1 Ma Simone inteso che Trifone aveva radunato un grande esercito per entrare nella terra di Giuda e desolarla,	1 Simon heard that Trypho had col ected a large army to invade and devastate Judaea,
2 visto che la gente era impaurita e tremante, andò a Gerusalemme, adunò il popolo,	2 and when he saw how the people were quaking with fear, he went up to Jerusalem, cal ed the peopletogether,
3 li rianimò e disse: « Voi sapete quanto io, i miei fratelli e la casa di mio padre abbiam combattuto per la legge, pel santuario, e in quali angustie ci siamo trovati.	3 and exhorted them thus, 'You know yourselves how much I and my brothers and my father's familyhave done for the laws and the sanctuary; you know what wars and hardships we have experienced.
4 Per questa causa, per Israele son periti tutti i miei fratelli, e son rimasto io solo.	4 That is why my brothers are all dead, for Israel's sake, and I am the only one left.
5 Or non sia mai ch'io risparmi la mia vita, qualunque sia il tempo dell'afflizione, perchè io non valgo più dei miei fratelli.	5 Far be it from me, then, to be sparing of my own life in any time of oppression, for I am not worth morethan my brothers.
6 Io dunque difenderò il mio popolo, il santuario, i nostri figli e le nostre mogli, or che tutte le genti, per l'odio che ci portano, si sono unite per distruggerci ».	6 Rather wil I avenge my nation and the sanctuary and your wives and children, now that the foreignersare al united in malice to destroy us.'
7 A queste parole s'infiammò lo spirito del popolo,	7 The people's spirit rekindled as they listened to his words,
8 e risposero ad alta voce: « Tu sei il nostro duce in luogo di Giuda e di Gionata tuoi fratelli:	8 and they shouted back at him, 'You are our leader in place of Judas and your brother Jonathan.
9 combatti per noi, che obbediremo ad ogni tuo comando ».	9 Fight our battles for us, and we wil do whatever you tel us.'
10 Allora Simone, radunati tutti i guerrieri, si affrettò a terminare tutte le mura di Gerusalemme, e la fortificò da tutte le parti;	10 So he assembled al the fighting men and hurried on with completing the wal s of Jerusalem,fortifying the whole perimeter.
11 poi mandò Gionata figlio di Absalom a loppe con nuovi eserciti, e, cacciati quelli che vi eran dentro, vi si fermò.	11 He sent a considerable force to Joppa under Jonathan son of Absalom who drove out the inhabitantsand remained there in occupation.
12 E Trifone partì con numeroso esercito da Tolemaide per invadere la terra di Giuda, menando seco Gionata prigioniero.	12 Trypho now left Ptolemais with a large army to invade Judaea, taking Jonathan with him underguard.
13 Simone pose il campo a Addus, di faccia alla pianura.	13 Simon pitched camp in Adida, facing the plain.
14 Quando Trifone seppe che Simone era sorto al posto del suo fratello Gionata, e che era pronto per dargli battaglia, gli mandò ambasciatori a fargli	14 When Trypho learned that Simon had taken the place of his brother Jonathan and that he intendedto join battle with him, he sent envoys to him with this message,
15 dire: « È per l'argento di cui era debitore al tesoro del re per ragione degli affari da lui amministrati che noi abbiamo ritenuto prigioniero Gionata tuo fratello.	15 'Your brother Jonathan was in debt to the royal exchequer for the offices he held; that is why we aredetaining him.
16 Or tu manda cento talenti d'argento e i due suoi figli in ostaggio, affinchè, liberato, non abbandoni il nostro partito, e noi lo rimanderemo ».	16 If you send a hundred talents of silver and two of his sons as hostages, to make sure that on hisrelease he does not revolt against us, we shal release him.'
17 Simone ben comprese che (Trifone) gli parlava con frode, non ostante ordinò di consegnare il danaro e i fanciulli, per non tirarsi addosso l'inimicizia del popolo, che avrebbe detto:	17 Although Simon was aware that the message was a ruse, he sent for the money and the boys forfear of incurring great hostility from the people,
18 « Perchè non ha mandato il danaro e i fanciulli,per questo (Gionata) è morto ».	18 who would have said that Jonathan had died because Simon would not send Trypho the money andthe children.
19 Mandò dunque i fanciulli e i cento talenti; ma (Trifone) mancò di parola, e non rimise in libertà Gionata.	19 He therefore sent both the boys and the hundred talents, but Trypho broke his word and did notrelease Jonathan.
