| 2 Et elle conçut et enfanta un fils en sa vieillesse, au temps même que Dieu lui avait prédit. | 2 Sarah conceived and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the time God had promised. |
| 3 Abraham donna le nom d'Isaac à son fils qui lui était né de Sara; | 3 Abraham named the son born to him Isaac, the son to whom Sarah had given birth. |
| 4 Et il le circoncit le huitième jour, selon le commandement qu'il en avait reçu de Dieu, | 4 Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. |
| 5 Ayant alors cent ans; car ce fut à cet âge-là qu'il devint père d'Isaac. | 5 Abraham was a hundred years old when his son Isaac was born to him. |
| 6 Et Sara dit alors: Dieu m'a donné un sujet de ris et de joie; quiconque l'apprendra en rira avec moi. | 6 Sarah said: God has given me cause to laugh! Al who hear about this wil laugh with me! |
| 7 Et elle ajouta: Qui croirait qu'on aurait jamais pu dire à Abraham que Sara nourrirait de son lait un fils, qu'elle lui aurait enfanté lorsqu'il serait déjà vieux? | 7 She added: Whoever would have told Abraham that Sarah would nurse children! Yet I have borne ason in his old age. |
| 8 Cependant l'enfant crût, et on le sevra; et Abraham fit un grand festin au jour qu'il fut sevré. | 8 The child grew and was weaned, and Abraham gave a great banquet on the day Isaac was weaned. |
| 9 Mais ayant vu le fils d'Agar l'Egyptienne, qui jouait avec Isaac son fils, elle dit à Abraham: | 9 Now Sarah watched the son that Hagar the Egyptian had borne to Abraham, playing with her sonIsaac. |
| 10 Chassez cette servante avec son fils; car le fils de cette servante ne sera point héritier avec mon fils Isaac. | 10 'Drive away that slave-girl and her son,' she said to Abraham, 'this slave-girl's son is not to share theinheritance with my son Isaac.' |
| 11 Ce discours parut dur à Abraham, à cause de son fils Ismaël. | 11 This greatly distressed Abraham, because the slave-girl's child too was his son, |
| 12 Mais Dieu lui dit: Que ce que Sara vous a dit touchant votre fils et votre servante ne vous paraisse point trop rude. Faites tout ce qu'elle vous dira, parce que c'est d'Isaac que sortira la race qui doit porter votre nom. | 12 but God said to him, 'Do not distress yourself on account of the boy and your slave-girl. Do whateverSarah says, for Isaac is the one through whom your name wil be carried on. |
| 13 Je ne laisserai pas, néanmoins, de rendre le fils de votre servante chef d'un grand peuple, parce qu'il est sorti de vous. | 13 But the slave-girl's son I shal also make into a great nation, for he too is your child.' |
| 14 Abraham se leva donc dès le point du jour, prit du pain et une outre pleine d'eau, qu'il mit sur l'épaule d'Agar, et il lui donna son fils, et la renvoya. Elle, étant sortie, errait dans la solitude de Bersabée. | 14 Early next morning, Abraham took some bread and a skin of water and, giving them to Hagar, putthe child on her shoulder and sent her away. She wandered off into the desert of Beersheba. |
| 15 Et l'eau qui était dans l'outre ayant manqué, elle laissa son fils couché sous un des arbres qui était là, | 15 When the skin of water was finished she abandoned the child under a bush. |
| 16 S'éloigna de lui d'un trait d'arc, et s'assit vis-à-vis, en disant: Je ne verrai point mourir mon enfant; et élevant sa voix dans le lieu où elle se tint assise, elle se mit à pleurer. | 16 Then she went and sat down at a distance, about a bowshot away, thinking, 'I cannot bear to see thechild die.' Sitting at a distance, she began to sob. |
| 17 Or Dieu écouta la voix de l'enfant; et un Ange de Dieu appela Agar du Ciel, et lui dit: Agar, que faites-vous là? Ne craignez point; car Dieu a écouté la voix de l'enfant du lieu où Il est. | 17 God heard the boy crying, and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven. 'What is wrong,Hagar?' he asked. 'Do not be afraid, for God has heard the boy's cry in his plight. |
