| 1 Au retour de l’année, au moment où les rois se mettent en campagne, David envoya Joab avec sa garde et tout Israël. Ils massacrèrent les Ammonites et assiégèrent Rabba, pendant que David restait à Jérusalem. | 1 In the spring of the year, the time when kings go forth to battle, David sent Joab, and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they ravaged the Ammonites, and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem. |
| 2 Or un soir, comme David s’était levé de son lit et faisait les 100 pas sur la terrasse du palais, il aperçut du haut de sa terrasse une femme qui prenait son bain; la femme était fort belle. | 2 It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking upon the roof of the king's house, that he saw from the roof a woman bathing; and the woman was very beautiful. |
| 3 David se renseigna sur cette femme et on lui répondit: “C’est Bethsabée fille d’Éliam, la femme d’Urie le Hittite.” | 3 And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, "Is not this Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?" |
| 4 David envoya des gens pour la lui amener. Elle arriva chez lui, il coucha avec elle alors qu’elle venait de se purifier de ses règles, puis elle retourna dans sa maison. | 4 So David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she was purifying herself from her uncleanness.) Then she returned to her house. |
| 5 Voyant qu’elle était prise, la femme envoya dire à David: “Je suis enceinte.” | 5 And the woman conceived; and she sent and told David, "I am with child." |
| 6 Alors David fit passer ce message à Joab: “Envoie-moi Urie le Hittite.” Et Joab envoya Urie à David. | 6 So David sent word to Joab, "Send me Uriah the Hittite." And Joab sent Uriah to David. |
| 7 Urie arriva, David lui demanda des nouvelles de l’armée et de la guerre, | 7 When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab was doing, and how the people fared, and how the war prospered. |
| 8 puis il dit à Urie: “Va chez toi, tu as bien le droit de te laver les pieds.” Urie sortit de chez le roi et David envoya derrière lui un cadeau de sa table. | 8 Then David said to Uriah, "Go down to your house, and wash your feet." And Uriah went out of the king's house, and there followed him a present from the king. |
| 9 Mais Urie ne rentra pas chez lui, il coucha à la porte de la maison du roi avec tous les gardes de son maître. | 9 But Uriah slept at the door of the king's house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go down to his house. |
| 10 On informa David: “Urie n’est pas descendu chez lui.” David demanda à Urie: “Ne viens-tu pas de voyager? Pourquoi n’es-tu pas descendu chez toi?” | 10 When they told David, "Uriah did not go down to his house," David said to Uriah, "Have you not come from a journey? Why did you not go down to your house?" |
| 11 Urie répondit à David: “L’Arche de Dieu, Israël et Juda logent sous des tentes. Mon maître Joab et la garde de mon seigneur le roi campent en rase campagne, et moi, je rentrerais chez moi pour manger et boire, pour coucher avec ma femme? Aussi vrai que Yahvé est vivant et que tu vis toi-même, jamais je ne ferai une chose pareille.” | 11 Uriah said to David, "The ark and Israel and Judah dwell in booths; and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field; shall I then go to my house, to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you live, and as your soul lives, I will not do this thing." |
| 12 Alors David dit à Urie: “Reste encore ici aujourd’hui et demain tu repartiras.” Urie resta donc à Jérusalem ce jour-là. Le lendemain | 12 Then David said to Uriah, "Remain here today also, and tomorrow I will let you depart." So Uriah remained in Jerusalem that day, and the next. |
| 13 David l’invita à manger et à boire à sa table, et il l’enivra. Cependant, ce soir-là encore Urie ne descendit pas chez lui: il se coucha avec les serviteurs de son maître. | 13 And David invited him, and he ate in his presence and drank, so that he made him drunk; and in the evening he went out to lie on his couch with the servants of his lord, but he did not go down to his house. |