20 In seguito Trifone si avanzò mila regione per devastarla, e presero la via che mena ad Ador, ma Simone col suo esercito teneva loro dietro, dovunque andassero.	20 Next, Trypho set about the invasion and devastation of the country; he made a detour along theAdora road, but Simon and his army confronted him wherever he attempted to go.
21 Or quelli che erano nella cittadella mandarono a dire a Trifone che s'affrettasse a venir dalla parte del deserto, e mandasse loro dei viveri.	21 The men in the Citadel kept sending messengers to Trypho, urging him to get through to them byway of the desert and send them supplies.
22 E Trifone mise in ordine tutta la cavalleria, per arrivare in quella notte; ma essendo la neve molto alta, non potè entrare nella terra di Galaad.	22 Trypho organised his entire cavalry to go, but that night it snowed so heavily that he could not getthrough for the snow, so he left there and moved off into Gilead.
23 Quando fu vicino a Bsacaman, vi uccise Gionata e i suoi figlioli;	23 As he approached Baskama he kil ed Jonathan, who was buried there.
24 poi Trifone si volse indietro e tornò al suo paese.	24 Trypho turned back and regained his own country.
25 E Simone mandò a prendere le ossa di Gionata suo fratello, e le seppellì in Modin, città dei suoi padri.	25 Simon sent and recovered the bones of his brother Jonathan, and buried him in Modein, the town ofhis ancestors.
26 E tutto Israele fece gran duolo per Gionata, e lo pianse per molti giorni.	26 Al Israel kept solemn mourning for him and long bewailed him.
27 E sopra il sepolcro di suo padre e dei suoi fratelli, Simone innalzò un fabbricato da vedersi (da lontano) di pietra tagliata, tanto davanti che di dietro.	27 Over the tomb of his father and brothers, Simon raised a monument high enough to catch the eye,using dressed stone back and front.
28 E vi collocò sette piramidi; l'una di faccia all'altra, al padre, alla madre e ai quattro fratelli.	28 He erected seven pyramids facing each other, for his father and mother and his four brothers,
29 E intorno ad esse pose delle grandi colonne, e sopra le colonne delle armi, ad eterna memoria, e presso le armi delle navi scolpite, da esser vedute da tutti quelli che navigassero quel mare.	29 surrounding them with a structure consisting of tal columns surmounted by trophies of arms to theireverlasting memory and, beside the trophies of arms, ships sculpted on a scale to be seen by al who sail thesea.
30 Tale è fino al giorno d'oggi il sepolcro che egli fece in Modin. Simone si riavvicina al re Demetrio II.	30 Such was the monument he constructed at Modein, and it is stil there today.
31 Or Trifone, essendo in viaggio col giovane re Antioco, lo uccise a tradimento,	31 Now Trypho, betraying the trust of young King Antiochus, put him to death.
32 e regnò in sua vece, si cinse di diadema dell'Asia e riempì il paese di stragi.	32 He usurped his throne, assuming the crown of Asia, and brought great havoc on the country.
33 Ma Simone riparò le fortezze della Giudea, e le munì di alte torri, di grandi mura, di porte e di sbarre, e pose dei viveri nelle fortezze.	33 Simon built up the fortresses of Judaea, surrounding them with high towers, great wal s and gateswith bolts, and stocked these fortresses with food.
34 Poi Simone, scelti degli uomini, li mandò al re Demetrio, a pregarlo di concedere l'immunità al paese, perchè tutti gli atti di Trifone avevano avuto per fine il latrocinio.	34 He also sent a delegation to King Demetrius, to get him to grant the province a remission, since alTrypho did was to despoil.
35 E il re Demetrio rispose a tale richiesta, e scrisse la seguente lettera:	35 King Demetrius replied to his request in a letter framed as fol ows:
36 « Il re Demetrio a Simone, sommo sacerdote, amico dei re, e agli anziani e alla nazione dei Giudei, salute.	36 'King Demetrius to Simon, high priest and Friend of Kings, and to the elders and nation of the Jews,greetings.
37 Abbiamo ricevuto la corona d'oro e la palma da voi mandata, e siamo disposti a fare con voi una gran pace, e a scrivere agli agenti del re di condonarvi quello che noi vi abbiamo condonato.	37 'It has pleased us to accept the golden crown and the palm you have sent us, and we are disposedto make a general peace with you, and to write to the officials to grant you remissions.
