Primeira Epístola aos Tessalonicenses 2

SAGRADA BIBLIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Bem sabeis, irmãos, que a nossa ida a vós não foi em vão.	1 You know yourselves, my brothers, that our visit to you has not been pointless.
2 Apesar de maltratados e ultrajados em Filipos, como sabeis, ousamos, confiados em nosso Deus, pregar-vos o Evangelho de Deus em meio de muitas lutas.	2 Although, as you know, we had received rough treatment and insults at Philippi, God gave us thecourage to speak his gospel to you fearlessly, in spite of great opposition.
3 A nossa pregação não provém de erro, nem de intenções fraudulentas, nem de engano.	3 Our encouragement to you does not come from any delusion or impure motives or trickery.
4 Mas, como Deus nos julgou dignos de nos confiar o Evangelho, falamos, não para agradar aos homens, e sim a Deus, que sonda os nossos corações.	4 No, God has approved us to be entrusted with the gospel, and this is how we preach, seeking to pleasenot human beings but God who tests our hearts.
5 Com efeito, nunca usamos de adulação, como sabeis, nem fomos levados por fins interesseiros. Deus é testemunha.	5 Indeed, we have never acted with the thought of flattering anyone, as you know, nor as an excuse forgreed, God is our witness;
6 Não buscamos glórias humanas, nem de vós nem de outros.	6 nor have we ever looked for honour from human beings, either from you or anybody else,
7 Na qualidade de apóstolos de Cristo, poderíamos apresentar-nos como pessoas de autoridade. Todavia, nos fizemos discretos no meio de vós. Como a mãe a acariciar os seus filhinhos,	7 when we could have imposed ourselves on you with full weight, as apostles of Christ. Instead, we livedunassumingly among you. Like a mother feeding and looking after her children,
8 assim, em nossa ternura por vós, desejávamos não só comunicar-vos o Evangelho de Deus, mas até a nossa própria vida, porquanto nos sois muito queridos.	8 we felt so devoted to you, that we would have been happy to share with you not only the gospel of God,but also our own lives, so dear had you become.
9 Vós vos lembrais, irmãos, dos nossos trabalhos e de nossa fadiga. Trabalhando noite e dia, para não sermos pesados a nenhum de vós, pregamo-vos o Evangelho de Deus.	9 You remember, brothers, with what unsparing energy we used to work, slaving night and day so as notto be a burden on any one of you while we were proclaiming the gospel of God to you.
10 Vós sois testemunhas, e também Deus, de quão santa, justa e irrepreensivelmente nos portamos convosco que crestes.	10 You are witnesses, and so is God, that our treatment of you, since you believed, has been impeccablyfair and upright.
11 E sabeis que procedemos com cada um de vós como um pai com seus filhos:	11 As you know, we treated every one of you as a father treats his children,
12 nós vos temos exortado, estimulado, conjurado a vos comportardes de maneira digna de Deus, que vos chama ao seu Reino e à sua glória.	12 urging you, encouraging you and appealing to you to live a life worthy of God, who cal s you into hiskingdom and his glory.
13 Por isso é que também nós não cessamos de dar graças a Deus, porque recebestes a palavra de Deus, que de nós ouvistes, e a acolhestes, não como palavra de homens, mas como aquilo que realmente é, como palavra de Deus, que age eficazmente em vós, os fiéis.	13 Another reason why we continual y thank God for you is that as soon as you heard the word that webrought you as God's message, you welcomed it for what it really is, not the word of any human being, but God'sword, a power that is working among you believers.
14 Com efeito, irmãos, vós vos tornastes imitadores das igrejas de Deus que estão na Judéia, das igrejas de Jesus Cristo. Tivestes que sofrer da parte dos vossos compatriotas o mesmo que eles sofreram dos judeus,	14 For you, my brothers, have model ed yourselves on the churches of God in Christ Jesus which are inJudaea, in that you have suffered the same treatment from your own countrymen as they have had from theJews,
15 aqueles judeus que mataram o Senhor Jesus, que nos perseguiram, que não são do agrado de Deus, que são inimigos de todos os homens,	15 who put the Lord Jesus to death, and the prophets too, and persecuted us also. Their conduct doesnot please God, and makes them the enemies of the whole human race,
16 visto que nos proíbem pregar aos gentios para que se salvem. E com isto vão enchendo sempre mais a medida dos seus pecados. Mas a ira de Deus acabou por atingi-los.	16 because they are hindering us from preaching to gentiles to save them. Thus al the time they arereaching the ful extent of their iniquity, but retribution has final y overtaken them.
17 Nós, irmãos, separados de vós por algum tempo - de vista, não de coração -, temos o mais vivo e ardente desejo de vos rever.	17 Although we had been deprived of you for only a short time in body but never in affection, brothers, wehad an especially strong desire and longing to see you face to face again,
18 Pelo que fizemos o possível por ir visitar-vos, ao menos eu, Paulo, em diversas ocasiões. Mas Satanás nos impediu.	18 and we tried hard to come and visit you; I, Paul, tried more than once, but Satan prevented us.
19 Pois quem, senão vós, será a nossa esperança, a nossa alegria e a nossa coroa de glória ante nosso Senhor Jesus, no dia de sua vinda?	19 What do you think is our hope and our joy, and what our crown of honour in the presence of our LordJesus when he comes?
20 Sim, sois vós a nossa glória e a nossa alegria!	20 You are, for you are our pride and joy.
