| 3 Joab dit: “Que Yahvé multiplie son peuple par cent, mon seigneur le roi; ne sont-ils pas tous tes serviteurs? Mais pourquoi mon seigneur fait-il ce recensement? Pourquoi faire courir à Israël les risques d’une telle faute?” | 3 But Joab said, "May the LORD add to his people a hundred times as many as they are! Are they not, my lord the king, all of them my lord's servants? Why then should my lord require this? Why should he bring guilt upon Israel?" |
| 4 Cependant le roi imposa cet ordre à Joab, et Joab partit. Après avoir parcouru tout Israël, il rentra à Jérusalem. | 4 But the king's word prevailed against Joab. So Joab departed and went throughout all Israel, and came back to Jerusalem. |
| 5 Joab donna alors à David les chiffres du recensement de la population: dans tout Israël ils étaient 1 100 000 hommes capables de tirer l’épée, et Juda comptait 470 000 hommes capables de tirer l’épée. | 5 And Joab gave the sum of the numbering of the people to David. In all Israel there were one million one hundred thousand men who drew the sword, and in Judah four hundred and seventy thousand who drew the sword. |
| 6 Comme Joab désapprouvait l’ordre donné par le roi, il n’avait recensé ni Lévi ni Benjamin. | 6 But he did not include Levi and Benjamin in the numbering, for the king's command was abhorrent to Joab. |
| 7 Mais Dieu frappa Israël, car tout cela lui avait déplu. | 7 But God was displeased with this thing, and he smote Israel. |
| 8 Alors David dit à Dieu: “J’ai commis un grave péché en agissant ainsi, mais maintenant je te supplie de me pardonner cette faute, j’ai été vraiment insensé.” | 8 And David said to God, "I have sinned greatly in that I have done this thing. But now, I pray thee, take away the iniquity of thy servant; for I have done very foolishly." |
| 9 À ce moment Yahvé parla à Gad, le voyant de David: | 9 And the LORD spoke to Gad, David's seer, saying, |
| 10 “Va dire à David cette parole de Yahvé: Je t’offre trois possibilités, choisis-en une et j’agirai ainsi avec toi.” | 10 "Go and say to David, 'Thus says the LORD, Three things I offer you; choose one of them, that I may do it to you.'" |
| 11 Gad alla trouver David et lui dit: “Yahvé te donne à choisir: | 11 So Gad came to David and said to him, "Thus says the LORD, 'Take which you will: |
| 12 trois années de famine, ou trois mois durant lesquels tu fuiras devant l’adversaire et l’ennemi te poursuivra, ou trois jours durant lesquels l’épée de Yahvé, la peste, ravagera ta terre et l’ange destructeur de Yahvé répandra la mort sur tout Israël. Maintenant décide: Quelle réponse dois-je porter à Celui qui m’a envoyé.” | 12 either three years of famine; or three months of devastation by your foes, while the sword of your enemies overtakes you; or else three days of the sword of the LORD, pestilence upon the land, and the angel of the LORD destroying throughout all the territory of Israel.' Now decide what answer I shall return to him who sent me." |
| 13 David dit à Gad: “Le choix est difficile, mais mieux vaut tomber dans les mains de Yahvé que dans les mains des hommes, car grande est sa miséricorde.” | 13 Then David said to Gad, "I am in great distress; let me fall into the hand of the LORD, for his mercy is very great; but let me not fall into the hand of man." |
| 14 Alors Yahvé envoya la peste sur Israël et 70 000 hommes d’Israël moururent. | 14 So the LORD sent a pestilence upon Israel; and there fell seventy thousand men of Israel. |
| 15 Dieu envoya l’Ange sur Jérusalem pour la détruire, mais au moment où il allait la détruire, Yahvé regarda et revint sur sa décision; il dit à l’Ange destructeur: “Assez! Maintenant retire ta main!” L’ange de Yahvé se tenait près de l’aire d’Ornan le Jébusite. | 15 And God sent the angel to Jerusalem to destroy it; but when he was about to destroy it, the LORD saw, and he repented of the evil; and he said to the destroying angel, "It is enough; now stay your hand." And the angel of the LORD was standing by the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. |
| 16 David leva les yeux et vit l’ange de Yahvé qui se tenait entre ciel et terre, brandissant une épée nue à la main, prêt à détruire Jérusalem. Alors David et les anciens vêtus de sacs tombèrent la face contre terre. | 16 And David lifted his eyes and saw the angel of the LORD standing between earth and heaven, and in his hand a drawn sword stretched out over Jerusalem. Then David and the elders, clothed in sackcloth, fell upon their faces. |
