Sirach 44

1 Let us praise the men of glory, and our ancestors in their generation.	1 Façamos o elogio dos homens ilustres, que são nossos antepassados, em sua linhagem.
2 The Lord has wrought great glory, by his own magnificence, from ancient times.	2 O Senhor deu-lhes uma glória abundante, desde o princípio do mundo, por um efeito de sua magnificência.
3 There are those who rule with their authority, men of great virtue, who are gifted with prudence. There are those who announce among the prophets, with the dignity of prophets.	3 Eles foram soberanos em seus estados, foram homens de grande virtude, dotados de prudência. As predições que anunciaram adquiriram-lhes a dignidade de profetas:
4 And there are those who rule over the present generation, by the virtue of prudence, with very holy words for the people.	4 eles governaram os povos do seu tempo e, com a firmeza de sua sabedoria, deram instruções muito santas ao povo.
5 There are those who, by their skill, compose musical themes, so as to set the verses of Scripture to music.	5 Com sua habilidade cultivaram a arte das melodias, publicaram os cânticos das escrituras.
6 There are men rich in virtue, who make a study of beauty, who live in peacefulness in their houses.	6 Homens ricos de virtude, que tinham gosto pela beleza, e viviam em paz em suas casas.
7 All these obtained glory in their generations, and they had praise in their days.	7 Todos eles adquiriram fama junto de seus contemporâneos, e foram a glória de seu tempo.
8 They left behind a name for those who were born of them, so that their praises might be described.	8 Aqueles que deles nasceram deixaram um nome que publica seus louvores.
9 But for some of them, there is no memorial. They have passed away as if they had never existed; and they have become as if they had never been born, and their sons along with them.	9 Outros há, dos quais não se tem lembrança; pereceram como se nunca tivessem existido. Nasceram, eles e seus filhos, como se não tivessem nascido.
10 But these were men of mercy, whose pious deeds have not failed.	10 Os primeiros, porém, foram homens de misericórdia; nunca foram esquecidas as obras de sua caridade.
11 Good things continue with their offspring.	11 Na sua posteridade permanecem os seus bens.
12 Their descendents are a holy inheritance, and their offspring stand firm in the covenants.	12 Os filhos de seus filhos são uma santa linhagem, e seus descendentes mantêm-se fiéis às alianças.
13 And because of them, their sons remain even unto eternity. Their offspring and their glory will not be forsaken.	13 Por causa deles seus filhos permanecem para sempre, e sua posteridade, assim como sua glória, não terá fim.
14 Their bodies were buried in peace, and their name lives on, from generation to generation.	14 Seus corpos foram sepultados em paz, seu nome vive de século em século.
15 Let the people declare their wisdom, and let the Church announce their praise.	15 Proclamem os povos sua sabedoria, e cante a assembléia os seus louvores!
16 Enoch pleased God, and he was transferred to Paradise, so that he might offer repentance to the nations.	16 Henoc agradou a Deus e foi transportado ao paraíso, para excitar as nações à penitência.
17 Noah was found to be perfect and just, and so, in the time of wrath, he was made a reconciliation.	17 Noé foi julgado justo e perfeito, e no tempo da ira tornou-se o elo de reconciliação.
18 As a result, there was a remnant left for the earth, when the great flood was made.	18 Por isso foram deixados alguns na terra, quando veio o dilúvio.
19 The covenants of the world were placed with him, so that all flesh would not be wiped away by the great flood.	19 Ele foi o depositário das alianças feitas com o mundo, a fim de que ninguém doravante fosse destruído por dilúvio.
20 Abraham was the great father of a multitude of nations, and no one was found to be like him in glory. He observed the law of the Most High, and he formed a covenant with him.	20 Abraão é o pai ilustre de uma infinidade de povos. Ninguém lhe foi igual em glória: guardou a lei do Altíssimo, e fez aliança com ele.
21 In his flesh, he caused the covenant to stand, and when tested, he was found to be faithful.	21 O Senhor marcou essa aliança em sua carne; na provação, mostrou-se fiel.
22 Therefore, by an oath, he gave glory to him among his people, so as to increase him like the dust of the earth,	22 Por isso jurou Deus que o havia de glorificar na sua raça, e prometeu que ele cresceria como o pó da terra.
23 and to exalt his offspring like the stars, and to give an inheritance to them from sea to sea, and from the river even to the ends of the earth.	23 Prometeu-lhe que exaltaria sua raça como as estrelas, e que seu quinhão de herança se estenderia de um mar a outro: desde o rio até as extremidades da terra.
24 And he acted in like manner toward Isaac, because of his father Abraham.	24 Ele fez o mesmo com Isaac, por causa de seu pai, Abraão.
25 The Lord gave the blessing of all the nations to him, and he confirmed his covenant upon the head of Jacob.	25 O Senhor deu-lhe a bênção de todas as nações, e confirmou sua aliança sobre a cabeça de Jacó.
26 He acknowledged him in his blessings, and he gave an inheritance to him, and he distributed to him the portion of the twelve tribes.	26 Distinguiu-o com suas bênçãos, deu-lhe a herança, e repartiu-a entre as doze tribos.
27 And he preserved for him men of mercy, who were found to have grace before the eyes of all flesh.	27 Conservou-lhe homens cheios de misericórdia, que encontraram graça aos olhos de toda carne.
