| 2 Abraham dit au plus vieux serviteur de sa maison, qui était l’intendant de tous ses biens: “Mets donc ta main sous ma cuisse, | 2 And Abraham said to his servant, the oldest of his house, who had charge of all that he had, "Put your hand under my thigh, |
| 3 et jure-moi par Yahvé Dieu du ciel et Dieu de la terre, de ne pas prendre comme femme pour mon fils, une fille des Cananéens au milieu desquels j’habite. | 3 and I will make you swear by the LORD, the God of heaven and of the earth, that you will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, among whom I dwell, |
| 4 C’est dans mon pays et dans ma parenté que tu iras chercher une femme pour mon fils Isaac.” | 4 but will go to my country and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son Isaac." |
| 5 Son serviteur lui répondit: “La femme ne voudra peut-être pas me suivre jusqu’ici, dans ce pays. Devrai-je alors reconduire ton fils au pays que tu as quitté?” | 5 The servant said to him, "Perhaps the woman may not be willing to follow me to this land; must I then take your son back to the land from which you came?" |
| 6 Abraham lui dit: “Garde-toi bien de reconduire mon fils là-bas. | 6 Abraham said to him, "See to it that you do not take my son back there. |
| 7 “Yahvé, le Dieu du ciel, qui m’a pris dans la maison de mon père, dans mon pays natal, qui m’a parlé et m’a juré de donner ce pays à ma descendance, lui-même enverra son ange devant toi pour que tu trouves là-bas une femme pour mon fils. | 7 The LORD, the God of heaven, who took me from my father's house and from the land of my birth, and who spoke to me and swore to me, 'To your descendants I will give this land,' he will send his angel before you, and you shall take a wife for my son from there. |
| 8 Si la femme ne veut pas te suivre, tu seras quitte du serment que tu me prêtes aujourd’hui, mais en aucun cas tu ne reconduiras mon fils là-bas.” | 8 But if the woman is not willing to follow you, then you will be free from this oath of mine; only you must not take my son back there." |
| 9 Le serviteur mit donc sa main sous la cuisse d’Abraham son maître et lui prêta ce serment. | 9 So the servant put his hand under the thigh of Abraham his master, and swore to him concerning this matter. |
| 10 Le serviteur prit dix chameaux parmi les chameaux de son maître et se mit en route. Il emportait avec lui tout ce qu’il y avait de meilleur chez son maître. Puis il se leva et s’en alla jusqu’à la ville de Nahor, au pays d’Aram-Naharaïm. | 10 Then the servant took ten of his master's camels and departed, taking all sorts of choice gifts from his master; and he arose, and went to Mesopotamia, to the city of Nahor. |
| 11 Il fit agenouiller ses chameaux hors de la ville, à côté d’un puits: c’était à la tombée du jour, à l’heure où les femmes s’en vont puiser. | 11 And he made the camels kneel down outside the city by the well of water at the time of evening, the time when women go out to draw water. |
| 12 Alors il dit: “Yahvé, Dieu de mon maître Abraham, donne-moi de faire aujourd’hui une bonne rencontre, sois bon pour mon maître Abraham! | 12 And he said, "O LORD, God of my master Abraham, grant me success today, I pray thee, and show steadfast love to my master Abraham. |
| 13 Je vais rester là près de la source d’eau, puisqu’à cette heure les filles de la ville sortent pour puiser de l’eau. | 13 Behold, I am standing by the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water. |
| 14 Je vais dire à l’une d’elles: Penche ta cruche pour que je boive. Si elle me répond: Bois, et je donnerai aussi à boire à tes chameaux, fais que cette jeune fille soit celle que tu as choisie pour ton serviteur Isaac. Ainsi je saurai que tu as montré ta bonté à mon maître.” | 14 Let the maiden to whom I shall say, 'Pray let down your jar that I may drink,' and who shall say, 'Drink, and I will water your camels--let her be the one whom thou hast appointed for thy servant Isaac. By this I shall know that thou hast shown steadfast love to my master." |
| 15 Il parlait encore lorsque sortit Rébecca, portant sa cruche sur l’épaule. Elle était la fille de Bétuel, le fils que Milka avait donné à Nahor, frère d’Abraham. | 15 Before he had done speaking, behold, Rebekah, who was born to Bethuel the son of Milcah, the wife of Nahor, Abraham's brother, came out with her water jar upon her shoulder. |
| 16 La jeune fille était très belle, elle était vierge et aucun homme ne s’était approché d’elle. Elle descendit à la source, remplit sa cruche et remonta. | 16 The maiden was very fair to look upon, a virgin, whom no man had known. She went down to the spring, and filled her jar, and came up. |
