| 1 E nel detto tempo il re Erode mise mano ad affliggere certi principali della chiesa (di Cristo). | 1 About that time Herod the king laid violent hands upon some who belonged to the church. |
| 2 E fece tagliare la testa (a santo) Iacobo, fratello di (santo) Giovanni. | 2 He killed James the brother of John with the sword; |
| 3 E vedendo che ciò piaceva a' giudei, procurò di fare pigliare eziandio Pietro in su li dì della pasca. | 3 and when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread. |
| 4 E preso ch' ebbe, lo mise in pregione, e diello in guardia a XVI cavalieri, volendo dopo la pasca producerlo (e giudicarlo) dinanzi al popolo. | 4 And when he had seized him, he put him in prison, and delivered him to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people. |
| 5 E stando così Pietro in pregione, tutta la chiesa (cioè tutti li fedeli) facevano a Dio orazione per lui senza intermissione. | 5 So Peter was kept in prison; but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church. |
| 6 Or avvenne che in quella notte, che il dì seguente Erode intendeva di producerlo (al popolo in pubblico per condannarlo), stando Pietro e dormendo intra due berrovieri, legato con due catene; e molte altre guardie stavano all' uscio della pregione; | 6 The very night when Herod was about to bring him out, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison; |
| 7 ecco, subitamente apparve l'angelo di Dio, con tanto lume che tutta la pregione illuminò; e percuotendo Pietro dall' uno lato, sì lo svegliò e disseli: sta su incontanente. E svegliandosi, si trovò le mani sue sciolte dalle catene. | 7 and behold, an angel of the Lord appeared, and a light shone in the cell; and he struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, "Get up quickly." And the chains fell off his hands. |
| 8 Allora l'angelo li disse: vèstiti e càlzati. Ed elli così fece. E l'angelo li disse: circòndati il tuo vestimento, e sèguitami. | 8 And the angel said to him, "Dress yourself and put on your sandals." And he did so. And he said to him, "Wrap your mantle around you and follow me." |
| 9 Ed elli così facendo il seguitava, e non sapea per verità quello che l' angelo si faceva; ma parevali quasi uno sogno ovvero visione. | 9 And he went out and followed him; he did not know that what was done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. |
| 10 E così (andando e) passando la prima e la seconda guardia, pervennero alla porta di ferro che mena alla città; la quale miracolosamente (sùbito) fu aperta a loro. E uscendo fuori (della porta), passorono una certa via; e subito l'angelo disparve. | 10 When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. It opened to them of its own accord, and they went out and passed on through one street; and immediately the angel left him. |
| 11 E allora Pietro, tornando in sè, disse: ora m' avveggio per verità, che il Signore mandò l'angelo suo, e hammi liberato delle mani di Erode, e del giudizio che li Iudei aspettavano (che facesse · di me). | 11 And Peter came to himself, and said, "Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting." |
| 12 E considerando (così liberato) andò a casa di (una cristiana che avea nome) Maria ch' era madre di (uno delli discepoli il cui nome era) Giovanni, (ma era) chiamato Marco; nella quale casa molti (cristiani) erano raunati e stavano in orazione (per lui). | 12 When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying. |
| 13 E picchiando elli all' uscio, venne una giovenetta, che avea nome Rode, per aprire. | 13 And when he knocked at the door of the gateway, a maid named Rhoda came to answer. |
| 14 E conoscendo la voce di Pietro, per la grande allegrezza non gli aperse, ma tornò adrieto, e disse (a quelli cristiani li quali erano dentro congregati) che Pietro era quello che picchiava all'uscio. | 14 Recognizing Peter's voice, in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and told that Peter was standing at the gate. |
| 15 La quale cosa quelli non credendo, (per che sapevano ch' egli era messo in pregione) sì li dissono: tu se' fuori di senno. Ma quella pure affermava, che ciò era vero. Allora quelli dissero: forse che sarà l'angelo suo. | 15 They said to her, "You are mad." But she insisted that it was so. They said, "It is his angel!" |
| 16 Ma Pietro pure perseverava di picchiare (all'uscio). Onde egli, aprendogli e vedendo ch' era desso, maraviglioronsi molto. | 16 But Peter continued knocking; and when they opened, they saw him and were amazed. |
| 17 E facendo Pietro cenno con mano ch' egli tacessero, narrò loro il modo come era uscito di pregione, e pregolli che questo fatto tosto facessero sapere a (santo) Iacobo ( ch' era vescovo in Ierusalem) e agli altri apostoli. E poi egli (incontanente) si partì, e andossene in uno altro luogo (la notte medesima). | 17 But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, "Tell this to James and to the brethren." Then he departed and went to another place. |
| 18 E fatto che fu giorno, li (cavalieri e) soldati (che guardavano la pregione, non trovando) vennero in mirabile turbazione (e questione), non sapendo che fatto ne fusse. | 18 Now when day came, there was no small stir among the soldiers over what had become of Peter. |
| 19 E ciò sentendo Erode, fecelo cercare (per molte parti), e non trovandolo fece grande inquisizione sopra le guardie; e poi partendosi da Ierusalem, e andando in Cesarea, quivi stette alquanti tempi. | 19 And when Herod had sought for him and could not find him, he examined the sentries and ordered that they should be put to death. Then he went down from Judea to Caesarea, and remained there. |
| 20 Ed essendo Erode turbato contra a quelli di Tiro e di Sidonia (per certa cagione), quelli temendo vennero a lui (concordevolmente e con molta umiltà); e prendendo per avvocato (e procuratore) il cameriere di Erode, che aveva nome Blasto, procuravano di tornare nella grazia del re; perciò che senza lui non avevano di che vivere nelle loro contrade. | 20 Now Herod was angry with the people of Tyre and Sidon; and they came to him in a body, and having persuaded Blastus, the king's chamberlain, they asked for peace, because their country depended on the king's country for food. |
| 21 Or avvenne che uno giorno (d' una grande festa) Erode, vestendosi di vestimenti regali, sedette per tribunale, e ragionava insieme con loro. | 21 On an appointed day Herod put on his royal robes, took his seat upon the throne, and made an oration to them. |
| 22 E il popolo (per piacerli) cominciò a lodare (e a millantare) dicendo, come elli pareva Iddio, e non uomo; (le quali vane lodi quello, come superbo, volentieri udiva). | 22 And the people shouted, "The voice of a god, and not of man!" |
| 23 Incontinente l'angelo di Dio il percosse per che usurpava la gloria di Dio, (dilettandosi d'essere chiamato e reputato Iddio); e consunto da' vermi, (e corrompendosi tutto il suo corpo, dopo pochi giorni) morì miseramente. | 23 Immediately an angel of the Lord smote him, because he did not give God the glory; and he was eaten by worms and died. |
| 24 Il fervore della predicazione delli fedeli continuamente cresceva. | 24 But the word of God grew and multiplied. |
| 25 E (dopo queste cose) Barnaba e Saulo, compiuto loro ministerio (il perchè mandati furono), tornorono da Ierusalem, menando con loro Giovanni il quale era cognominato Marco. | 25 And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem when they had fulfilled their mission, bringing with them John whose other name was Mark. |