38 Tutto quello che vi abbiamo concesso resta stabilito: le fortezze da voi edificate siano vostre.	38 Everything that we have decreed concerning you remains in force, and the fortresses you have builtmay remain in your hands.
39 Vi condoniamo anche le dimenticanze, le offese, fino a questo giorno, e la corona che dovevate dare, e se vi fosse qualche altro tributo in Gerusalemme, non esista più come tributo.	39 We pardon all offences, unwitting or intentional, hitherto committed, and remit the crown tax you nowowe us; and whatever other taxes were levied in Jerusalem are no longer to be levied.
40 E se vi è tra voi qualcuno capace di essere arruolato nelle nostre milizie, si arruoli, e regni tra di noi la pace ».	40 If any of you are suitable for enrolment in our bodyguard, let them be enrol ed, and let there bepeace between us.'
41 L'anno centosettanta, Israele scosse il giogo dei Greci,	41 The gentile yoke was thus lifted from Israel in the year 170,
42 e il popolo cominciò a scrivere sugli atti e i contratti: « Nell'anno primo, sotto Simone sommo sacerdote, gran duce e principe dei Giudei ».	42 when our people began engrossing their documents and contracts: 'In the first year of Simon,eminent high priest, commander-in-chief and ethnarch of the Jews'.
43 In quel tempo Simone andò contro Gaza, la circondò coll'esercito, alzò le macchine e le spinse contro la città, abbattè una torre e la prese.	43 About that time Simon laid siege to Gezer, surrounding it with his troops. He constructed a mobiletower, brought it up to the city, opened a breach in one of the bastions and took it.
44 Allora quelli che erano in una delle macchine entrarono con furia nella città, la quale fu in gran tumulto.	44 The men in the mobile tower sprang out into the city, where great confusion ensued.
45 I cittadini salirono colle mogli e coi figlioli sullo mura, e, colle vesti stracciate, gridavano ad alta voce, scongiurando Simone a conceder loro la pace,	45 The citizens, accompanied by their wives and children, mounted the ramparts with their garmentstorn and loudly implored Simon to make peace with them:
46 e dicevano: « Non ci trattare secondo la nostra malvagità, ma secondo la tua clemenza».	46 'Treat us', they said, 'not as our wickedness deserves, but as your mercy prompts you.'
47 Simone si lasciò piegare, e non li trattò a rigor di guerra; ma però li cacciò dalla città, purificò le case dove erano stati gl'idoli, e poi v'entrò dentro cantando inni di lode al Signore.	47 Simon came to terms with them and stopped the fighting; but he expel ed them from the city, purifiedthe houses which contained idols, and then made his entry with songs of praise.
48 Toltene tutte le immondezze, la fece abitare da gente che osservasse la legge, la fortificò e vi si fece una casa.	48 He banished al impurity from it, settled in it people who observed the Law, and having fortified it,built a residence there for himself.
49 Intanto quelli che stavano nella cittadella di Gerusalemme, non potendo andare e venire nel paese, nè vendere, nè comprare, si ridussero alla fame, e molti di essi morirono di fame.	49 The occupants of the Citadel in Jerusalem, prevented as they were from coming out and going intothe countryside to buy and sel , were in desperate need of food, and numbers of them were being carried off bystarvation.
50 Allora ad alte grida chiesero a Simone la pace, che egli concesse; ma li cacciò di là, e purificò la cittadella dalle immondezze.	50 They begged Simon to make peace with them, and he granted this, though he expel ed them andpurified the Citadel from its pollutions.
51 I Giudei vi entrarono dentro ai ventitré del secondo mese, l'anno centosettant'uno, con rami di palme, cetre, cembali, arpe, e inni e cantici, perchè era stato tolto via un gran nemico da Israele.	51 The Jews made their entry on the twenty-third day of the second month in the year 171, withacclamations and carrying palms, to the sound of lyres, cymbals and harps, chanting hymns and canticles, sincea great enemy had been crushed and thrown out of Israel. Simon made it a day of annual rejoicing.
52 Fu stabilito di festeggiare ogni anno questi giorni con gioia.	52 He fortified the Temple hil on the Citadel side, and took up residence there with his men.
53 Simone fortificò il monte del tempio che era a lato della cittadella, e vi prese dimora coi suoi.	53 Since his son John had come to manhood, Simon appointed him general-in-chief, with his residencein Gezer.
54 Avendo poi riconosciuto che Giovanni suo figliolo era uomo di grande valore, gli dette il comando di tutto l'esercito, con Gazara per residenza.