| 17 Le serviteur d’Abraham courut alors à sa rencontre et lui dit: “Laisse-moi donc boire un peu d’eau de ta cruche.” | 17 Then the servant ran to meet her, and said, "Pray give me a little water to drink from your jar." |
| 18 Elle dit: “Que mon seigneur boive”, et penchant aussitôt sa cruche sur sa main, elle lui donna à boire. | 18 She said, "Drink, my lord"; and she quickly let down her jar upon her hand, and gave him a drink. |
| 19 Lorsqu’elle eut fini de lui donner à boire, elle ajouta: “Je puiserai encore pour tes chameaux jusqu’à ce qu’ils aient fini de boire.” | 19 When she had finished giving him a drink, she said, "I will draw for your camels also, until they have done drinking." |
| 20 Elle se dépêcha donc de vider sa cruche dans l’abreuvoir, elle courut de nouveau au puits pour puiser et puiser encore pour tous ses chameaux. | 20 So she quickly emptied her jar into the trough and ran again to the well to draw, and she drew for all his camels. |
| 21 L’homme la regardait en silence: il se demandait si Yahvé avait fait réussir son voyage. | 21 The man gazed at her in silence to learn whether the LORD had prospered his journey or not. |
| 22 Lorsque les chameaux eurent fini de boire, l’homme prit un anneau d’or pesant environ 6 grammes, qu’il mit à son nez, et pour ses bras, deux bracelets d’or d’un poids de 60 grammes. | 22 When the camels had done drinking, the man took a gold ring weighing a half shekel, and two bracelets for her arms weighing ten gold shekels, |
| 23 Il lui dit alors: “De qui es-tu la fille? Dis-le moi s’il te plaît. Y a-t-il dans la maison de ton père un endroit où nous pourrions passer la nuit?” | 23 and said, "Tell me whose daughter you are. Is there room in your father's house for us to lodge in?" |
| 24 Elle répondit: “Je suis la fille de Bétuel, le fils que Milka a donné à Nahor.” | 24 She said to him, "I am the daughter of Bethuel the son of Milcah, whom she bore to Nahor." |
| 25 Elle ajouta: “Il y a beaucoup de paille et de fourrage chez nous, et de la place pour passer la nuit.” | 25 She added, "We have both straw and provender enough, and room to lodge in." |
| 26 L’homme se mit alors à genoux pour adorer Yahvé. | 26 The man bowed his head and worshiped the LORD, |
| 27 Il s’écria: “Béni soit Yahvé, le Dieu de mon maître Abraham! Il n’a pas manqué à sa bienveillance et sa fidélité envers mon maître. Oui, Yahvé a fait que ma route aboutisse à la maison de la famille de mon maître.” | 27 and said, "Blessed be the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who has not forsaken his steadfast love and his faithfulness toward my master. As for me, the LORD has led me in the way to the house of my master's kinsmen." |
| 28 Pendant ce temps la jeune fille courait à la maison de sa mère pour raconter toute l’affaire. | 28 Then the maiden ran and told her mother's household about these things. |
| 29 Or Rébecca avait un frère qui s’appelait Laban. Laban sortit et courut vers la source à la rencontre de l’homme. | 29 Rebekah had a brother whose name was Laban; and Laban ran out to the man, to the spring. |
| 30 Il avait vu en effet l’anneau et les bracelets aux bras de sa sœur, il avait entendu Rébecca sa sœur, qui racontait: “Voici comment m’a parlé cet homme”. Il partit donc à la rencontre de l’homme qui se tenait toujours près des chameaux, à côté de la source, | 30 When he saw the ring, and the bracelets on his sister's arms, and when he heard the words of Rebekah his sister, "Thus the man spoke to me," he went to the man; and behold, he was standing by the camels at the spring. |
| 31 et il lui dit: “Sois chez nous comme un homme béni de Yahvé! Pourquoi restes-tu dehors? J’ai débarrassé la maison et j’y ai fait de la place pour les chameaux.” | 31 He said, "Come in, O blessed of the LORD; why do you stand outside? For I have prepared the house and a place for the camels." |
| 32 L’homme entra donc dans la maison et déchargea les chameaux. On donna de la paille et du fourrage aux chameaux, et on apporta pour l’homme et pour ceux qui étaient avec lui, de l’eau pour se laver les pieds. | 32 So the man came into the house; and Laban ungirded the camels, and gave him straw and provender for the camels, and water to wash his feet and the feet of the men who were with him. |
| 33 Ensuite on lui présenta de quoi manger, mais il dit: “Je ne mangerai pas tant que je n’aurai pas dit ce que j’ai à dire.” On lui répondit: “Parle!” | 33 Then food was set before him to eat; but he said, "I will not eat until I have told my errand." He said, "Speak on." |
