| 1 Salomon devint gendre du Pharaon d’Égypte; il épousa la fille du Pharaon et la mena dans la cité de David, car il n’avait pas encore fini de construire sa maison, la maison de Yahvé et le rempart de Jérusalem. | 1 Solomon made a marriage alliance with Pharaoh king of Egypt; he took Pharaoh's daughter, and brought her into the city of David, until he had finished building his own house and the house of the LORD and the wall around Jerusalem. |
| 2 Le peuple offrait alors des sacrifices sur les Hauts-Lieux car la maison destinée au Nom de Yahvé n’était pas encore bâtie. | 2 The people were sacrificing at the high places, however, because no house had yet been built for the name of the LORD. |
| 3 Salomon aimait Yahvé, il marchait selon les préceptes de son père David, mais il offrait des sacrifices sur les Hauts-Lieux et y brûlait des parfums. | 3 Solomon loved the LORD, walking in the statutes of David his father; only, he sacrificed and burnt incense at the high places. |
| 4 Le roi se rendit à Gabaon pour y offrir des sacrifices; c’était le Haut-Lieu principal et Salomon offrit mille holocaustes sur cet autel. | 4 And the king went to Gibeon to sacrifice there, for that was the great high place; Solomon used to offer a thousand burnt offerings upon that altar. |
| 5 Là, à Gabaon, Yahvé apparut en songe à Salomon pendant la nuit. Il lui dit: “Demande-moi ce que tu veux et je te le donnerai.” | 5 At Gibeon the LORD appeared to Solomon in a dream by night; and God said, "Ask what I shall give you." |
| 6 Salomon répondit: “Tu as montré une très grande bonté à ton serviteur David, mon père; il est vrai qu’il marchait en ta présence dans la fidélité, la justice et la sincérité. Tu n’as pas mis fin à cette grande bonté à son égard: tu as voulu que son fils soit assis aujourd’hui sur son trône. | 6 And Solomon said, "Thou hast shown great and steadfast love to thy servant David my father, because he walked before thee in faithfulness, in righteousness, and in uprightness of heart toward thee; and thou hast kept for him this great and steadfast love, and hast given him a son to sit on his throne this day. |
| 7 Tu m’as fait roi, Yahvé, mon Dieu, à la place de mon père David. Mais je ne suis qu’un tout jeune homme et je ne sais encore pas agir. | 7 And now, O LORD my God, thou hast made thy servant king in place of David my father, although I am but a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in. |
| 8 Ton serviteur se retrouve avec ton peuple, que tu as choisi toi-même, et c’est un peuple si nombreux qu’on ne peut ni l’évaluer, ni le compter. | 8 And thy servant is in the midst of thy people whom thou hast chosen, a great people, that cannot be numbered or counted for multitude. |
| 9 Accorde donc à ton serviteur l’intelligence pour distinguer entre le bien et le mal lorsqu’il gouverne ton peuple. Qui pourrait en effet bien gouverner un peuple aussi important?” | 9 Give thy servant therefore an understanding mind to govern thy people, that I may discern between good and evil; for who is able to govern this thy great people?" |
| 10 La demande de Salomon plut au Seigneur, | 10 It pleased the Lord that Solomon had asked this. |
| 11 et Dieu lui dit: “Je retiens que tu n’as demandé pour toi ni une longue vie, ni la richesse, ni la mort de tes ennemis. Parce que tu m’as fait cette autre demande, parce que tu m’as demandé l’intelligence pour exercer la justice, | 11 And God said to him, "Because you have asked this, and have not asked for yourself long life or riches or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern what is right, |
| 12 je vais faire ce que tu m’as demandé. Je te donne un cœur sage et intelligent, tel qu’il n’y en a pas eu de pareil avant toi et qu’il n’y en aura pas de pareil après toi. | 12 behold, I now do according to your word. Behold, I give you a wise and discerning mind, so that none like you has been before you and none like you shall arise after you. |
| 13 Et je te donnerai même ce que tu n’as pas demandé: tu auras richesse et gloire plus qu’aucun autre roi de la terre durant ta vie. | 13 I give you also what you have not asked, both riches and honor, so that no other king shall compare with you, all your days. |
| 14 Si tu marches dans mes voies, si tu observes mes ordonnances et mes commandements comme l’a fait ton père David, je te donnerai longue vie.” | 14 And if you will walk in my ways, keeping my statutes and my commandments, as your father David walked, then I will lengthen your days." |
