, et les fit venir dans le champ où il faisait paître ses troupeaux; | 4 And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field unto his flock, |
| 5 Et il leur dit: Je vois que votre père ne me regarde plus du même oeil qu'autrefois; cependant le Dieu de mon père a été avec moi. | 5 And said unto them, I see your father's countenance, that it is not toward me as before; but the God of my father hath been with me. |
| 6 Et vous savez vous-mêmes que j'ai servi votre père de toutes mes forces. | 6 And ye know that with all my power I have served your father. |
| 7 Il a même usé envers moi de tromperie, en changeant dix fois ce que je devais avoir pour récompense, quoique Dieu ne lui ait pas permis de me faire tort. | 7 And your father hath deceived me, and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me. |
| 8 Lorsqu'il a dit: Les agneaux tachetés seront ton salaire, toutes les brebis ont eu des agneaux tachetés. Et lorsqu'il a dit, au contraire: Tout ce qui sera blanc sera ton salaire, tout ce qui est né des troupeaux a été blanc. | 8 If he said thus, The speckled shall be thy wages; then all the cattle bare speckled: and if he said thus, The ringstraked shall be thy hire; then bare all the cattle ringstraked. |
| 9 Ainsi Dieu a ôté le bien de votre père pour me le donner. | 9 Thus God hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to me. |
| 10 Car le temps où les brebis devaient concevoir étant venu, j'ai levé les yeux et j'ai vu en songe que les mâles qui couvraient les femelles etaient marquetés et tachetés de diverses couleurs. | 10 And it came to pass at the time that the cattle conceived, that I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the rams which leaped upon the cattle were ringstraked, speckled, and grisled. |
| 11 Et l'Ange de Dieu m'a dit en songe: Jacob. Me voici, ai-je répondu. | 11 And the angel of God spake unto me in a dream, saying, Jacob: And I said, Here am I. |
| 12 Et il a ajouté: Levez vos yeux, et voyez que tous les mâles qui couvrent les femelles sont marquetés, tachetés et de couleurs différentes. Car J'ai vu tout ce que Laban vous a fait. | 12 And he said, Lift up now thine eyes, and see, all the rams which leap upon the cattle are ringstraked, speckled, and grisled: for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto thee. |
| 13 Je suis le Dieu de Béthel, où vous avez oint la pierre et où vous M'avez fait un voeu. Sortez donc promptement de cette terre, et retournez au pays de votre naissance. | 13 I am the God of Bethel, where thou anointedst the pillar, and where thou vowedst a vow unto me: now arise, get thee out from this land, and return unto the land of thy kindred. |
| 14 Rachel et Lia lui répondirent: Nous reste-t-il quelque chose du bien et de la part que nous devons avoir dans la maison de notre père? | 14 And Rachel and Leah answered and said unto him, Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our father's house? |
| 15 Ne nous a-t-il pas traitées comme des étrangères? Ne nous a-t-il point vendues, et n'a-t-il pas mangé ce qui nous était dû? | 15 Are we not counted of him strangers? for he hath sold us, and hath quite devoured also our money. |
| 16 Mais Dieu a pris les richesses de notre père, et nous les a données et à nos enfants; c'est pourquoi faites tout ce que Dieu vous a commandé. | 16 For all the riches which God hath taken from our father, that is ours, and our children's: now then, whatsoever God hath said unto thee, do. |
| 17 Jacob fit donc monter aussitôt ses femmes et ses enfants sur des chameaux. | 17 Then Jacob rose up, and set his sons and his wives upon camels; |
| 18 Et emmenant avec lui tout ce qu'il avait, ses troupeaux et tout ce qu'il avait acquis en Mésopotamie, il se mit en chemin pour aller auprès de son père, au pays de Chanaan. | 18 And he carried away all his cattle, and all his goods which he had gotten, the cattle of his getting, which he had gotten in Padan-aram, for to go to Isaac his father in the land of Canaan. |
| 19 Or Laban étant allé en ce temps-là faire tondre ses brebis, Rachel déroba les idoles de son père. | 19 And Laban went to shear his sheep: and Rachel had stolen the images that were her father's. |
| 20 Et Jacob ne voulut point découvrir son projet de fuite à son beau-père. | 20 And Jacob stole away unawares to Laban the Syrian, in that he told him not that he fled. |
| 21 Lors donc qu'il s'en fut allé avec tout ce qui était à lui, comme il avait déjà passé le fleuve et qu'il marchait vers la montagne de Galaad, | 21 So he fled with all that he had; and he rose up, and passed over the river, and set his face toward the mount Gilead. |
| 22 Laban fut averti, le troisième jour, que Jacob s'enfuyait. | 22 And it was told Laban on the third day that Jacob was fled. |
| 23 Et aussitôt, ayant pris avec lui ses frères, il le poursuivit durant sept jours et le joignit à la montagne de Galaad. | 23 And he took his brethren with him, and pursued after him seven days' journey; and they overtook him in the mount Gilead. |