| 14 Le lendemain matin, David écrivit une lettre à Joab et la fit porter par Urie. | 14 In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab, and sent it by the hand of Uriah. |
| 15 Il écrivait ceci dans la lettre: “Placez Urie au plus fort de la bataille, ensuite écartez-vous de lui pour qu’il soit frappé et qu’il meure.” | 15 In the letter he wrote, "Set Uriah in the forefront of the hardest fighting, and then draw back from him, that he may be struck down, and die." |
| 16 Joab assiégeait alors la ville, il plaça Urie à l’endroit où se trouvaient les meilleurs défenseurs. | 16 And as Joab was besieging the city, he assigned Uriah to the place where he knew there were valiant men. |
| 17 Les gens de la ville firent une sortie et attaquèrent Joab, il y eut des morts dans l’armée parmi les officiers de David et Urie le Hittite mourut aussi. | 17 And the men of the city came out and fought with Joab; and some of the servants of David among the people fell. Uriah the Hittite was slain also. |
| 18 Joab fit porter à David des nouvelles des opérations, | 18 Then Joab sent and told David all the news about the fighting; |
| 19 et il donna cet ordre au messager: “Lorsque tu auras achevé de raconter au roi tous les détails de la bataille, | 19 and he instructed the messenger, "When you have finished telling all the news about the fighting to the king, |
| 20 peut-être le roi se mettra en colère et te dira: ‘Pourquoi vous êtes-vous approchés de la ville dans cette rencontre? Ne savez-vous donc pas que l’on tire du haut des remparts? | 20 then, if the king's anger rises, and if he says to you, 'Why did you go so near the city to fight? Did you not know that they would shoot from the wall? |
| 21 Qui donc a frappé Abimélek, fils de Yéroubbaal? N’est-ce pas une femme qui lui a balancé une meule du haut des murs de Tébès, et il en est mort? Pourquoi vous êtes-vous approchés du mur?’ Alors tu répondras simplement: ‘Ton serviteur Urie le Hittite est mort lui aussi.’ ” | 21 Who killed Abimelech the son of Jerubbesheth? Did not a woman cast an upper millstone upon him from the wall, so that he died at Thebez? Why did you go so near the wall?' then you shall say, 'Your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also.'" |
| 22 Le messager partit; à son arrivée il redit à David tout le message de Joab. David se mit en colère. | 22 So the messenger went, and came and told David all that Joab had sent him to tell. |
| 23 Alors le messager lui répondit: “Ces hommes ont essayé un coup de force contre nous, ils ont fait une sortie en rase campagne, et nous, nous les avons refoulés jusqu’à la porte de la ville. | 23 The messenger said to David, "The men gained an advantage over us, and came out against us in the field; but we drove them back to the entrance of the gate. |
| 24 Mais alors les archers ont tiré du haut des remparts sur tes serviteurs, plusieurs des gardes du roi sont morts et ton serviteur Urie le Hittite est parmi les morts.” | 24 Then the archers shot at your servants from the wall; some of the king's servants are dead; and your servant Uriah the Hittite is dead also." |
| 25 David dit au messager: “Tu diras à Joab qu’il ne se fasse pas de souci pour cette affaire, car l’épée dévore tantôt celui-ci, tantôt celui-là. Dis-lui qu’il renforce son attaque contre la ville jusqu’à la détruire: dis-lui de tenir ferme.” | 25 David said to the messenger, "Thus shall you say to Joab, 'Do not let this matter trouble you, for the sword devours now one and now another; strengthen your attack upon the city, and overthrow it.' And encourage him." |
| 26 La femme d’Urie apprit que son mari était mort. Elle en fit le deuil, | 26 When the wife of Uriah heard that Uriah her husband was dead, she made lamentation for her husband. |
| 27 et quand les jours du deuil furent achevés, David l’envoya chercher. Il la prit chez lui, elle devint sa femme et elle lui donna un fils; mais ce que David avait fait parut très mal à Yahvé. | 27 And when the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son. But the thing that David had done displeased the LORD. |
