1 Or i figli di Ruben e di Gad, che avevano molto gregge ed immensa dovizia di bestiame, avendo veduto come le terre di Iazer e di Galaad erano atte ai pascoli,	1 Now the Reubenites and Gadites had a very large number of livestock. Noticing that the land of Jazer and of Gilead was grazing country,
2 si presentarono a Mosè, al sacerdote Eleazaro ed ai principi della moltitudine e dissero:	2 they came to Moses and the priest Eleazar and to the princes of the community and said,
3 « Atarot, Dibon, Iazer, Nemra, Esebon, Eleale, Saban, Nebo e Beon,	3 "The region of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Baal-meon,
4 terre dal Signore colpite davanti ai figli d'Israele, son floridissime di pascoli, e noi tuoi sia vi abbiamo numeroso bestiame;	4 which the LORD has laid low before the community of Israel, is grazing country. Now, since your servants have livestock,"
5 Ti preghiamo adunque, se abbiamo trovata grazia, dinanzi a te, di darla in possesso ai tuoi servi, senza farci passare il Giordano ».	5 they continued, "if we find favor with you, let this land be given to your servants as their property. Do not make us cross the Jordan."
6 Mosè rispose loro: « Dovrebbero dunque andare alla guerra i vostri fratelli, mentre voi ve ne starete qui in riposo?	6 But Moses answered the Gadites and Reubenites: "Are your kinsmen, then, to engage in war, while you remain here?
7 Perché scoraggiate i figli d'Israele, togliendo loro l'ardire di passar nel paese che il Signore darà loro?	7 Why do you wish to discourage the Israelites from crossing to the land the LORD has given them?
8 Non fecero così i vostri padri, quando io da Cadesbarne mandai ad esplorare il paese?	8 That is just what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh-barnea to reconnoiter the land.
9 Dopo esser giunti fino alla valle del Grappolo ed aver girato tutto il paese, scoraggiarono i figli d'Israele in modo da non farli entrare nella terra che loro diede il Signore.	9 They went up to the Wadi Eshcol and reconnoitered the land, then so discouraged the Israelites that they would not enter the land the LORD had given them.
10 Il quale, sdegnato, giurò e disse:	10 At that time the wrath of the LORD flared up, and he swore,
11 « Da venti anni in su, questi uomini usciti dall'Egitto non vedranno la, terra, da, me promessa, con giuramento ad Abramo, ad Isacco e a Giacobbe; perche non mi han voluto seguire,	11 'Because they have not followed me unreservedly, none of these men of twenty years or more who have come up from Egypt shall ever see this country I promised under oath to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob,
12 eccetto Caleb figlio di Cenezeo e Giosuè figlio di Nun, i quali hanno adempiuto la mia volontà ».	12 except the Kenizzite Caleb, son of Jephunneh, and Joshua, son of Nun, who have followed the LORD unreservedly.'
13 Sdegnato contro Israele, il Signore lo ha fatto andare errando pel deserto quarant'anni, fino a tanto che non fosse consumata, quella generazione che aveva fatto il male dinanzi a lui.	13 So in his anger with the Israelites the LORD made them wander in the desert forty years, until the whole generation that had done evil in the sight of the LORD had died out.
14 « Ed ecco ora, sorger voi in luogo dei vostri padri, rampolli e schiatta di uomini peccatori, ad accrescere il furor del Signori, contro Israele.	14 And now here you are, a brood of sinners, rising up in your fathers' place to add still more to the LORD'S blazing wrath against the Israelites.
15 Se voi non volete seguirlo, egli abbandonerà il popolo nel deserto, e sarete la causa dello sterminio di tutti ».	15 If you turn away from following him, he will make them stay still longer in the desert, and so you will bring about the ruin of this whole nation."
16 Ma essi, accostandosi più da vicino dissero: « Noi costruiremo dei recinti per le pecore, delle stalle per i bestiami e delle città fortificate per i vostri figlioli;	16 But they were insistent with him: "We wish only to build sheepfolds here for our flocks, and towns for our families;
17 ma poi armati e in ordine combatteremo alla testa dei figli d'Israele, fino a che non li avremo introdotti nei luoghi loro. I nostri figlioli e tutto ciò che possiamo avere resteranno nelle città fortificate, a causa delle insidie degli abitanti.	17 but we ourselves will march as troops in the van of the Israelites, until we have led them to their destination. Meanwhile our families can remain here in the fortified towns, safe from attack by the natives.
18 Non torneremo alle nostre case,finché i figli d'Israele non siano in possesso della loro eredità;	18 We will not return to our homes until every one of the Israelites has taken possession of his heritage,
19 e non cercheremo nulla al di là del Giordano, perchè abbiamo già la nostra parte ad oriente di esso».	19 and will not claim any heritage with them once we cross the Jordan, so long as we receive a heritage for ourselves on this eastern side of the Jordan."
