| 1 Yahvé dit à Moïse: | 1 The LORD said to Moses, |
| 2 “Fais payer aux Madianites la vengeance d’Israël, et ensuite tu seras réuni à tes pères.” | 2 "Avenge the people of Israel on the Midianites; afterward you shall be gathered to your people." |
| 3 Moïse dit au peuple: “Que des hommes parmi vous s’équipent pour la guerre et qu’ils aillent combattre Madian, pour lui infliger la vengeance de Yahvé. | 3 And Moses said to the people, "Arm men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midian, to execute the LORD's vengeance on Midian. |
| 4 Vous enverrez à la guerre 1 000 hommes de chacune des tribus d’Israël.” | 4 You shall send a thousand from each of the tribes of Israel to the war." |
| 5 On recruta donc parmi les milliers d’Israël 1 000 hommes par tribu, soit au total 12 000 hommes entraînés pour la guerre. | 5 So there were provided, out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed for war. |
| 6 Moïse envoya à la guerre ces 1 000 hommes de chaque tribu, et Pinhas, le fils d’Éléazar le prêtre, les accompagnait; il avait avec lui les objets sacrés et les trompettes éclatantes. | 6 And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand from each tribe, together with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, with the vessels of the sanctuary and the trumpets for the alarm in his hand. |
| 7 Ils allèrent attaquer Madian, selon l’ordre qu’avait donné Yahvé à Moïse, et ils tuèrent tous les mâles. | 7 They warred against Midian, as the LORD commanded Moses, and slew every male. |
| 8 À cette occasion ils tuèrent les rois de Madian: Évi, Rékem, Sour, Hour et Réba. C’étaient les cinq rois de Madian. Ils tuèrent encore par l’épée Balaam, fils de Béor. | 8 They slew the kings of Midian with the rest of their slain, Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian; and they also slew Balaam the son of Beor with the sword. |
| 9 Les Israélites ramenèrent prisonnières les femmes de Madian, avec leurs petits enfants. Ils ramassèrent toutes les bêtes de somme, tous les troupeaux et tout ce qui leur appartenait, | 9 And the people of Israel took captive the women of Midian and their little ones; and they took as booty all their cattle, their flocks, and all their goods. |
| 10 et ils livrèrent aux flammes toutes leurs villes habitées et leurs campements. | 10 All their cities in the places where they dwelt, and all their encampments, they burned with fire, |
| 11 Après avoir ramassé tout le butin et toutes les dépouilles, hommes et bêtes, | 11 and took all the spoil and all the booty, both of man and of beast. |
| 12 ils amenèrent les prisonniers et le butin à Moïse, au prêtre Éléazar et à la communauté des Israélites, dans les Steppes-de-Moab, près du Jourdain face à Jéricho. | 12 Then they brought the captives and the booty and the spoil to Moses, and to Eleazar the priest, and to the congregation of the people of Israel, at the camp on the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. |
| 13 Moïse, le prêtre Éléazar et tous les chefs de la communauté sortirent du camp à la rencontre des guerriers. | 13 Moses, and Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the congregation, went forth to meet them outside the camp. |
| 14 Moïse se mit alors en colère contre les chefs de l’armée, les chefs de mille et les chefs de cent qui revenaient du combat. | 14 And Moses was angry with the officers of the army, the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, who had come from service in the war. |
| 15 Il leur dit: “Vous avez laissé en vie les femmes! | 15 Moses said to them, "Have you let all the women live? |
| 16 Rappelez-vous, ce sont elles qui, sur la parole de Balaam, ont entraîné les Israélites à l’infidélité envers Yahvé (dans l’affaire de Baal-Péor), et aussitôt un fléau s’est abattu sur la communauté de Yahvé. | 16 Behold, these caused the people of Israel, by the counsel of Balaam, to act treacherously against the LORD in the matter of Peor, and so the plague came among the congregation of the LORD. |
