CATHOLIC PUBLIC DOMAINEL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
For you yourselves know, brothers, that our acceptance among you was not empty.1 Ustedes saben muy bien, hermanos, que la visita que les hicimos no fue inútil.
Instead, having previously suffered and been treated shamefully, as you know, at Philippi, we had confidence in our God, so as to speak the Gospel of God to you with much solicitude.2 Después de ser maltratados e insultados en Filipos, como ya saben, Dios nos dio la audacia necesaria para anunciarles su Buena Noticia en medio de un penoso combate.
For our exhortation was not in error, nor from impurity, nor with deception.3 Nuestra predicación no se inspira en el error, ni en la impureza, ni en el engaño.
But, just as we have been tested by God, so that the Gospel would be entrusted to us, so also did we speak, not so as to please men, but rather to please God, who tests our hearts.4 Al contrario, Dios nos encontró dignos de confiarnos la Buena Noticia, y nosotros la predicamos, procurando agradar no a los hombres, sino a Dios, que examina nuestros corazones.
And neither did we, at any time, become flattering in speech, as you know, nor did we seek an opportunity for avarice, as God is witness.5 Ustedes saben –y Dios es testigo de ello– que nunca hemos tenido palabras de adulación, ni hemos buscado pretexto para ganar dinero.
Nor did we seek the glory of men, neither from you, nor from others.6 Tampoco hemos ambicionado el reconocimiento de los hombres, ni de ustedes ni de nadie,
And although we could have been a burden to you, as Apostles of Christ, instead we became like little ones in your midst, like a nurse cherishing her children.7 si bien, como Apóstoles de Cristo, teníamos el derecho de hacernos valer. Al contrario, fuimos tan condescendientes con ustedes, como una madre que alimenta y cuida a sus hijos.
So desirous were we for you that we were willing to hand over to you, not only the Gospel of God, but even our own souls. For you have become most beloved to us.8 Sentíamos por ustedes tanto afecto, que deseábamos entregarles, no solamente la Buena Noticia de Dios, sino también nuestra propia vida: tan queridos llegaron a sernos.
For you remember, brothers, our hardship and weariness. We preached the Gospel of God among you, working night and day, so that we would not be burdensome to any of you.9 Recuerden, hermanos, nuestro trabajo y nuestra fatiga cuando les predicamos la Buena Noticia de Dios, trabajáramos día y noche para no serles una carga.
You are witnesses, as is God, of how holy and just and blameless we were with you who have believed.10 Nuestra conducta con ustedes, los creyentes, fue siempre santa, justa e irreprochable: ustedes son testigos, y Dios también.
And you know the manner, with each one of you, like a father with his sons,11 Y como recordarán, los hemos exhortado y animado a cada uno personalmente, como un padre a sus hijos,
in which we were pleading with you and consoling you, bearing witness, so that you would walk in a manner worthy of God, who has called you into his kingdom and glory.12 instándoles a que lleven una vida digna del Dios que los llamó a su Reino y a su gloria.
For this reason also, we give thanks to God without ceasing: because, when you had accepted from us the Word of the hearing of God, you accepted it not as the word of men, but (as it truly is) as the Word of God, who is working in you who have believed.13 Nosotros, por nuestra parte, no cesamos de dar gracias a Dios, porque cuando recibieron la Palabra que les predicamos, ustedes la aceptaron no como palabra humana, sino como lo que es realmente, como Palabra de Dios, que actúa en ustedes, los que creen.
For you, brothers, have become imitators of the churches of God which are at Judea, in Christ Jesus. For you, too, have suffered the same things from your fellow countrymen as they have suffered from the Jews,14 En efecto, ustedes, hermanos, siguieron el ejemplo de las Iglesias de Dios, unidas a Cristo Jesús, que están en Judea, porque han sufrido de parte de sus compatriotas el mismo trato que ellas sufrieron de parte de los judíos.
who also killed both the Lord Jesus, and the Prophets, and who have persecuted us. But they do not please God, and so they are adversaries to all men.15 Ellos mataron al Señor Jesús y a los profetas, y también nos persiguieron a nosotros; no agradan a Dios y son enemigos de todos los hombres,
They prohibit us to speak to the Gentiles, so that they may be saved, and thus do they continually add to their own sins. But the wrath of God will overtake them in the very end.16 ya que nos impiden predicar a los paganos para que se salven. Así, constantemente están colmando la medida de sus pecados, pero la ira de Dios ha caído sobre ellos para siempre.
And we, brothers, having been deprived of you for a short time, in sight, but not in heart, have hurried all the more to see your face, with a great desire.17 En cuanto a nosotros, hermanos –físicamente separados de ustedes por un tiempo, aunque no de corazón– sentimos un ardiente y vivísimo deseo de volver a verlos.
For we wanted to come to you, (indeed, I, Paul, attempted to do so once, and then again,) but Satan impeded us.18 Por eso quisimos ir hasta allí; yo mismo, Pablo, lo intenté varias veces, pero Satanás me lo impidió.
For what is our hope, and our joy, and our crown of glory? Is it not you, before our Lord Jesus Christ at his return?19 ¿Quién sino ustedes, son nuestra esperanza, nuestro gozo y la corona de la que estaremos orgullosos delante de nuestro Señor Jesús, el Día de su Venida?
For you are our glory and our joy.20 ¡Sí, ustedes son nuestra gloria y nuestro gozo!
