LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Avvenne che nei giorni in cui governavano i giudici, ci fu una carestia nella terra d'Israele e un uomo da Betlemme di Giuda se ne andò ad abitare nei campi di Moab, insieme con la moglie e due suoi figli.	1 In the days when the Judges were governing, a famine occurred in the country and a certain man fromBethlehem of Judah went-he, his wife and his two sons -- to live in the Plains of Moab.
2 Il nome dell'uomo era Elimèlech e il nome della moglie Noemi; quello dei suoi due figli Maclon e Chilion, efratei da Betlemme di Giuda. Essi se ne andarono nei campi di Moab e vi si stabilirono.	2 The man was called Elimelech, his wife Naomi and his two sons Mahlon and Chilion; they wereEphrathites from Bethlehem of Judah. Going to the Plains of Moab, they settled there.
3 Morì poi Elimèlech, marito di Noemi, ed ella restò con i suoi due figli.	3 Elimelech, Naomi's husband, died, and she and her two sons were left.
4 Essi presero mogli moabite, di cui una si chiamava Orpa e l'altra Rut. Dimorarono là circa dieci anni e poi	4 These married Moabite women: one was called Orpah and the other Ruth. They lived there for aboutten years.

8 Ma Noemi disse alle due nuore: "Orsù, tornate ciascuna nella casa della vostra madre e sia benigno il Signore con voi come voi lo siete state con i vostri morti e con me.	8 Naomi said to her two daughters-in-law, 'Go back, each of you to your mother's house.
9 Vi conceda il Signore di trovare pace ognuna nella casa del proprio marito". Essa le baciò,	9 May Yahweh show you faithful love, as you have done to those who have died and to me. Yahweh grantthat you may each find happiness with a husband!' She then kissed them, but they began weeping loudly,

11 Noemi disse: "Tornate indietro, figlie mie; perché verreste con me? Ho forse ancora figli nel mio seno che possano essere vostri mariti?	11 'Go home, daughters,' Naomi replied. 'Why come with me? Have I any more sons in my womb to makehusbands for you?
12 Tornate indietro, figlie mie, andate, perché sono troppo vecchia per risposarmi. Infatti anche se dicessi che ho ancora speranza, anche se questa notte stessi con un uomo e avessi dei figli,	12 Go home, daughters, go, for I am now too old to marry again. Even if I said, "I stil have a hope: I shalltake a husband this very night and shal bear more sons,"

Would you refuse to marry for theirsake? No, daughters, I am bitterly sorry for your sakes that the hand of Yahweh should have been raised againstme.'
14 Esse piansero ancora ad alta voce, poi Orpa baciò la suocera e tornò al suo popolo, mentre Rut non si staccò da lei.	14 They started weeping loudly al over again; Orpah then kissed her mother-in-law and went back to herpeople. But Ruth stayed with her.
15 Noemi le disse: "Ecco, tua cognata è tornata al suo popolo e ai suoi dèi; vai anche tu dietro a tua cognata".	15 Naomi then said, 'Look, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her god. Go home, too;fol ow your sister-in-law.'
16 Ma Rut rispose: "Non forzarmi a lasciarti e ad allontanarmi da te, perché dove tu andrai, andrò anch'io e dove tu dimorerai anch'io dimorerò; il tuo popolo sarà il mio popolo e il tuo Dio sarà il mio Dio.	16 But Ruth said, 'Do not press me to leave you and to stop going with you, for wherever you go, I shalgo, wherever you live, I shal live. Your people will be my people, and your God wil be my God.
17 Dove tu morirai, morrò anch'io e là sarò sepolta. 18 Noemi capì che Rut era risoluta a seguirla e cessò di insistere,	18 Seeing that Ruth was determined to go with her, Naomi said no more.
19 e andarono insieme fino a che vennero a Betlemme. Or quando arrivarono a Betlemme, tutta la città si commosse a causa loro e le donne dissero: "Questa è Noemi?".	19 The two of them went on until they came to Bethlehem. Their arrival set the whole town astir, and thewomen said, 'Can this be Naomi?'
20 Essa rispose loro: "Non chiamatemi Noemi, chiamatemi Amarezza, perché l'Onnipotente mi ha inflitto grande amarezza.	20 To this she replied, 'Do not cal me Naomi, cal me Mara, for Shaddai has made my lot bitter.
21 Io me ne sono andata colma di beni e vuota mi ha fatto tornare il Signore. Perché mi chiamate Noemi, quando il Signore è stato testimone contro di me e l'Onnipotente mi ha resa infelice?".	21 I departed ful , and Yahweh has brought me home empty. Why, then, call me Naomi, since Yahwehhas pronounced against me and Shaddai has made me wretched?'
22 Così tornò Noemi con Rut, la moabita, sua nuora, reduce dai campi di Moab. Esse arrivarono a Betlemme al principio del raccolto dell'orzo.	22 This was how Naomi came home with her daughter-in-law, Ruth the Moabitess, on returning from thePlains of Moab. They arrived in Bethlehem at the beginning of the barley harvest.