| 24 Mais Dieu lui apparut en songe et lui dit: Prenez garde de ne rien dire d'offensant à Jacob. | 24 And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad. |
| 25 Jacob avait déjà tendu sa tente sur la montagne de Galaad, et Laban, l'y ayant rejoint avec ses frères, y tendit aussi la sienne. | 25 Then Laban overtook Jacob. Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mount: and Laban with his brethren pitched in the mount of Gilead. |
| 26 Et il dit à Jacob: Pourquoi avez-vous agi de la sorte, en m'enlevant ainsi mes filles sans m'en rien dire, comme si c'étaient des prisonnières de guerre? | 26 And Laban said to Jacob, What hast thou done, that thou hast stolen away unawares to me, and carried away my daughters, as captives taken with the sword? |
| 27 Pourquoi avez-vous pris le dessein de vous enfuir sans que je le susse, et ne m'avez-vous point averti? Je vous aurais reconduit avec des chants de joie, au son des tambourins et des harpes? | 27 Wherefore didst thou flee away secretly, and steal away from me; and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with mirth, and with songs, with tabret, and with harp? |
| 28 Vous ne m'avez pas même permis de donner à mes filles et à mes fils le dernier baiser. Vous n'avez pas agi sagement. Et maintenant | 28 And hast not suffered me to kiss my sons and my daughters? thou hast now done foolishly in so doing. |
| 29 Je pourrais bien vous rendre le mal pour le mal; mais le Dieu de votre père me dit hier: Prenez bien garde de ne rien dire d'offensant à Jacob. | 29 It is in the power of my hand to do you hurt: but the God of your father spake unto me yesternight, saying, Take thou heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad. |
| 30 Vous aviez peut-être envie de retourner vers vos proches, et vous souhaitiez de revoir la maison de votre père; mais pourquoi m'avez-vous dérobé mes idoles? | 30 And now, though thou wouldest needs be gone, because thou sore longedst after thy father's house, yet wherefore hast thou stolen my gods? |
| 31 Jacob lui répondit: Ce qui m'a fait partir sans vous en avoir averti, c'est que j'ai eu peur que vous ne me voulussiez ravir vos filles par violence. | 31 And Jacob answered and said to Laban, Because I was afraid: for I said, Peradventure thou wouldest take by force thy daughters from me. |
| 32 Mais pour le larcin dont vous m'accusez, je consens que quiconque sera trouvé avoir pris vos idoles soit puni de mort en présence de nos frères. Cherchez partout, et emportez tout ce que vous trouverez à vous ici. En disant cela, il ne savait pas que Rachel avait dérobé ses idoles. | 32 With whomsoever thou findest thy gods, let him not live: before our brethren discern thou what is thine with me, and take it to thee. For Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen them. |
| 33 Laban étant donc entré dans la tente de Jacob, de Lia et des deux servantes, ne trouva point ce qu'il cherchait. Il entra ensuite dans la tente de Rachel; | 33 And Laban went into Jacob's tent, and into Leah's tent, and into the two maidservants' tents; but he found them not. Then went he out of Leah's tent, and entered into Rachel's tent. |
| 34 Mais elle, ayant caché promptement les idoles sous la litière d'un chameau, s'assit dessus; et lorsqu'il cherchait partout dans la tente de Rachel; | 34 Now Rachel had taken the images, and put them in the camel's furniture, and sat upon them. And Laban searched all the tent, but found them not. |
| 35 Elle lui dit: Que mon seigneur ne se fâche pas si je ne puis me lever maintenant devant lui, parce que le mal qui est ordinaire aux femmes vient de me prendre. Ainsi Rachel rendit inutile cette recherche qu'il faisait avec tant de soin. | 35 And she said to her father, Let it not displease my lord that I cannot rise up before thee; for the custom of women is upon me. And he searched, but found not the images. |
| 36 Alors Jacob, tout ému, fit ce reproche à Laban: Quelle faute avais-je commise, et en quoi vous avais-je offensé, pour vous obliger de courir après moi avec tant de chaleur, | 36 And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban: and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What is my trespass? what is my sin, that thou hast so hotly pursued after me? |
| 37 Et de fouiller tout ce qui est à moi? Qu'avez-vous trouvé ici de toutes les choses qui étaient de votre maison? Faites-le voir devant mes frères et devant les vôtres, et qu'ils soient juges entre vous et moi. | 37 Whereas thou hast searched all my stuff, what hast thou found of all thy household stuff? set it here before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge betwixt us both. |
| 38 Est-ce donc pour cela que j'ai passé vingt années avec vous? Vos brebis et vos chèvres n'ont point été stériles; je n'ai point mangé les moutons de votre troupeau; | 38 This twenty years have I been with thee; thy ewes and thy she goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flock have I not eaten. |