| 15 Alors Salomon s’éveilla: il comprit que c’était un rêve. Une fois rentré à Jérusalem, il alla officier face à l’Arche de l’Alliance de Yahvé et il offrit des holocaustes et des sacrifices de communion; puis il donna un grand repas à tous ses serviteurs. | 15 And Solomon awoke, and behold, it was a dream. Then he came to Jerusalem, and stood before the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and offered up burnt offerings and peace offerings, and made a feast for all his servants. |
| 16 Deux prostituées vinrent au tribunal du roi. | 16 Then two harlots came to the king, and stood before him. |
| 17 L’une d’elles lui dit: “Je t’en prie, mon seigneur, cette femme et moi nous habitons la même maison et dans cette maison j’ai donné le jour à un enfant. | 17 The one woman said, "Oh, my lord, this woman and I dwell in the same house; and I gave birth to a child while she was in the house. |
| 18 Trois jours après la naissance, elle aussi a mis au monde un enfant. Nous étions ensemble, aucune personne étrangère avec nous, nous étions seules dans la maison. | 18 Then on the third day after I was delivered, this woman also gave birth; and we were alone; there was no one else with us in the house, only we two were in the house. |
| 19 Or, durant la nuit, le fils de cette femme est mort car elle s’était couchée sur lui. | 19 And this woman's son died in the night, because she lay on it. |
| 20 Alors elle se lève au milieu de la nuit, elle prend mon fils à côté de moi tandis que je dors, elle le couche sur elle et elle place son fils mort à côté de moi. | 20 And she arose at midnight, and took my son from beside me, while your maidservant slept, and laid it in her bosom, and laid her dead son in my bosom. |
| 21 Au matin, lorsque je me lève pour allaiter mon fils, je vois qu’il est mort, mais en regardant attentivement, je m’aperçois que ce n’est pas l’enfant que j’ai mis au monde.” | 21 When I rose in the morning to nurse my child, behold, it was dead; but when I looked at it closely in the morning, behold, it was not the child that I had borne." |
| 22 À ce moment l’autre femme se met à crier: “C’est mon fils qui est vivant et c’est ton fils qui est mort!” Et la première réplique: “Ce n’est pas vrai, c’est ton fils qui est mort, le mien est en vie!” Et elles se disputaient ainsi devant le roi. | 22 But the other woman said, "No, the living child is mine, and the dead child is yours." The first said, "No, the dead child is yours, and the living child is mine." Thus they spoke before the king. |
| 23 Le roi prit la parole: “Tu dis, toi: C’est mon fils qui est vivant et c’est ton fils qui est mort. Et toi tu dis: Non! C’est ton fils qui est mort et c’est le mien qui est vivant.” | 23 Then the king said, "The one says, 'This is my son that is alive, and your son is dead'; and the other says, 'No; but your son is dead, and my son is the living one.'" |
| 24 Le roi ordonna: “Apportez-moi une épée.” On apporta l’épée devant le roi. | 24 And the king said, "Bring me a sword." So a sword was brought before the king. |
| 25 Le roi dit alors: “Coupez en deux l’enfant qui vit, et donnez-en la moitié à l’une et l’autre moitié à l’autre.” | 25 And the king said, "Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other." |
| 26 Alors la femme dont le fils était vivant dit au roi, car elle était bouleversée dans son cœur de mère: “Non, je t’en prie, mon seigneur, donne-lui plutôt l’enfant qui vit, qu’on ne le tue pas.” Mais l’autre répliquait: “Il ne sera ni à toi, ni à moi, partagez-le.” | 26 Then the woman whose son was alive said to the king, because her heart yearned for her son, "Oh, my lord, give her the living child, and by no means slay it." But the other said, "It shall be neither mine nor yours; divide it." |
| 27 Alors le roi décida: “Donnez l’enfant qui vit à la première, ne le tuez pas; c’est elle qui est la mère.” | 27 Then the king answered and said, "Give the living child to the first woman, and by no means slay it; she is its mother." |
| 28 Tout Israël entendit parler du jugement que le roi avait prononcé; dès lors on eut un grand respect pour le roi car on voyait que la sagesse de Dieu était en lui lorsqu’il rendait la justice. | 28 And all Israel heard of the judgment which the king had rendered; and they stood in awe of the king, because they perceived that the wisdom of God was in him, to render justice. |