| 17 David dit à Dieu: “N’est-ce pas moi qui ai commandé de recenser le peuple? C’est moi qui ai péché et qui ai commis le mal; mais ceux-là ne sont que le troupeau, qu’ont-ils fait? Yahvé, mon Dieu, que ta main tombe sur moi et sur ma famille, mais épargne à ton peuple cette souffrance!” | 17 And David said to God, "Was it not I who gave command to number the people? It is I who have sinned and done very wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? Let thy hand, I pray thee, O LORD my God, be against me and against my father's house; but let not the plague be upon thy people." |
| 18 L’ange de Yahvé dit alors à Gad: “David doit monter construire un autel à Yahvé sur l’aire d’Ornan le Jébusite.” | 18 Then the angel of the LORD commanded Gad to say to David that David should go up and rear an altar to the LORD on the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite. |
| 19 David monta donc selon l’ordre que lui avait donné Gad de la part de Yahvé. | 19 So David went up at Gad's word, which he had spoken in the name of the LORD. |
| 20 C’est alors qu’Ornan aperçut l’ange en se retournant; il se cacha avec ses quatre fils. Ornan était en train de battre le blé | 20 Now Ornan was threshing wheat; he turned and saw the angel, and his four sons who were with him hid themselves. |
| 21 quand David s’approcha de lui. Ornan leva les yeux et vit David venir vers lui, il laissa l’aire et, le visage contre terre, il rendit hommage à David. | 21 As David came to Ornan, Ornan looked and saw David and went forth from the threshing floor, and did obeisance to David with his face to the ground. |
| 22 David dit alors à Ornan: “Vends-moi ton aire à battre pour y construire un autel à Yahvé. Vends-la moi à son vrai prix, afin que la peste se détourne du peuple.” | 22 And David said to Ornan, "Give me the site of the threshing floor that I may build on it an altar to the LORD--give it to me at its full price--that the plague may be averted from the people." |
| 23 Ornan dit à David: “Prends-la et que mon seigneur le roi fasse comme il lui semble juste. Regarde, je donne les bœufs pour les holocaustes, les herses pour le bois et le blé pour l’oblation. Tout cela, je le donne.” | 23 Then Ornan said to David, "Take it; and let my lord the king do what seems good to him; see, I give the oxen for burnt offerings, and the threshing sledges for the wood, and the wheat for a cereal offering. I give it all." |
| 24 Mais le roi David dit à Ornan: “Non, je dois te l’acheter à son vrai prix. Je ne vais pas prendre pour Yahvé ce qui est à toi et faire des holocaustes qui ne me coûtent rien!” | 24 But King David said to Ornan, "No, but I will buy it for the full price; I will not take for the LORD what is yours, nor offer burnt offerings which cost me nothing." |
| 25 Aussi David donna donc à Ornan 600 sicles d’or pour l’aire à battre. | 25 So David paid Ornan six hundred shekels of gold by weight for the site. |
| 26 David fit construire un autel à cet endroit pour Yahvé; il y fit monter la fumée des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion. Il invoqua Yahvé qui lui répondit par le feu du ciel sur l’autel où se trouvait l’holocauste. | 26 And David built there an altar to the LORD and presented burnt offerings and peace offerings, and called upon the LORD, and he answered him with fire from heaven upon the altar of burnt offering. |
| 27 Après quoi Yahvé ordonna à l’ange de remettre son épée au fourreau. | 27 Then the LORD commanded the angel; and he put his sword back into its sheath. |
| 28 Voyant que Yahvé lui avait répondu à cet endroit, David continua d’y offrir des sacrifices. | 28 At that time, when David saw that the LORD had answered him at the threshing floor of Ornan the Jebusite, he made his sacrifices there. |
| 29 La Demeure de Yahvé que Moïse avait faite dans le désert était alors avec l’autel des holocaustes dans le Haut-Lieu de Gabaon, | 29 For the tabernacle of the LORD, which Moses had made in the wilderness, and the altar of burnt offering were at that time in the high place at Gibeon; |
| 30 mais David avait été tellement effrayé par l’épée de l’ange de Yahvé, qu’il n’y était pas allé pour consulter Dieu. | 30 but David could not go before it to inquire of God, for he was afraid of the sword of the angel of the LORD. |
