| 1 Si on trouve dans la campagne, sur le sol que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne en possession, le corps d’une personne assassinée, et qu’on ne sait pas qui l’a frappée, | 1 "If in the land which the LORD your God gives you to possess, any one is found slain, lying in the open country, and it is not known who killed him, |
| 2 les anciens et les juges sortiront pour calculer la distance des villes voisines du lieu du crime. | 2 then your elders and your judges shall come forth, and they shall measure the distance to the cities which are around him that is slain; |
| 3 Les anciens de la ville la plus proche prendront alors une génisse qu’on n’a pas fait travailler et qui n’a pas encore été attelée. | 3 and the elders of the city which is nearest to the slain man shall take a heifer which has never been worked and which has not pulled in the yoke. |
| 4 Les anciens de cette ville feront descendre la génisse vers un torrent où l’eau ne cesse de couler, mais où il n’y a ni culture ni semence, et là ils lui briseront la nuque dans le torrent. | 4 And the elders of that city shall bring the heifer down to a valley with running water, which is neither plowed nor sown, and shall break the heifer's neck there in the valley. |
| 5 Les prêtres fils de Lévi s’avanceront alors, puisque Yahvé ton Dieu les a choisis pour être à son service et pour bénir au nom de Yahvé, et c’est sur leur parole que se règlent tout procès et tout échange de coups. | 5 And the priests the sons of Levi shall come forward, for the LORD your God has chosen them to minister to him and to bless in the name of the LORD, and by their word every dispute and every assault shall be settled. |
| 6 Et tous les anciens de la ville la plus proche du lieu du crime laveront leurs mains dans le torrent au-dessus de la génisse dont on a brisé la nuque. | 6 And all the elders of that city nearest to the slain man shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley; |
| 7 Puis ils prononceront ces paroles: “Nos mains n’ont pas répandu ce sang, nos yeux n’ont rien vu. | 7 and they shall testify, 'Our hands did not shed this blood, neither did our eyes see it shed. |
| 8 Ô Yahvé, pardonne à ton peuple Israël que tu as racheté, et ne charge pas ton peuple Israël d’un sang innocent.” Ainsi ils seront quittes du sang versé: | 8 Forgive, O LORD, thy people Israel, whom thou hast redeemed, and set not the guilt of innocent blood in the midst of thy people Israel; but let the guilt of blood be forgiven them.' |
| 9 tu auras lavé le sang innocent et tu auras fait ce qui est bon aux yeux de Yahvé. | 9 So you shall purge the guilt of innocent blood from your midst, when you do what is right in the sight of the LORD. |
| 10 Voici un autre cas. Tu pars combattre tes ennemis et Yahvé ton Dieu les livre entre tes mains. Tu ramènes des captifs | 10 "When you go forth to war against your enemies, and the LORD your God gives them into your hands, and you take them captive, |
| 11 et, parmi les captifs, tu vois une belle femme. Si tu t’éprends d’elle et que tu veux l’épouser, | 11 and see among the captives a beautiful woman, and you have desire for her and would take her for yourself as wife, |
| 12 tu l’introduiras dans ta maison. Là, elle se rasera la tête et se coupera les ongles, | 12 then you shall bring her home to your house, and she shall shave her head and pare her nails. |
| 13 elle enlèvera ses habits de captive, ceux qu’elle portait sur elle, et elle habitera dans ta maison. Durant un mois, elle fera le deuil de son père et de sa mère; ensuite tu t’approcheras d’elle, tu l’épouseras et elle sera ta femme. | 13 And she shall put off her captive's garb, and shall remain in your house and bewail her father and her mother a full month; after that you may go in to her, and be her husband, and she shall be your wife. |
| 14 S’il arrive que tu n’en veuilles plus, tu la laisseras partir à son gré; tu ne pourras pas la vendre à prix d’argent ni en faire ton esclave puisque tu as couché avec elle. | 14 Then, if you have no delight in her, you shall let her go where she will; but you shall not sell her for money, you shall not treat her as a slave, since you have humiliated her. |
| 15 Voici un autre cas. Un homme a deux femmes, l’une est bien-aimée et l’autre mal aimée. Toutes les deux lui ont donné des fils, et l’aîné est le fils de la mal-aimée. | 15 "If a man has two wives, the one loved and the other disliked, and they have borne him children, both the loved and the disliked, and if the first-born son is hers that is disliked, |
| 16 Au jour où cet homme partagera son héritage entre ses fils, il ne pourra pas donner le droit d’aînesse au fils de la bien-aimée aux dépens de l’aîné qui est fils de la mal-aimée. | 16 then on the day when he assigns his possessions as an inheritance to his sons, he may not treat the son of the loved as the first-born in preference to the son of the disliked, who is the first-born, |
| 17 Il devra reconnaître comme aîné le fils de la mal-aimée, et il lui donnera une double part de son héritage: puisqu’il est le premier-né, le droit d’aînesse est à lui. | 17 but he shall acknowledge the first-born, the son of the disliked, by giving him a double portion of all that he has, for he is the first issue of his strength; the right of the first-born is his. |
| 18 Voici encore le cas du fils rebelle et révolté qui n’obéit pas à son père ni à sa mère: il ne les écoute pas quand ils le corrigent. | 18 "If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son, who will not obey the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and, though they chastise him, will not give heed to them, |
| 19 Son père et sa mère le prendront et le conduiront vers les anciens, à la porte de la ville. | 19 then his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city at the gate of the place where he lives, |
| 20 Et ils diront aux anciens: “Voici notre fils! Il est rebelle et révolté, il ne nous écoute pas, c’est un débauché et un buveur.” | 20 and they shall say to the elders of his city, 'This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton and a drunkard.' |
| 21 Alors tous les hommes de la ville le lapideront à coups de pierres et il mourra. Tu enlèveras ainsi le mal du milieu de toi; tous ceux qui l’apprendront en Israël, craindront. | 21 Then all the men of the city shall stone him to death with stones; so you shall purge the evil from your midst; and all Israel shall hear, and fear. |
| 22 Voici encore un cas. Quelqu’un a commis une faute qui mérite la mort et tu l’as mis à mort en le pendant à un arbre. | 22 "And if a man has committed a crime punishable by death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, |
| 23 Tu ne laisseras pas son cadavre passer la nuit sur l’arbre, mais tu le mettras au tombeau le jour-même, car un pendu est une malédiction de Dieu. Tu éviteras ainsi de rendre impur le sol que Yahvé ton Dieu te donne en héritage. | 23 his body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but you shall bury him the same day, for a hanged man is accursed by God; you shall not defile your land which the LORD your God gives you for an inheritance. |
