| 1 Après Abimélek, Tola, fils de Poua, fils de Dodo, se leva pour délivrer Israël. Il était de la tribu d’Issacar et il habitait Chamir, dans la montagne d’Éphraïm. | 1 After Abimelech there arose to deliver Israel Tola the son of Puah, son of Dodo, a man of Issachar; and he lived at Shamir in the hill country of Ephraim. |
| 2 Il jugea Israël pendant 23 ans, puis il mourut et on l’enterra à Chamir. | 2 And he judged Israel twenty-three years. Then he died, and was buried at Shamir. |
| 3 Après lui, se leva Yaïr de Galaad. Il jugea Israël pendant 22 ans. | 3 After him arose Jair the Gileadite, who judged Israel twenty-two years. |
| 4 Il avait 30 fils qui montaient 30 ânons, et il possédait 30 villes qu’on appelle encore aujourd’hui les Douars-de-Yaïr, au pays de Galaad. | 4 And he had thirty sons who rode on thirty asses; and they had thirty cities, called Havvoth-jair to this day, which are in the land of Gilead. |
| 5 Quand Yaïr mourut, on l’enterra à Kamon. | 5 And Jair died, and was buried in Kamon. |
| 6 Les Israélites firent de nouveau ce qui est mal aux yeux de Yahvé. Ils servirent les Baals et les Astartés, ainsi que les dieux d’Aram, de Sidon, de Moab, des Ammonites et des Philistins. Ils abandonnèrent Yahvé et ne le servirent plus. | 6 And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the LORD, and served the Baals and the Ashtaroth, the gods of Syria, the gods of Sidon, the gods of Moab, the gods of the Ammonites, and the gods of the Philistines; and they forsook the LORD, and did not serve him. |
| 7 C’est pourquoi la colère de Yahvé s’enflamma contre Israël, il le livra aux mains des Philistins et des Ammonites. | 7 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel, and he sold them into the hand of the Philistines and into the hand of the Ammonites, |
| 8 Dès cette année-là ils écrasèrent et maltraitèrent tous les Israélites qui habitaient au-delà du Jourdain, dans le pays amorite, en Galaad, et cela dura 18 ans. | 8 and they crushed and oppressed the children of Israel that year. For eighteen years they oppressed all the people of Israel that were beyond the Jordan in the land of the Amorites, which is in Gilead. |
| 9 Les Ammonites passèrent même le Jourdain pour combattre contre Juda, Benjamin et la maison d’Éphraïm: Israël était dans une très grande détresse. | 9 And the Ammonites crossed the Jordan to fight also against Judah and against Benjamin and against the house of Ephraim; so that Israel was sorely distressed. |
| 10 Les Israélites crièrent donc vers Yahvé: “Nous avons péché contre toi, lui dirent-ils, nous avons abandonné notre Dieu et nous avons servi les Baals.” | 10 And the people of Israel cried to the LORD, saying, "We have sinned against thee, because we have forsaken our God and have served the Baals." |
| 11 Yahvé répondit aux Israélites: “Quand vous avez été opprimés par les Égyptiens, les Amorites, les Ammonites, les Philistins, | 11 And the LORD said to the people of Israel, "Did I not deliver you from the Egyptians and from the Amorites, from the Ammonites and from the Philistines? |
| 12 les Sidoniens, les Amalécites ou les Madianites, et que vous avez crié vers moi, ne vous ai-je pas délivré de leurs mains? | 12 The Sidonians also, and the Amalekites, and the Maonites, oppressed you; and you cried to me, and I delivered you out of their hand. |
| 13 Mais vous, vous m’avez abandonné et vous avez servi d’autres dieux, c’est pourquoi je ne vous délivrerai plus. | 13 Yet you have forsaken me and served other gods; therefore I will deliver you no more. |
| 14 Allez maintenant crier vers les dieux que vous avez choisis, qu’ils vous délivrent quand les choses vont mal pour vous!” | 14 Go and cry to the gods whom you have chosen; let them deliver you in the time of your distress." |
| 15 Les Israélites dirent à Yahvé: “Nous avons péché, traite-nous comme il te semblera bon, mais au moins délivre-nous en ce jour.” | 15 And the people of Israel said to the LORD, "We have sinned; do to us whatever seems good to thee; only deliver us, we pray thee, this day." |
| 16 Ils firent disparaître de chez eux les dieux étrangers et ils servirent Yahvé. Alors Yahvé ne supporta pas davantage la souffrance d’Israël. | 16 So they put away the foreign gods from among them and served the LORD; and he became indignant over the misery of Israel. |
| 17 Les Ammonites se rassemblèrent et installèrent leur camp en Galaad. Les Israélites se rassemblèrent aussi, et ils installèrent leur camp à Mispa. | 17 Then the Ammonites were called to arms, and they encamped in Gilead; and the people of Israel came together, and they encamped at Mizpah. |
| 18 Le peuple et les chefs de Galaad se dirent les uns aux autres: “Quel est l’homme qui engagera le combat contre les Ammonites? On le placera à la tête de tous les habitants de Galaad.” | 18 And the people, the leaders of Gilead, said one to another, "Who is the man that will begin to fight against the Ammonites? He shall be head over all the inhabitants of Gilead." |