| 39 Je ne vous ai rien montré de ce qui avait été pris par les bêtes: je prenais sur moi tout ce qui avait été perdu et vous en tenais compte, et vous exigiez de moi tout ce qui avait été dérobé; | 39 That which was torn of beasts I brought not unto thee; I bare the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day, or stolen by night. |
| 40 J'étais brûlé par la chaleur pendant le jour et par le froid pendant la nuit, et le sommeil fuyait de mes yeux. | 40 Thus I was; in the day the drought consumed me, and the frost by night; and my sleep departed from mine eyes. |
| 41 Je vous ai servi ainsi dans votre maison vingt ans durant, quatorze pour vos filles et six pour vos troupeaux. Vous avez changé dix fois ce que je devais avoir pour récompense. | 41 Thus have I been twenty years in thy house; I served thee fourteen years for thy two daughters, and six years for thy cattle: and thou hast changed my wages ten times. |
| 42 Si le Dieu de mon père Abraham, et le Dieu que craint Isaac, ne m'eût assisté, vous m'auriez peut-être renvoyé tout nu de chez vous. Mais Dieu a regardé mon affliction et le travail de mes mains, et Il vous a arrêté cette nuit par Ses menaces. | 42 Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the fear of Isaac, had been with me, surely thou hadst sent me away now empty. God hath seen mine affliction and the labour of my hands, and rebuked thee yesternight. |
| 43 Laban lui répondit: Mes filles et mes petits-fils, vos troupeaux et tout ce que vous voyez est à moi. Que puis-je faire à mes filles et à mes petits-fils? | 43 And Laban answered and said unto Jacob, These daughters are my daughters, and these children are my children, and these cattle are my cattle, and all that thou seest is mine: and what can I do this day unto these my daughters, or unto their children which they have born? |
| 44 Venez donc, et faisons une alliance qui serve de témoignage entre vous et moi. | 44 Now therefore come thou, let us make a covenant, I and thou; and let it be for a witness between me and thee. |
| 45 Alors Jacob prit une pierre, et, en ayant dressé un monument, | 45 And Jacob took a stone, and set it up for a pillar. |
| 46 Il dit a ses frères: Apportez des pierres; et en ayant ramassé plusieurs ensemble, ils en firent un lieu élevé et mangèrent dessus. | 46 And Jacob said unto his brethren, Gather stones; and they took stones, and made an heap: and they did eat there upon the heap. |
| 47 Laban le nomma le Monceau du témoin, et Jacob le Monceau du témoignage, chacun selon la propriété de sa langue. | 47 And Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha: but Jacob called it Galeed. |
| 48 Et Laban dit: Ce monument sera témoin aujourd'hui entre vous et moi; c'est pourquoi il a été nommé Galaad, c'est-à-dire le Monceau du témoin. | 48 And Laban said, This heap is a witness between me and thee this day. Therefore was the name of it called Galeed; |
| 49 Que le Seigneur nous regarde et nous juge, lorsque nous nous serons retirés l'un de l'autre. | 49 And Mizpah; for he said, The LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another. |
| 50 Si vous maltraitez mes filles, et si vous prenez encore d'autres femmes qu'elles, nul n'est témoin de nos paroles que Dieu, qui est présent et qui nous regarde. | 50 If thou shalt afflict my daughters, or if thou shalt take other wives beside my daughters, no man is with us; see, God is witness betwixt me and thee. |
| 51 Il dit encore à Jacob: Ce monument, et cette pierre que j'ai dressée entre vous et moi | 51 And Laban said to Jacob, Behold this heap, and behold this pillar, which I have cast betwixt me and thee; |
| 52 Nous serviront de témoin; ce monument, dis-je, et cette pierre porteront témoignage si je passe au delà pour aller à vous, ou si vous passez vous-même dans le dessein de me venir me faire quelque mal. | 52 This heap be witness, and this pillar be witness, that I will not pass over this heap to thee, and that thou shalt not pass over this heap and this pillar unto me, for harm. |
| 53 Que le Dieu d'Abraham, le Dieu de Nachor et le Dieu de leur père soit notre juge. Jacob jura donc par le Dieu que craignait Isaac; | 53 The God of Abraham, and the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us. And Jacob sware by the fear of his father Isaac. |
| 54 Et après avoir immolé des victimes sur la montagne, il invita ses parents pour manger ensemble; et, ayant mangé, ils demeurèrent là pour y passer la nuit. | 54 Then Jacob offered sacrifice upon the mount, and called his brethren to eat bread: and they did eat bread, and tarried all night in the mount. |
| 55 Mais Laban, se levant avant qu'il fît jour, embrassa ses fils et ses filles, les bénit et s'en retourna chez lui. | 55 And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, and returned unto his place. |