| 18 Levez-vous, prenez l'enfant, et tenez-le par la main; car Je le rendrai chef d'un grand peuple. | 18 Go and pick the boy up and hold him safe, for I shal make him into a great nation.' |
| 19 En même temps Dieu lui ouvrit les yeux; et ayant aperçu un puits plein d'eau, elle y alla; elle y remplit son outre, et elle donna à boire à l'enfant. | 19 Then God opened Hagar's eyes and she saw a well, so she went and fil ed the skin with water andgave the boy a drink. |
| 20 Et elle demeura avec l'enfant, qui crût et demeura dans les déserts, et qui devint un jeune homme adroit à tirer de l'arc. | 20 God was with the boy. He grew up and made his home in the desert, and he became an archer. |
| 21 Il habita dans le désert de Pharan, et sa mère lui fit épouser une femme du pays d'Egypte. | 21 He made his home in the desert of Paran, and his mother got him a wife from Egypt. |
| 22 En ce même temps, Abimélech, accompagné de Phicol, qui commandait son armée, vint dire à Abraham: Dieu est avec vous dans tout ce que vous faites. | 22 About then, Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army, said to Abraham, 'Since God is withyou in everything you do, |
| 23 Jurez-moi donc par le nom de Dieu, que vous ne me ferez point de mal, ni à moi, ni à mes enfants, ni à ma race; mais que vous me traiterez, et ce pays dans lequel vous avez demeuré comme étranger, avec la bonté avec laquelle je vous ai traité. | 23 swear to me by God, here and now, that you wil not act treacherously towards me or my kith andkin, but behave with the same faithful love to me and the land of which you are a guest as I have behaved toyou.' |
| 24 Abraham lui répondit: Je vous le jurerai. | 24 'Yes,' Abraham replied, 'I swear it.' |
| 25 Et il fit ses plaintes à Abimelech, de la violence avec laquelle quelques-uns de ses serviteurs lui avaient enlevé un puits. | 25 Abraham then reproached Abimelech about a well that Abimelech's servants had seized. |
| 26 Abimélech lui répondit: Je n'ai point su qui vous a fait cette injustice; vous ne m'en avez point vous-même averti, et jusqu'à ce jour je n'en ai jamais ouï parler. | 26 'I do not know who has done this,' Abimelech said. 'You yourself have never mentioned it to me and,for myself, I heard nothing of it til today.' |
| 27 Abraham donna donc à Abimélech des brebis et des boeufs, et ils firent alliance ensemble. | 27 Abraham then took sheep and cattle and presented them to Abimelech, and the two of them made acovenant. |
| 28 Et Abraham ayant mis à part sept jeunes brebis qu'il avait tirées de son troupeau, | 28 Abraham put seven lambs of the flock on one side. |
| 29 Abimélech lui demanda: Que veulent dire ces sept jeunes brebis que vous avez mises ainsi à part?a | 29 'Why have you put these seven lambs on one side?' Abimelech asked Abraham. |
| 30 Vous recevrez, dit Abraham, ces sept jeunes brebis de ma main, afin qu'elles me servent de témoignage que c'est moi qui ai creusé ce puits. | 30 He replied, 'You must accept these seven lambs from me as evidence that I have dug this wel .' |
| 31 C'est pourquoi ce lieu fut appelé Bersabée, parce qu'ils avaient juré là tous deux. | 31 This was why the place was cal ed Beersheba: because there the two of them swore an oath. |
| 32 Et ils firent alliance auprès du puits du serment. | 32 After they had made a covenant at Beersheba, Abimelech and Phicol, the commander of his army,left and went back to Philistine territory. |
| 33 Abimélech s'en alla ensuite avec Phicol, général de son armée; et ils retournèrent dans le pays des Philistins. Mais Abraham planta un bois à Bersabée, et il invoqua en ce lieu-là le nom du Seigneur, le Dieu éternel. | 33 And Abraham planted a tamarisk at Beersheba and there he invoked the name of Yahweh. |
| 34 Et il demeura longtemps au pays des Philistins. | 34 Abraham stayed for a long while in Philistine territory. |
