| 1 Jésus était né à Bethléem de Juda, au temps du roi Hérode; alors, des pays de l’Orient, des mages arrivèrent à Jérusalem | 1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem, saying, |
| 2 et demandèrent: "Où se trouve le roi des Juifs qui vient de naître? Nous avons vu son étoile à l’orient et nous sommes venus pour lui rendre hommage.” | 2 "Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him." |
| 3 Quand le roi Hérode l’apprit, il en eut un choc, et tout Jérusalem avec lui. | 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him; |
| 4 Il réunit tous les chefs des prêtres et ceux qui enseignaient la religion au peuple, car il voulait leur faire préciser où devait naître le Christ. | 4 and assembling all the chief priests and scribes of the people, he inquired of them where the Christ was to be born. |
| 5 Ils lui firent cette réponse: "C’est à Bethléem de Juda. Car il est écrit dans le livre du prophète: | 5 They told him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet: |
| 6 Toi, Bethléem en Juda, tu n’es pas le dernier des chefs-lieux de Juda, car c’est de toi que sortira le chef, le pasteur de mon peuple Israël.” | 6 'And you, O Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah; for from you shall come a ruler who will govern my people Israel.'" |
| 7 Alors Hérode convoqua les mages en secret et leur fit préciser le moment où l’étoile leur était apparue. | 7 Then Herod summoned the wise men secretly and ascertained from them what time the star appeared; |
| 8 Il les mit sur le chemin de Bethléem et leur dit: "Allez là-bas et tâchez de bien vous informer sur cet enfant. Si vous le trouvez, vous me le direz, et moi aussi j’irai lui rendre hommage.” | 8 and he sent them to Bethlehem, saying, "Go and search diligently for the child, and when you have found him bring me word, that I too may come and worship him." |
| 9 Après cette entrevue avec le roi ils se mirent en route, et voici que l’étoile qu’ils avaient vue en Orient les conduisait. Finalement elle s’arrêta au dessus de l’endroit où se trouvait l’enfant. | 9 When they had heard the king they went their way; and lo, the star which they had seen in the East went before them, till it came to rest over the place where the child was. |
| 10 Revoir l’étoile fut pour eux une grande joie; | 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy; |
| 11 ils entrèrent dans la maison, ils virent l’enfant avec Marie sa mère et ils se prosternèrent pour l’adorer. Ils ouvrirent alors leurs coffres et lui firent des cadeaux: de l’or, de l’encens et de la myrrhe. | 11 and going into the house they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshipped him. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts, gold and frankincense and myrrh. |
| 12 Ils reçurent alors un avertissement au moyen d’un rêve: ils ne devaient pas revoir Hérode. Ils repartirent donc vers leur pays par un autre chemin. | 12 And being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. |
| 13 Après le départ des mages, un ange du Seigneur vint se manifester à Joseph au cours d’un rêve. Il lui dit: "Lève-toi, prends l’enfant et sa mère et va te réfugier au pays d’Égypte. Tu y resteras jusqu’à ce que je te le dise, car Hérode va rechercher l’enfant pour le faire périr.” | 13 Now when they had departed, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Rise, take the child and his mother, and flee to Egypt, and remain there till I tell you; for Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him." |
| 14 Joseph se leva aussitôt; cette même nuit il prit l’enfant et sa mère et partit au loin vers l’Égypte. | 14 And he rose and took the child and his mother by night, and departed to Egypt, |
| 15 Il y resta jusqu’à la mort d’Hérode et de cette façon s’accomplit ce que le Seigneur avait dit par la bouche du prophète: J’ai fait revenir mon fils d’Égypte. | 15 and remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfil what the Lord had spoken by the prophet, "Out of Egypt have I called my son." |
| 16 Quand Hérode se rendit compte qu’il s’était laissé avoir par les mages, il devint furieux. Il envoya massacrer tous les enfants de Bethléem et des environs, tous ceux qui avaient moins de deux ans, selon les précisions que lui avaient données les mages. | 16 Then Herod, when he saw that he had been tricked by the wise men, was in a furious rage, and he sent and killed all the male children in Bethlehem and in all that region who were two years old or under, according to the time which he had ascertained from the wise men. |
| 17 De cette façon s’accomplit ce qui avait été dit par le prophète Jérémie: | 17 Then was fulfilled what was spoken by the prophet Jeremiah: |
| 18 On a entendu des cris à Rama, on gémit et on n’en finit pas de se lamenter. C’est Rachel qui pleure ses enfants; ils ne sont plus, et elle ne veut pas s’en consoler. | 18 "A voice was heard in Ramah, wailing and loud lamentation, Rachel weeping for her children; she refused to be consoled, because they were no more." |
| 19 Après la mort d’Hérode, voilà qu’un ange du Seigneur apparaît à Joseph en Égypte au cours d’un rêve; | 19 But when Herod died, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt, saying, |
| 20 il lui dit: "Lève-toi, prends l’enfant et sa mère et retourne au pays d’Israël, car ils sont morts, ceux qui en voulaient à la vie de l’enfant.” | 20 "Rise, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, for those who sought the child's life are dead." |
| 21 Quand Joseph se réveille, il prend l’enfant et sa mère pour rentrer au pays d’Israël. | 21 And he rose and took the child and his mother, and went to the land of Israel. |
| 22 Mais lorsqu’il apprend qu’Arkélaüs règne en Judée à la place de son père Hérode, il a peur d’y retourner. Ayant reçu des instructions au cours d’un rêve, il s’éloigne vers la Galilée | 22 But when he heard that Archelaus reigned over Judea in place of his father Herod, he was afraid to go there, and being warned in a dream he withdrew to the district of Galilee. |
| 23 et il s’y établit dans un village appelé Nazareth. De cette façon s’accomplira ce qui a été dit par la bouche des prophètes: On l’appellera Nazaréen. | 23 And he went and dwelt in a city called Nazareth, that what was spoken by the prophets might be fulfilled, "He shall be called a Nazarene." |
