Proverbi 23

LA SACRA BIBBIA	NEW JERUSALEM
1 Se tu siedi alla tavola di un capo, stai bene attento a ciò che ti sta davanti;	1 If you take your seat at a great man's table, take careful note of what you have before you;
2 e metti un coltello alla tua gola, se sei uno che ha molto appetito.	2 if you have a big appetite put a knife to your throat.
3 Non bramare le sue pietanze squisite, che sarebbero un cibo ingannatore.	3 Do not hanker for his delicacies, for they are deceptive food.
4 Non ti affannare per accumulare ricchezza, cessa dal pensarci;	4 Do not wear yourself out in quest of wealth, stop applying your mind to this.
5 tu fissi in essa i tuoi occhi e non è più; perché mette ali come aquila che vola verso il cielo.	5 Fix your gaze on it, and it is there no longer, for it is able to sprout wings like an eagle that flies off tothe sky.
6 Non mangiare il pane di un uomo malvagio e non bramare i suoi cibi delicati;	6 Do not eat the food of anyone whose eye is jealous, do not hanker for his delicacies.
7 perché, come pensa nell'animo suo, così egli è; "Mangia e bevi!", ti dice, ma il suo cuore non è con te;	7 For what he is real y thinking about is himself: 'Eat and drink,' he tells you, but his heart is not with you.

10 Non spostare il confine della vedova e non entrare nei campi degli orfani;	10 Do not displace the ancient boundary-stone, or encroach on orphans' lands,
11 perché il loro difensore è potente e difenderà contro di te la loro causa.	11 for they have a powerful avenger, and he will take up their cause against you.
12 Applica il tuo cuore all'istruzione e il tuo orecchio alle parole della scienza.	12 Apply your heart to discipline, and your ears to instructive sayings.
13 Non ricusare al giovane la correzione; se lo colpisci col bastone, non morrà.	13 Do not be chary of correcting a child, a stroke of the cane is not likely to be fatal.
14 Tu dunque col bastone colpiscilo e lo libererai dagli inferi.	14 Give him a stroke of the cane, you wil save his soul from Sheol.
15 Figlio mio, se il tuo cuore è saggio, si allieterà anche il mio stesso cuore;	15 My child, if your heart is wise, then my own heart is glad,
16 giubileranno le mie viscere, se le tue labbra diranno cose rette.	16 and my inmost self rejoices when from your lips come honest words.
17 Non invidi il tuo cuore i peccatori, ma sia ogni giorno nel timor del Signore,	17 Do not let your heart be envious of sinners but remain steady every day in the fear of Yahweh;
18 perché certamente vi sarà un domani e la tua speranza non sarà delusa.	18 for there is a future, and your hope wil not come to nothing.
19 Tu ascolta, figlio mio, e sii saggio e dirigi il tuo cuore nel cammino...	19 Listen, my child, and be wise, and guide your heart in the way.
20 Non stare in mezzo ai bevitori di vino, né tra coloro che si rimpinzano di carne;	20 Do not be one of those forever tippling wine nor one of those who gorge themselves with meat;
21 perché chi si ubriaca e gozzoviglia divien povero e di stracci si veste il sonnolento.	21 for the drunkard and glutton impoverish themselves, and sleepiness is clothed in rags.
22 Ascolta tuo padre che ti ha generato, non disprezzar tua madre, anche se vecchia.	22 Listen to your father from whom you are sprung, do not despise your mother in her old age.
23 Compra la verità, non la rivendere; sapienza, disciplina e intelligenza.	23 Purchase truth -- never sel it-wisdom, discipline, and discernment.
24 Il padre del giusto è pieno d'allegrezza e chi ha generato un saggio ne gioisce.	24 The father of the upright wil rejoice indeed, he who fathers a wise child wil have joy of it.
25 Si rallegri per te tuo padre, esulti colei che ti ha dato la vita.	25 Your father and mother will be happy, and she who bore you joyful.
26 Dammi, figlio mio, il tuo cuore, i tuoi occhi si dilettino delle mie vie.	26 My child, pay attention to me, let your eyes take pleasure in my way:
27 Perché fossa profonda è la prostituta e un pozzo stretto è la donna altrui.	27 a prostitute is a deep pit, a narrow wel , the woman who belongs to another.
28 Proprio come un ladro sta in agguato, fra gli uomini moltiplica i fedifraghi.	28 Yes, like a brigand, she lies in wait, increasing the number of law-breakers.
29 Per chi gli "ohi!", per chi gli "ahimè!"? Per chi le risse, per chi i lamenti? Per chi le ferite senza ragione? Per chi gli occhi turbati?	29 For whom is pity, for whom contempt, for whom is strife, for whom complaint, for whom blows struckat random, for whom the clouded eye?
30 Per chi fa sempre tardi per il vino, per chi va in cerca di vino pregiato.	30 For those who linger over wine too long, ever on the look-out for the blended liquors.
31 Non guardare il vino, perché è rosso, come mostra il suo splendore nella coppa, e va giù così soavemente!	31 Do not gaze at wine, how red it is, how it sparkles in the cup! How smoothly it slips down the throat!
32 Poi alla fine morde come una serpe e come una vipera avvelena!	32 In the end its bite is like a serpent's, its sting as sharp as an adder's.
33 I tuoi occhi vedranno cose strane e il tuo cuore dirà cose sconnesse.	33 Your eyes wil see peculiar things, you will talk nonsense from your heart.
34 Sarai come chi giace in mezzo al mare, chi siede sopra l'albero maestro:	34 You will be like someone sleeping in mid-ocean, like one asleep at the mast-head.
35 "Mi han percosso! Ma io non sento niente! Mi han picchiato! Non me ne sono accorto! Quando mi sveglierò?... Ne domanderò dell'altro!".	35 'Struck me, have they? But I'm not hurt. Beaten me? I don't feel anything. When shal I wake up? . . I'lask for more of it!'