| 34 Il dit: “Je suis le serviteur d’Abraham. | 34 So he said, "I am Abraham's servant. |
| 35 Yahvé a comblé mon maître de ses bénédictions et il est devenu riche. Yahvé lui a donné du petit bétail et du gros bétail, de l’argent, de l’or, des serviteurs et des servantes, des chameaux et des ânes. | 35 The LORD has greatly blessed my master, and he has become great; he has given him flocks and herds, silver and gold, menservants and maidservants, camels and asses. |
| 36 Et Sara, la femme de mon maître, alors qu’elle était déjà vieille, a donné un fils à mon maître et celui-ci lui donne tout ce qui lui appartient. | 36 And Sarah my master's wife bore a son to my master when she was old; and to him he has given all that he has. |
| 37 Or mon maître m’a fait prêter ce serment: ‘Tu ne prendras pas comme femme pour mon fils une fille de ces Cananéens au milieu desquels j’habite, | 37 My master made me swear, saying, 'You shall not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites, in whose land I dwell; |
| 38 mais tu iras dans la maison de mon père, dans ma parenté, et là tu trouveras une femme pour mon fils.’ | 38 but you shall go to my father's house and to my kindred, and take a wife for my son.' |
| 39 J’ai dit alors à mon maître: ‘La femme ne voudra peut-être pas me suivre.’ | 39 I said to my master, 'Perhaps the woman will not follow me.' |
| 40 Mais il m’a répondu: ‘Yahvé, celui que j’ai servi, enverra son ange avec toi et fera réussir ton voyage. Tu prendras pour mon fils une femme dans ma parenté, dans la maison de mon père. | 40 But he said to me, 'The LORD, before whom I walk, will send his angel with you and prosper your way; and you shall take a wife for my son from my kindred and from my father's house; |
| 41 Dès le moment où tu seras arrivé dans ma famille, tu seras quitte de ton engagement. Et même si l’on te refuse cette femme, tu seras quitte de ton serment.’ | 41 then you will be free from my oath, when you come to my kindred; and if they will not give her to you, you will be free from my oath.' |
| 42 “Aussi, quand je suis arrivé aujourd’hui à la source, j’ai dit: ‘Yahvé, Dieu de mon maître Abraham, accorde-moi la réussite de ce voyage que j’ai entrepris.’ | 42 "I came today to the spring, and said, 'O LORD, the God of my master Abraham, if now thou wilt prosper the way which I go, |
| 43 Je vais rester là près de la source, et je vais dire à l’une des jeunes filles qui sortent pour puiser: ‘Veux-tu me donner un peu d’eau pour boire, s’il te plaît.’ | 43 behold, I am standing by the spring of water; let the young woman who comes out to draw, to whom I shall say, "Pray give me a little water from your jar to drink," |
| 44 Et si la jeune fille me répond: ‘Bois, et je donnerai aussi à boire à tes chameaux,’ fais que cette jeune fille soit la femme que Yahvé a destinée au fils de mon maître. | 44 and who will say to me, "Drink, and I will draw for your camels also," let her be the woman whom the LORD has appointed for my master's son.' |
| 45 “Je parlais encore en moi-même lorsque Rébecca est sortie de la ville, sa cruche sur l’épaule. Quand elle est descendue à la source pour puiser, je lui ai dit: ‘Donne-moi à boire, s’il te plaît.’ | 45 "Before I had done speaking in my heart, behold, Rebekah came out with her water jar on her shoulder; and she went down to the spring, and drew. I said to her, 'Pray let me drink.' |
| 46 Vite, elle a descendu la cruche de son épaule et m’a dit: ‘Bois, je donnerai aussi à boire à tes chameaux.’ J’ai bu et elle a donné à boire à mes chameaux. | 46 She quickly let down her jar from her shoulder, and said, 'Drink, and I will give your camels drink also.' So I drank, and she gave the camels drink also. |
| 47 Je l’ai interrogée: ‘De qui es-tu la fille?’ Elle m’a répondu: ‘Je suis la fille de Bétuel fils de Nahor, celui que lui a enfanté Milka.’ Alors j’ai mis l’anneau à sa narine et les bracelets à ses bras. | 47 Then I asked her, 'Whose daughter are you?' She said, The daughter of Bethuel, Nahor's son, whom Milcah bore to him.' So I put the ring on her nose, and the bracelets on her arms. |

J’ai béni Yahvé, Dieu de mon maître Abraham, qui m’a mis sur le bon chemin et m’a fait trouver pour son fils la fille du frère de mon maître. | 48 Then I bowed my head and worshiped the LORD, and blessed the LORD, the God of my master Abraham, who had led me by the right way to take the daughter of my master's kinsman for his son. |
| 49 Maintenant donc, si vous êtes bien disposés à mon égard et voulez faire une faveur à mon maître, dites-le-moi. Sinon, dites-le-moi aussi et j’irai voir ailleurs.” | 49 Now then, if you will deal loyally and truly with my master, tell me; and if not, tell me; that I may turn to the right hand or to the left." |
