| 1 Après la mort de Moïse, Yahvé parla à Josué, fils de Noun, l’adjoint de Moïse. Il lui dit: | 1 After the death of Moses the servant of the LORD, the LORD said to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses' minister, |
| 2 “Moïse, mon serviteur, est mort. Toi, maintenant, traverse avec tout le peuple le Jourdain, et passe au pays que je donne aux Israélites. | 2 "Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land which I am giving to them, to the people of Israel. |
| 3 Comme je l’ai dit à Moïse, je vous donne tout endroit que foulera ton pied, | 3 Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, as I promised to Moses. |
| 4 c’est à dire depuis ce désert jusqu’au Grand Fleuve, le fleuve de l’Euphrate. Tout le pays des Hittites jusqu’à la Grande Mer du côté du soleil couchant, sera votre territoire. | 4 From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun shall be your territory. |
| 5 “Aussi longtemps que tu vivras, personne ne pourra te résister. Je serai avec toi comme j’ai été avec Moïse, je ne t’oublierai pas et je ne t’abandonnerai pas. | 5 No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life; as I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you. |
| 6 Sois fort et sois courageux! C’est toi qui mettras ce peuple en possession du pays que j’ai juré à leurs pères de leur donner. | 6 Be strong and of good courage; for you shall cause this people to inherit the land which I swore to their fathers to give them. |
| 7 Oui, sois fort et courageux! Veille à observer en tout point cette Loi que mon serviteur Moïse t’a donnée. Ne t’en écarte ni à droite ni à gauche, et tu réussiras partout où tu iras. | 7 Only be strong and very courageous, being careful to do according to all the law which Moses my servant commanded you; turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that you may have good success wherever you go. |
| 8 “Tu reliras constamment ce livre de la Loi. Jour et nuit tu le méditeras afin d’agir en toutes choses selon ce qui y est écrit: ainsi tu mèneras à bien tes entreprises et tu réussiras. | 8 This book of the law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall have good success. |
| 9 Je t’ai bien donné cet ordre: Sois fort et courageux, ne tremble pas et n’aie pas peur; Yahvé ton Dieu est avec toi partout où tu iras.” | 9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; be not frightened, neither be dismayed; for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." |
| 10 Josué donna cet ordre aux scribes du peuple: | 10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, |
| 11 “Circulez à travers le camp et donnez au peuple ces instructions: Préparez-vous des provisions, car dans trois jours vous traverserez le Jourdain pour aller conquérir le pays que Yahvé votre Dieu vous donne.” | 11 "Pass through the camp, and command the people, 'Prepare your provisions; for within three days you are to pass over this Jordan, to go in to take possession of the land which the LORD your God gives you to possess.'" |
| 12 Josué s’adressa alors à la tribu de Ruben, à celle de Gad et à la demi-tribu de Manassé: | 12 And to the Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh Joshua said, |
| 13 “Souvenez-vous de ce que Moïse, le serviteur de Yahvé, vous a ordonné: Yahvé votre Dieu, a-t-il dit, veut votre repos et vous donne ce pays. | 13 "Remember the word which Moses the servant of the LORD commanded you, saying, 'The LORD your God is providing you a place of rest, and will give you this land.' |
| 14 Aussi, vous allez laisser vos femmes, vos petits enfants, et vos troupeaux dans le pays que Moïse vous a donné de l’autre côté du Jourdain, et vous, vous passerez en armes en avant de vos frères. Vous tous, qui êtes de courageux guerriers, vous les aiderez | 14 Your wives, your little ones, and your cattle shall remain in the land which Moses gave you beyond the Jordan; but all the men of valor among you shall pass over armed before your brethren and shall help them, |
| 15 jusqu’à ce que Yahvé ait donné le repos à vos frères, comme il l’a fait pour vous, le repos, et qu’ils possèdent eux aussi le pays que Yahvé votre Dieu leur donne. Alors seulement vous reviendrez sur les terres qui sont votre part, et elles seront à vous. C’est le pays que vous a donné Moïse, le serviteur de Yahvé, de l’autre côté du Jourdain, du côté du soleil levant.” | 15 until the LORD gives rest to your brethren as well as to you, and they also take possession of the land which the LORD your God is giving them; then you shall return to the land of your possession, and shall possess it, the land which Moses the servant of the LORD gave you beyond the Jordan toward the sunrise." |
| 16 Ils répondirent à Josué: “Nous ferons tout ce que tu nous as commandé et nous irons partout où tu nous enverras. | 16 And they answered Joshua, "All that you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. |
| 17 Nous t’obéirons en toute chose, comme nous avons obéi à Moïse. Oui, puisse Yahvé ton Dieu être avec toi comme il l’a été avec Moïse. | 17 Just as we obeyed Moses in all things, so we will obey you; only may the LORD your God be with you, as he was with Moses! |
| 18 On mettra à mort celui qui ne t’obéira pas et ne tiendra pas compte de ce que tu lui commanderas; quant à toi, sois fort et courageux.” | 18 Whoever rebels against your commandment and disobeys your words, whatever you command him, shall be put to death. Only be strong and of good courage." |