20 Mosè rispose loro: « Se fate quanto promettete, se andate pronti alla battaglia davanti al Signore,	20 Moses said to them in reply: "If you keep your word to march as troops in the LORD'S vanguard
21 se ogni guerriero passa il Giordano, finche il Signore non abbia distrutti i suoi nemici	21 and to cross the Jordan in full force before the LORD until he has driven his enemies out of his way
22 e assoggettata tutta quella terra, allora voi sarete senza colpa davanti al Signore e a Israele, e il paese che desiderate sarà di vostra proprietà davanti al Signore.	22 and the land is subdued before him, then you may return here, quit of every obligation to the LORD and to Israel, and this region shall be your possession before the LORD.
23 Ma se non farete quanto dite, senza dubbio peccherete contro il Signore, e sappiate che il vostro peccato vi arriverà.	23 But if you do not do this, you will sin against the LORD, and you can be sure that you will not escape the consequences of your sin.
24 Edificate adunque delle città per i vostri figli, dei recinti e delle stalle per le pecore e per i bestiami, e poi adempite la vostra promessa ».	24 Build the towns, then, for your families, and the folds for your flocks, but also fulfill your express promise."
25 E i figli di Gad e di Ruben dissero a Mosè: « Noi siamo tuoi servi, e faremo quanto il nostro Signore comanda:	25 The Gadites and Reubenites answered Moses, "Your servants will do as you command, my lord.
26 lasciati i nostri figli, le donne, i greggi e i bestiami nelle città di Galaad,	26 While our wives and children, our herds and other livestock remain in the towns of Gilead,
27 noi tutti, tuoi servi, andremo armati alla guerra come tu, o Signore, dici ».	27 all your servants will go across as armed troops to battle before the LORD, just as your lordship says."
28 Allora Mosè, dando gli ordini al sacerdote Eleazaro, a Giosuè figlio di Nun e ai capi delle famiglie delle tribù d'Israele, disse loro:	28 Moses, therefore, gave this order in their regard to the priest Eleazar, to Joshua, son of Nun, and to the heads of the ancestral tribes of the Israelites:
29 « Se i figli di Gad e i figli di Ruben, tutti armati per combattere davanti al Signore, passeranno con voi il Giordano, quando avrete assoggettato il paese, date loro come proprietà la terra di Galaad;	29 "If all the Gadites and Reubenites cross the Jordan with you as combat troops before the LORD, you shall give them Gilead as their property when the land has been subdued before you.
30 ma se non vorran passare armati con voi nella terra di Canaan, abbian tra voi la loro dimora ».	30 But if they will not go across with you as combat troops before the LORD, you shall bring their wives and children and livestock across before you into Canaan, and they shall have their property with you in the land of Canaan."
31 Il figli di Gad e di Ruben risposero: «Faremo come il Signore ha detto ai suoi servi:	31 To this the Gadites and Reubenites replied, "We will do what the LORD has commanded us, your servants.
32 andremo armati davanti al Signore nella terra di Canaan, riconoscendo d'aver già ricevuta la nostra porzione di qua dal Giordano ».	32 We ourselves will go across into the land of Canaan as troops before the LORD, but we will retain our hereditary property on this side of the Jordan."
33 Mosè adunque diede ai figli di Gad, ai figli di Ruben e alla metà della tribù di Manasse, figlio di Giuseppe, il regno di Sehon re degli Amorrei e il regno di Og re di Basan: la loro terra colle città e dintorni.	33 So Moses gave them (the Gadites and Reubenites, as well as half the tribe of Manasseh, son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon, king of the Amorites, and the kingdom of Og, king of Bashan,) the land with its towns and the districts that surrounded them.
34 Cosi i figli di Gad riedificarono Dibon, Ataron, Aroer,	34 The Gadites rebuilt the fortified towns of Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,
35 Etrot, Sofan, Tazer, legbaa,	35 Atroth-shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,
36 Betnemra e Betaran: città forti e recinti per i loro bestiami.	36 Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran, and they built sheepfolds.
37 E i figli di Ruben edificarono Esebon, Eleale, Cariatami,	37 The Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,
38 Nabo, Baalmeon, con nomi cambiati, e Sabama, e posero i nomi loro alle città edificate.	38 Nebo, Baal-meon (names to be changed!), and Sibmah. These towns, which they rebuilt, they called by their old names.
39 Poi i figli di Machir, figlio di Manasse, andarono nella terra di Galaad, la devastarono e uccisero gli Amorrei che l'abitavano.	39 The descendants of Machir, son of Manasseh, invaded Gilead and captured it, driving out the Amorites who were there.
40 E Mosè diede la terra dì Galaad a Machir, figlio di Manasse, che l'abitò.	40 (Moses gave Gilead to Machir, son of Manasseh, and he settled there.)
41 Anche Iair, figlio di Manasse, andò ed occupò i suoi villaggi, ai quali diede il nome di Havot-Iair, cioè villaggi di Iair.	41 Jair, a Manassehite clan, campaigned against the tent villages, captured them and called them Havvoth-jair.
42 Anche Nobe andò e prese Canai coi suoi villaggi, e le diede il suo nome di Nobe.	42 Nobah also campaigned against Kenath, captured it with its dependencies and called it Nobah after his own name.