| 50 Laban et Bétuel répondirent: “Cette affaire vient de Yahvé, nous n’avons rien à ajouter. | 50 Then Laban and Bethuel answered, "The thing comes from the LORD; we cannot speak to you bad or good. |
| 51 Voici Rébecca; si tu la veux, prends-la et va. Qu’elle soit la femme du fils de ton maître, comme Yahvé l’a décidé.” | 51 Behold, Rebekah is before you, take her and go, and let her be the wife of your master's son, as the LORD has spoken." |
| 52 Lorsque le serviteur d’Abraham entendit ces paroles, il se prosterna à terre devant Yahvé. | 52 When Abraham's servant heard their words, he bowed himself to the earth before the LORD. |
| 53 Puis le serviteur sortit des bijoux d’argent et des bijoux d’or, ainsi que des vêtements, et il les donna à Rébecca. Il fit également de magnifiques cadeaux à son frère et à sa mère. | 53 And the servant brought forth jewelry of silver and of gold, and raiment, and gave them to Rebekah; he also gave to her brother and to her mother costly ornaments. |
| 54 Lui et les hommes qui étaient avec lui mangèrent, burent, et restèrent là pour la nuit. Lorsqu’ils se levèrent de bon matin, le serviteur dit: “Laissez-moi partir vers mon maître.” | 54 And he and the men who were with him ate and drank, and they spent the night there. When they arose in the morning, he said, "Send me back to my master." |
| 55 Le frère et la mère de Rébecca lui répondirent: “Que la jeune fille reste avec nous quelques jours encore, une dizaine de jours, après quoi elle partira.” | 55 Her brother and her mother said, "Let the maiden remain with us a while, at least ten days; after that she may go." |
| 56 Le serviteur leur dit: “Ne me retardez pas maintenant que Yahvé a fait réussir mon voyage. Laissez-moi partir pour que je retourne vers mon maître.” | 56 But he said to them, "Do not delay me, since the LORD has prospered my way; let me go that I may go to my master." |
| 57 Ils dirent: “Appelons la jeune fille et demandons-lui son avis.” | 57 They said, "We will call the maiden, and ask her." |
| 58 Ils appelèrent donc Rébecca et lui dirent: “Veux-tu partir avec cet homme?” Elle répondit: “Oui.” | 58 And they called Rebekah, and said to her, "Will you go with this man?" She said, "I will go." |
| 59 Ils laissèrent donc partir leur sœur Rébecca et sa nourrice, avec le serviteur d’Abraham et ses compagnons. | 59 So they sent away Rebekah their sister and her nurse, and Abraham's servant and his men. |
| 60 Ils bénirent Rébecca avec ces mots: “Ô notre sœur! puisses-tu devenir des milliers de myriades, et que ta descendance s’empare des places fortes de tes ennemis!” | 60 And they blessed Rebekah, and said to her, "Our sister, be the mother of thousands of ten thousands; and may your descendants possess the gate of those who hate them!" |
| 61 Rébecca se leva avec ses servantes, elles montèrent sur les chameaux et suivirent l’homme. C’est ainsi que le serviteur ramena avec lui Rébecca. | 61 Then Rebekah and her maids arose, and rode upon the camels and followed the man; thus the servant took Rebekah, and went his way. |
| 62 Isaac revenait du puits de Lahaï-Roï, car il habitait au Négueb. | 62 Now Isaac had come from Beer-lahai-roi, and was dwelling in the Negeb. |
| 63 Comme Isaac sortait pour se promener dans la campagne, à la tombée du jour, il leva les yeux et vit des chameaux qui arrivaient. | 63 And Isaac went out to meditate in the field in the evening; and he lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, there were camels coming. |
| 64 Rébecca elle aussi leva les yeux, et à la vue d’Isaac elle sauta en bas de son chameau. | 64 And Rebekah lifted up her eyes, and when she saw Isaac, she alighted from the camel, |
| 65 Elle dit au serviteur: “Qui est cet homme qui vient à travers champs à notre rencontre?” Le serviteur répondit: “C’est mon maître.” Alors elle prit son voile et s’en couvrit le visage. | 65 and said to the servant, "Who is the man yonder, walking in the field to meet us?" The servant said, "It is my master." So she took her veil and covered herself. |
| 66 Le serviteur raconta à Isaac tout ce qu’il avait fait, | 66 And the servant told Isaac all the things that he had done. |
| 67 après quoi Isaac fit entrer Rébecca dans la tente qui avait appartenu à Sara sa mère. Il la prit, elle devint sa femme et il l’aima. Isaac se consola ainsi de la mort de sa mère. | 67 Then Isaac brought her into the tent, and took Rebekah, and she became his wife; and he loved her. So Isaac was comforted after his mother's death. |