| 17 Maintenant donc, tuez tous les petits enfants mâles et toutes les femmes qui ont connu un homme. | 17 Now therefore, kill every male among the little ones, and kill every woman who has known man by lying with him. |
| 18 Vous ne laisserez vivre que les filles qui n’ont pas encore connu d’hommes, et elles seront pour vous. | 18 But all the young girls who have not known man by lying with him, keep alive for yourselves. |
| 19 Parmi vous, tous ceux qui ont tué un homme, tous ceux qui ont touché un cadavre, vont rester sous la tente en dehors du camp pendant sept jours, et ils se purifieront le troisième et le septième jour. Vous ferez de même pour les prisonnières. | 19 Encamp outside the camp seven days; whoever of you has killed any person, and whoever has touched any slain, purify yourselves and your captives on the third day and on the seventh day. |
| 20 Vous purifierez également tous les habits, tous les vêtements de cuir, tout ce qui est en poil de chèvre ou en bois.” | 20 You shall purify every garment, every article of skin, all work of goats' hair, and every article of wood." |
| 21 Le prêtre Éléazar dit aux hommes de guerre qui étaient allés au combat: “Voici la règle d’après la loi que Yahvé a donnée à Moïse. | 21 And Eleazar the priest said to the men of war who had gone to battle: "This is the statute of the law which the LORD has commanded Moses: |
| 22 Ce qui est en or, en argent, en cuivre, en fer, en étain ou en plomb, | 22 only the gold, the silver, the bronze, the iron, the tin, and the lead, |
| 23 en un mot, tout ce qui va au feu, vous le purifierez par le feu et par l’eau de purification; mais ce qui ne va pas au feu, vous le passerez seulement dans l’eau. | 23 everything that can stand the fire, you shall pass through the fire, and it shall be clean. Nevertheless it shall also be purified with the water of impurity; and whatever cannot stand the fire, you shall pass through the water. |
| 24 Le septième jour, après avoir lavé vos vêtements, vous serez purs. Alors vous pourrez regagner le camp.” | 24 You must wash your clothes on the seventh day, and you shall be clean; and afterward you shall come into the camp." |
| 25 Yahvé dit à Moïse: | 25 The LORD said to Moses, |
| 26 “Avec le prêtre Éléazar et les chefs de famille de la communauté, tu feras le recensement de tout ce qui a été capturé, personnes ou bétail. | 26 "Take the count of the booty that was taken, both of man and of beast, you and Eleazar the priest and the heads of the fathers' houses of the congregation; |
| 27 Tu partageras le butin en deux: une moitié sera pour les hommes de guerre qui sont allés au combat, l’autre pour la communauté. | 27 and divide the booty into two parts, between the warriors who went out to battle and all the congregation. |
| 28 Sur la part des hommes de guerre qui sont allés au combat, tu prélèveras la part de Yahvé: un sur 500, qu’il s’agisse des personnes, du gros bétail, des ânes ou du petit bétail. | 28 And levy for the LORD a tribute from the men of war who went out to battle, one out of five hundred, of the persons and of the oxen and of the asses and of the flocks; |
| 29 Tu prélèveras cette part sur la moitié qui revient aux guerriers et tu la donneras au prêtre Éléazar, comme prélèvement en l’honneur de Yahvé. | 29 take it from their half, and give it to Eleazar the priest as an offering to the LORD. |
| 30 Sur la moitié qui est aux Israélites, tu prendras un pour 50, qu’il s’agisse de personnes, de gros bétail, d’ânes, de petit bétail ou de bêtes de somme, et tu le donneras aux Lévites qui ont la garde de la Demeure de Yahvé.” | 30 And from the people of Israel's half you shall take one drawn out of every fifty, of the persons, of the oxen, of the asses, and of the flocks, of all the cattle, and give them to the Levites who have charge of the tabernacle of the LORD." |
| 31 Moïse et le prêtre Éléazar firent ce que Yahvé avait ordonné à Moïse. | 31 And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as the LORD commanded Moses. |
