James, servant of God and of our Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes of the dispersion, greetings.1 Giacomo, servo di Dio e del Signore Gesù Cristo, alle dodici tribù che sono nella diaspora, salute.
My brothers, when you have fallen into various trials, consider everything a joy,2 Perfetta gioia riputate, fratelli miei, l’imbattervi in prove d’ogni genere,
knowing that the proving of your faith exercises patience,3 ben sapendo che ciò che mette alla prova la vostra fede produce perseveranza.
and patience brings a work to perfection, so that you may be perfect and whole, deficient in nothing.4 Bisogna però che la peroeverinzi sia esercitata in modo perfetto, affinché siate perfetti e completi, di nulla mancanti.
But if anyone among you is in need of wisdom, let him petition God, who gives abundantly to all without reproach, and it shall be given to him.5 Se poi qualcuno di voi manca di sapienza, la chieda a Dio, che dona a tutti con semplicità e larghezza, senza rinfacciare; e gli sarà data.
But he should ask with faith, doubting nothing. For he who doubts is like a wave on the ocean, which is moved about by the wind and carried away;6 Ma chieda con fede, senza esitanze. Chi esita somiglia all’onda del mare percossa e sbattuta dal vento.
then a man should not consider that he would receive anything from the Lord.7 Non creda infatti di ricevere qualcosa dal Signore un tale uomo,
For a man who is of two minds is inconstant in all his ways.8 uomo dall’animo diviso, instabile in tutte le sue imprese.
Now a humble brother should glory in his exaltation,9 Il fratello in condizione umile si glorii della sua esaltazione;
and a rich one, in his humiliation, for he will pass away like the flower of the grass.10 quello ricco della sua umiliazione, poiché come flore d’erba passerà.
For the sun has risen with a scorching heat, and has dried the grass, and its flower has fallen off, and the appearance of its beauty has perished. So also will the rich one wither away, according to his paths.11 Sorge infatti il sole con il vento infuocato e inaridisce l'erba, e il suo fiore cade e la bellezza della sua forma sparisce: così anche il ricco nel suo pellegrinare si consumerà.
Blessed is the man who suffers temptation. For when he has been proven, he shall receive the crown of life which God has promised to those who love him.12 Beato l’uomo che sopporta pazientemente Una prova, perché, una volta collaudato, riceverà la corona della vita, che il Signore promise a quelli che lo amano.
No one should say, when he is tempted, that he was tempted by God. For God does not entice toward evils, and he himself tempts no one.13 Nessuno, quand’è tentato, dica: «sono tentato da Dio», perché Dio non può esser tentato al male e lui non tenta nessuno.
Yet truly, each one is tempted by his own desires, having been enticed and drawn away.14 Ciascuno invece è tentato dalla propria concupiscenza, adescato e sedotto.
Thereafter, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin. Yet truly sin, when it has been consummated, produces death.15 La concupiscenza poi, come se avesse concepito, partorisce peccato; e il peccato, una volta consumato, genera morte.
And so, do not choose to go astray, my most beloved brothers.16 Non ingannatevi, fratelli miei amatissimi.
Every excellent gift and every perfect gift is from above, descending from the Father of lights, with whom there is no change, nor any shadow of alteration.17 Ogni buon regalo e ogni dono perfetto è dall’alto, scende dal Padre degli astri, presso il quale non esistono variazioni 0 ombre di rivolgimento.
For by his own will he produced us through the Word of truth, so that we might be a kind of beginning among his creatures.18 Ci generò per sua volontà per mezzo di una parola di verità, affinché noi fossimo come le primizie delle sue creature.
You know this, my most beloved brothers. So let every man be quick to listen, but slow to speak and slow to anger.19 Già lo sapete, fratelli miei carissimi. Che ognuno sia sollecito ad ascoltare, tardo a parlare, tardo alla collera:
For the anger of man does not accomplish the justice of God.20 difatti, collera d’uomo non opera giustizia di Dio.
Because of this, having cast away all uncleanness and an abundance of malice, receive with meekness the newly-grafted Word, which is able to save your souls.21 Perciò, rigettando ogni sozzura ed eccesso cattivo, accogliete con dolcezza la parola in voi seminata, che può salvare le anime vostre.
So be doers of the Word, and not listeners only, deceiving yourselves.22 Fatevi allora esecutori della parola, e non soltanto uditori, che imbrogliano se stessi.
For if anyone is a listener of the Word, but not also a doer, he is comparable to a man gazing into a mirror upon the face that he was born with;23 Poiché, se uno è solo uditore della parola e non esecutore, somiglia a uno che rimira il suo viso in uno specchio
and after considering himself, he went away and promptly forgot what he had seen.24 e, rimiratolo, se ne va, subito dimenticando com’era.
But he who gazes upon the perfect law of liberty, and who remains in it, is not a forgetful hearer, but instead a doer of the work. He shall be blessed in what he does.25 Ma chi si piega a guardare alla legge perfetta di libertà e persevererà, non da ascoltatore smemorato ma da esecutore laborioso, costui sarà beato nella sua attività.
But if anyone considers himself to be religious, but he does not restrain his tongue, but instead seduces his own heart: such a one’s religion is vanity.26 Se uno crede di essere pio, ma non pone un freno alla sua lingua, inganna il suo cuore e la sua religione è vuota.
This is religion, clean and undefiled before God the Father: to visit orphans and widows in their tribulations, and to keep yourself immaculate, apart from this age.27 Per Dio, che è anche Padre, la religione pura e senza macchia è questa: visitare gli orfani e le vedove nella loro tribolazione, custodirsi immacolati dal mondo.
