1 Then there approached the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, who was the son of Joseph: and their names are Mahlah, and Noa, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Tirzah.	1 Les filles de Séloféhad vinrent alors se présenter. Séloféhad était fils de Héfer, fils de Galaad, fils de Makir, fils de Manassé. Il appartenait au clan de Manassé, fils de Joseph. Ses filles s’appelaient Mahla, Noa, Hogla, Milka et Tirsa.
2 And they stood before Moses and Eleazar the priest, and all the leaders of the people, at the door of the tabernacle of the covenant, and they said:	2 Elles se présentèrent donc à Moïse et à Éléazar le prêtre, devant les chefs et toute la communauté, à l’entrée de la Tente du Rendez-Vous:
3 “Our father died in the desert, and was not with the sedition, which was stirred up against the Lord under Korah, but he died in his own sin; he had no male sons. Why is his name taken away from his family, because he had no son? Give us a possession among the kinsmen of our father.”	3 “Notre père, dirent-elles, est mort au désert, il n’appartenait pas à la bande de Coré qui se révolta contre Yahvé, mais il est mort pour son propre péché, sans avoir de fils.
4 And Moses referred their case to the judgment of the Lord.	4 Pourquoi le nom de notre père disparaîtrait-il au milieu de son clan? Puisqu’il n’a pas eu de fils, donne-nous un domaine au milieu des frères de notre père.”
5 And the Lord said to him:	5 Moïse porta ce cas devant Yahvé,
6 “The daughters of Zelophehad are asking for something just. So give them a possession among the kinsmen of their father, and let them succeed him in his inheritance.	6 et Yahvé dit à Moïse:
7 And to the sons of Israel, you shall speak these things:	7 “Ce que disent les filles de Séloféhad est juste. Tu leur donneras donc en héritage une propriété au milieu des frères de leur père, et tu leur feras passer l’héritage de leur père.
8 When a man dies without a son, his inheritance shall be transferred to his daughter.	8 À ce sujet tu diras aux Israélites: Si un homme meurt sans avoir de fils, vous ferez passer son héritage à sa fille
9 If he has no daughter, his brothers shall succeed him.	9 et s’il n’a pas de fille, vous donnerez son héritage à ses frères.
10 But if there were also no brothers, you shall give the inheritance to the brothers of his father.	10 S’il n’a pas de frère, vous donnerez son héritage au frère de son père,
11 But if he has no paternal uncles, the inheritance shall be given to those who are closest to him. And this shall be, for the sons of Israel, consecrated as a perpetual law, just as the Lord has instructed Moses.”	11 et si son père n’a pas de frère, vous donnerez l’héritage au parent le plus proche dans sa famille: c’est lui qui en héritera. Ce sera pour les Israélites une règle de droit, comme Yahvé l’a ordonné à Moïse.”
12 The Lord also said to Moses: “Ascend onto this mountain, Abarim, and contemplate from there the land, which I will give to the sons of Israel.	12 Yahvé dit à Moïse: “Monte sur cette montagne de la chaîne des Abarim, et regarde le pays que je donne aux Israélites.
13 And when you have seen it, you shall then go to your people, just as your brother Aaron went.	13 Quand tu l’auras vu, tu seras réuni à ton peuple comme Aaron ton frère,
14 For you offended me in the desert of Sin at the Contradiction of the multitude; neither were you willing to sanctify me in their sight over the waters. These are the Waters of Contradiction at Kadesh in the desert of Sin.”	14 parce que dans le désert de Sin, lorsque la communauté a murmuré, vous avez été rebelles à mes ordres et vous n’avez pas manifesté ma sainteté devant le peuple dans l’affaire des eaux.” (Ce sont les eaux de Mériba à Qadesh, dans le désert de Sin.)
15 Moses answered him:	15 Moïse dit à Yahvé:
16 “May the Lord, the God of the spirits of all flesh, provide a man, who may be over this multitude,	16 “Que Yahvé, le Dieu des esprits de tout être vivant, mette à la tête de la communauté un homme
17 and who may be able to exit and enter before them, and who may lead them out or lead them in: lest the people of the Lord be like sheep without a shepherd.”	17 qui sorte et rentre à sa tête. Il la fera sortir, il la fera rentrer, et la communauté de Yahvé ne sera pas comme un troupeau qui n’a pas de pasteur.”
18 And the Lord said to him: “Take Joshua, the son of Nun, a man in whom the Spirit is, and place your hand upon him.	18 Yahvé répondit à Moïse: “Prends Josué, fils de Noun, car c’est un homme en qui se trouve l’esprit, et tu lui imposeras les mains.
19 And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest and the entire multitude.	19 Puis tu le feras venir devant Éléazar le prêtre et devant toute la communauté, et là, tu lui donneras tes consignes sous leurs yeux.
20 And you shall give him the precepts in the sight of all, and a portion of your glory, so that the entire congregation of the sons of Israel may listen to him.	20 Tu lui transmettras une part de ton autorité pour que toute la communauté des Israélites lui obéisse.
21 On his behalf, if anything is to be done, Eleazar the priest shall consult the Lord. He, and all the sons of Israel with him, and the rest of the multitude, shall go out and enter in at his word.”	21 “Désormais il pourra se présenter devant le prêtre Éléazar, qui consultera pour lui les jugements de Yahvé au moyen de l’Ourim. Et selon sa réponse, Josué sortira ou rentrera et, avec lui tous les Israélites et toute la communauté.”
22 Moses did just as the Lord had instructed. And when he had brought Joshua, he set him before Eleazar the priest, and before the entire gathering of the people.	22 Moïse fit ce que Yahvé lui avait commandé. Il fit venir Josué devant Éléazar le prêtre et devant toute la communauté.
23 And imposing his hands upon his head, he repeated all that the Lord had commanded.	23 Après lui avoir imposé les mains il lui donna ses ordres, ceux que Yahvé avait donnés par la bouche de Moïse.