| 32 Le butin qu’avait ramené les hommes de guerre comprenait: 675 000 têtes de petit bétail, | 32 Now the booty remaining of the spoil that the men of war took was: six hundred and seventy-five thousand sheep, |
| 33 72 000 têtes de gros bétail, | 33 seventy-two thousand cattle, |
| 34 61 000 ânes. | 34 sixty-one thousand asses, |
| 35 Quant aux prisonnières, les femmes qui n’avaient pas encore couché avec un homme, elles étaient en tout 32 000. | 35 and thirty-two thousand persons in all, women who had not known man by lying with him. |
| 36 La moitié qui revenait aux hommes de guerre comprenait donc 337 500 têtes de petit bétail, | 36 And the half, the portion of those who had gone out to war, was in number three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep, |
| 37 et la part pour Yahvé sur le petit bétail fut de 675. | 37 and the LORD's tribute of sheep was six hundred and seventy-five. |
| 38 Il y avait 36 000 têtes de gros bétail, et la part pour Yahvé fut de 72. | 38 The cattle were thirty-six thousand, of which the LORD's tribute was seventy-two. |
| 39 Sur les 30 500 ânes, la part pour Yahvé fut de 61. | 39 The asses were thirty thousand five hundred, of which the LORD's tribute was sixty-one. |
| 40 Les prisonnières étaient au nombre de 16 000 et la part pour Yahvé fut de 32. | 40 The persons were sixteen thousand, of which the LORD's tribute was thirty-two persons. |
| 41 Moïse remit donc au prêtre Éléazar la part de Yahvé, comme Yahvé l’avait ordonné à Moïse. | 41 And Moses gave the tribute, which was the offering for the LORD, to Eleazar the priest, as the LORD commanded Moses. |
| 42 Moïse avait séparé la moitié qui revenait aux Israélites de celle qui revenait aux guerriers. | 42 From the people of Israel's half, which Moses separated from that of the men who had gone to war-- |
| 43 La moitié qui revenait à la communauté comprenait: 337 500 têtes de petit bétail, | 43 now the congregation's half was three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred sheep, |
| 44 36 000 têtes de gros bétail, | 44 thirty-six thousand cattle, |
| 45 30 500 ânes, | 45 and thirty thousand five hundred asses, |
| 46 et 16 000 prisonnières. | 46 and sixteen thousand persons-- |

| 48 Les chefs de l’armée s’approchèrent alors de Moïse. Ces chefs de milliers, ou de centaines, | 48 Then the officers who were over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, came near to Moses, |
| 49 lui dirent: “Tes serviteurs ont fait le recensement des hommes qui sont partis au combat avec nous, il n’en manque pas un seul. | 49 and said to Moses, "Your servants have counted the men of war who are under our command, and there is not a man missing from us. |
| 50 Chacun de nous offrira donc à Yahvé ce qu’il a trouvé comme objets en or: chaînettes, bracelets, anneaux, boucles, boules, afin d’obtenir pour nous la miséricorde de Yahvé.” | 50 And we have brought the LORD's offering, what each man found, articles of gold, armlets and bracelets, signet rings, earrings, and beads, to make atonement for ourselves before the LORD." |
| 51 Moïse et le prêtre Éléazar acceptèrent donc tout cet or travaillé. | 51 And Moses and Eleazar the priest received from them the gold, all wrought articles. |
| 52 Le total de l’or qu’ils avaient apporté, ce que les chefs de milliers et les chefs de centaines avaient mis de côté pour Yahvé, fut de 16 750 sicles; | 52 And all the gold of the offering that they offered to the LORD, from the commanders of thousands and the commanders of hundreds, was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels. |
| 53 les hommes de troupe gardèrent pour eux leur butin. | 53 (The men of war had taken booty, every man for himself.) |
| 54 Moïse et le prêtre Éléazar reçurent donc cet or apporté par les chefs de milliers et les chefs de centaines. Ils le remirent à la Tente du Rendez-Vous, devant Yahvé, pour qu’il se souvienne des Israélites. | 54 And Moses and Eleazar the priest received the gold from the commanders of thousands and of hundreds, and brought it into the tent of meeting, as a memorial for the people of Israel before the LORD. |
