| 5 Et aucun arbrisseau des champs n'était encore sorti de la terre, et aucune herbe de la campagne n'avait encore poussé; car le Seigneur Dieu n'avait point encore fait pleuvoir sur la terre, et il n'y avait point d'homme pour la cultiver. | 5 there was as yet no wild bush on the earth nor had any wild plant yet sprung up, for Yahweh God hadnot sent rain on the earth, nor was there any man to til the soil. |
| 6 Mais il s'élevait de la terre une fontaine qui en arrosait toute la surface. | 6 Instead, water flowed out of the ground and watered al the surface of the soil. |
| 7 Le Seigneur Dieu forma donc l'homme du limon de la terre; Il souffla sur son visage un souffle de vie, et l'homme devint vivant et animé. | 7 Yahweh God shaped man from the soil of the ground and blew the breath of life into his nostrils, andman became a living being. |

| 9 Le Seigneur Dieu avait aussi produit de la terre toutes sortes d'arbres beaux à la vue, et dont le fruit était agréable au goût; et l'arbre de vie au milieu du paradis, avec l'arbre de la science du bien et du mal. | 9 From the soil, Yahweh God caused to grow every kind of tree, enticing to look at and good to eat, withthe tree of life in the middle of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. |
| 10 De ce lieu de délices il sortait, pour arroser le paradis, un fleuve qui de là se divise en quatre branches. | 10 A river flowed from Eden to water the garden, and from there it divided to make four streams. |
| 11 L'un s'appelle Phison, et c'est celui qui court tout autour du pays de Hévilath, où il vient de l'or. | 11 The first is named the Pishon, and this winds al through the land of Havilah where there is gold. |
| 12 Et l'or de cette terre est très bon. C'est là aussi que se trouve le bdellion et la pierre d'onyx. | 12 The gold of this country is pure; bdel ium and cornelian stone are found there. |
| 13 Le second fleuve s'appelle Géhon, et c'est celui qui coule tout autour du pays d'Ethiopie. | 13 The second river is named the Gihon, and this winds all through the land of Cush. |
| 14 Le troisième fleuve s'appelle le Tigre, qui se répand vers les Assyriens. Et l'Euphrate est le quatrième de ces fleuves. | 14 The third river is named the Tigris, and this flows to the east of Ashur. The fourth river is theEuphrates. |
| 15 Le Seigneur Dieu prit donc l'homme, et le mit dans le paradis de délices, afin qu'il le cultivât et qu'il le gardât. | 15 Yahweh God took the man and settled him in the garden of Eden to cultivate and take care of it. |
| 16 Il lui fit aussi ce commandement, et lui dit: Mangez de tous les fruits des arbres du paradis. | 16 Then Yahweh God gave the man this command, 'You are free to eat of al the trees in the garden. |
| 17 Mais ne mangez point du fruit de l'abre de la science du bien et du mal. Car au même temps que vous en mangerez, vous mourrez très certainement. | 17 But of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you are not to eat; for, the day you eat of that, youare doomed to die.' |
| 18 Le Seigneur Dieu dit aussi: Il n'est pas bon que l'homme soit seul; faisons-lui une aide semblable à lui. | 18 Yahweh God said, 'It is not right that the man should be alone. I shal make him a helper.' |
| 19 Le Seigneur Dieu ayant donc formé de la terre tous les animaux terrestres et tous les oiseaux du ciel, il les amena devant Adam, afin qu'il vît comment il les appellerait. Et le nom qu'Adam donna à chacun des animaux est son nom véritable. | 19 So from the soil Yahweh God fashioned al the wild animals and al the birds of heaven. These hebrought to the man to see what he would call them; each one was to bear the name the man would give it. |
| 20 Adam appela tous les animaux d'un nom qui leur était propre, tant les oiseaux du ciel que les bêtes de la terre. Mais il ne se trouvait point d'aide pour Adam qui lui fût semblable. | 20 The man gave names to al the cattle, al the birds of heaven and all the wild animals. But no helpersuitable for the man was found for him. |
| 21 Le Seigneur Dieu envoya donc à Adam un profond sommeil; et lorsqu'il était endormi, Il tira une de ses côtes, et mit de la chair à la place. | 21 Then, Yahweh God made the man fal into a deep sleep. And, while he was asleep, he took one of hisribs and closed the flesh up again forthwith. |
| 22 Et le Seigneur Dieu forma la femme de la côte qu'il avait tirée d'Adam, et il l'amena à Adam. | 22 Yahweh God fashioned the rib he had taken from the man into a woman, and brought her to the man. |
| 23 Alors Adam dit: Voilà maintenant l'os de mes os, et la chair de ma chair. Celle-ci s'appellera d'un nom qui marque l'homme, parce qu'elle a été prise de l'homme. | 23 And the man said: This one at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh! | 25 Or Adam et sa femme étaient nus tous deux, et ils ne rougissaient point. | 25 Now, both of them were naked, the man and his wife, but they felt no shame before each other. |
