Then there approached the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, who was the son of Joseph: and their names are Mahlah, and Noa, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.1 There then came forward the daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher, son of Gilead, son of Machir, son of Manasseh; he belonged to the clans of Manasseh son of Joseph. His daughters' names were Mahlah,Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah.
And they stood before Moses and Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the people, at the door of the tabernacle of the covenant, and they said:2 They appeared before Moses, the priest Eleazar, the leaders and the whole community, at theentrance to the Tent of Meeting, and said,
“Our father died in the desert, and was not with the sedition, which was stirred up against the Lord under Korah, but he died in his own sin; he had no male sons. Why is his name taken away from his family, because he had no son? Give us a possession among the kinsmen of our father.”3 'Our father died in the desert. He was not a member of the party who banded together againstYahweh, Korah's party; it was for his own sin that he died without sons.
And Moses referred their case to the judgment of the Lord.4 Why should our father's name be lost to his clan? Since he had no son, give us some property likeour father's kinsmen.'
And the Lord said to him:5 Moses took their case before Yahweh,
“The daughters of Zelophehad are asking for something just. So give them a possession among the kinsmen of their father, and let them succeed him in his inheritance.6 and Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,
And to the sons of Israel, you shall speak these things:7 'Zelophehad's daughters are right in what they say. You will indeed give them a property to be theirheritage among their father's kinsmen; see that their father's heritage is passed on to them.
When a man dies without a son, his inheritance shall be transferred to his daughter.8 Then speak to the Israelites and say, "If a man dies without sons, his heritage wil pass to hisdaughter.
If he has no daughter, his brothers shall succeed him.9 If he has no daughter, the heritage will go to his brothers.
But if there were also no brothers, you shall give the inheritance to the brothers of his father.10 If he has no brothers, his heritage wil go to his father's brothers.
But if he has no paternal uncles, the inheritance shall be given to those who are closest to him. And this shall be, for the sons of Israel, consecrated as a perpetual law, just as the Lord has instructed Moses.”11 If his father has no brothers, his heritage wil go to the member of his clan who is most nearlyrelated; it wil become his property. This will be a legal rule for the Israelites, as Yahweh has ordered Moses." '
The Lord also said to Moses: “Ascend onto this mountain, Abarim, and contemplate from there the land, which I will give to the sons of Israel.12 Yahweh said to Moses, 'Climb this mountain of the Abarim range, and look at the country which Ihave given to the Israelites.
And when you have seen it, you shall then go to your people, just as your brother Aaron went.13 After you have seen it, you will be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was.
For you offended me in the desert of Sin at the Contradiction of the multitude; neither were you willing to sanctify me in their sight over the waters. These are the Waters of Contradiction at Kadesh in the desert of Sin.”14 For you both rebel ed in the desert of Zin when the community disputed with me and when I orderedyou to assert my holiness before their eyes by means of the water.' (These were the Waters of Meribah ofKadesh, in the desert of Zin.)
Moses answered him:15 Moses then said to Yahweh,
“May the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, provide a man, who may be over this multitude,16 'May it please Yahweh, God of the spirits that give life to al living creatures, to appoint a leader forthis community,
and who may be able to exit and enter before them, and who may lead them out or lead them in: lest the people of the Lord be like sheep without a shepherd.”17 to be at their head in all their undertakings, a man who wil lead them out and bring them in, so thatYahweh's community wil not be like sheep without a shepherd.'
And the Lord said to him: “Take Joshua, the son of Nun, a man in whom the Spirit is, and place your hand upon him.18 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom the spirit dwel s, and lay yourhand on him.
And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire multitude.19 Bring him before the priest Eleazar and the whole community and give him your orders in theirpresence,
And you shall give him the precepts in the sight of all, and a portion of your glory, so that the entire congregation of the sons of Israel may listen to him.20 conferring some of your own authority on him, so that the whole community of Israelites wil obeyhim.
On his behalf, if anything is to be done, Eleazar the priest shall consult the Lord. He, and all the sons of Israel with him, and the rest of the multitude, shall go out and enter in at his word.”21 He wil present himself to the priest Eleazar who wil consult Yahweh on his behalf by means of therite of the urim; at his command, they wil go out and, at his command, they will come in, he and all the Israeliteswith him, the whole community.'
Moses did just as the Lord had instructed. And when he had brought Joshua, he set him before Eleazar the priest, and before the entire gathering of the people.22 Moses did as Yahweh had ordered. He took Joshua, brought him before the priest Eleazar and thewhole community,
And imposing his hands upon his head, he repeated all that the Lord had commanded.23 laid his hands on him and gave him his orders, as Yahweh had directed through Moses.
