1 And when Jethro, the priest of Midian, the kinsman of Moses, had heard all that God had done for Moses, and for his people Israel, and that the Lord had led Israel away from Egypt,	1 Ietro, sacerdote di Madian, suocero di Mosè, intese tutto quello che Dio aveva fatto a Mosè e ad Israele, suo popolo: come il Signore aveva fatto uscire Israele dall'Egitto.
2 he brought Zipporah, the wife of Moses, whom he was to return to him,	2 Allora Ietro prese Zippora, moglie di Mosè, che prima egli aveva rinviata,
3 and her two sons, of whom one was called Gershom, (for his father said, “I have been a newcomer in a foreign land,”)	3 con i suoi due figli; il nome di uno era Gherson, poiché aveva detto: "Sono stato ospite in terra straniera",
4 and the other in truth was Eliezer, (“For the God of my father,” he said, “is my helper, and has rescued me from the sword of Pharaoh.”)	4 e il nome dell'altro Eliezer, perché: "Il Dio di mio padre è venuto in mio aiuto, e mi ha liberato dalla spada del faraone".
5 And so Jethro, the kinsman of Moses, with his sons and his wife, came to Moses in the desert, where he was encamped next to the mountain of God.	5 Ietro, suocero di Mosè, venne da Mosè, con la moglie e i figli di lui, nel deserto dove era accampato, al monte di Dio.
6 And he sent word to Moses, saying: “I, Jethro, your kinsman, have come to you, with your wife, and your two sons with her.”	6 E fece dire a Mosè: "Sono io, Ietro, tuo suocero, che vengo a te con tua moglie, e i tuoi due figli".
7 And going out to meet his kinsman, he reverenced and kissed him. And they saluted each other with peaceful words. And when he had arrived at the tent,	7 Mosè uscì incontro a suo suocero, si prosternò e lo baciò. Si interrogarono vicendevolmente sulla salute ed entrarono nella tenda.
8 Moses explained to his kinsman all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians on behalf of Israel, and all the hardships which had befallen them on the journey, and how the Lord had freed them.	8 Mosè raccontò a suo suocero tutto quello che il Signore aveva fatto al faraone e all'Egitto per causa d'Israele, tutte le tribolazioni che avevano trovato nel cammino; dalle quali il Signore li aveva salvati.
9 And Jethro was gladdened over all the good that the Lord had done for Israel, because he had rescued them from the hand of the Egyptians.	9 Ietro si rallegrò per tutto il bene che il Signore aveva fatto a Israele, per averlo salvato dalla mano dell'Egitto.
10 And he said: “Blessed is the Lord, who has freed his people from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of Pharaoh; he has rescued his people from the hand of Egypt.	10 Ietro disse: "Benedetto sia il Signore, che vi ha salvato dalla mano dell'Egitto e dalla mano del faraone: egli ha salvato il popolo dalla mano dell'Egitto.
11 Now I know that the great Lord is above all gods. This is why they acted arrogantly against them.”	11 Ora so che il Signore è il più grande di tutti gli dèi, per quanto ha fatto agli Egiziani che si comportarono con arroganza contro gli Ebrei".
12 And so Jethro, the kinsman of Moses, offered holocausts and sacrifices to God. And Aaron arrived with all the elders of Israel, in order to eat bread with him in the sight of God.	12 Poi Ietro, suocero di Mosè, offrì un olocausto e un sacrificio di comunione in onore di Dio, e venne Aronne con tutti gli anziani d'Israele a mangiare il cibo con il suocero di Mosè davanti a Dio.
13 Then, the next day, Moses sat down in order to judge the people, and they stood beside Moses from morning, even until evening.	13 Il giorno dopo Mosè si sedette per giudicare il popolo, e il popolo stette con Mosè dal mattino alla sera.
14 And when, of course, his kinsman saw all that he did among the people, he said: “What is this that you do among the people? Why do you sit alone, while all the people stand before you, from morning, even until evening?”	14 Il suocero di Mosè vide tutto quello che egli faceva al popolo e disse: "Che cosa è quello che fai al popolo? Perché siedi tu solo, e tutto il popolo sta con te dal mattino alla sera?".
15 And Moses answered him: “The people come to me seeking the verdict of God.	15 Mosè disse al suo suocero: "Il popolo viene da me per consultare Dio.
16 And when any kind of dispute occurs among them, they come to me to judge between them, and to reveal the precepts of God and of his laws.”	16 Quando c'è qualcosa tra di loro vengono da me, e io giudico tra l'uno e l'altro: faccio conoscere i decreti di Dio e le sue leggi".
17 But he said, “This is not good, what you are doing.	17 Il suocero di Mosè gli disse: "Non è bene quello che fai.
18 You will be consumed by foolish efforts, both you and this people who are with you. The task is beyond your strength; you will not be able bear it alone.	18 Ti esaurirai, sia tu che questo popolo che è con te, perché è troppo pesante per te: non puoi farlo da solo.
19 But listen to my words and counsels, and then God will be with you. Be available to the people in that which pertains to God, so as to refer what they say to him,	19 Ora ascoltami: ti consiglio e Dio sia con te! Tu starai al posto del popolo davanti a Dio e porta tu a Dio le loro questioni.
20 and to reveal to the people the ceremonies, and the rituals of worship, and the way by which they should progress, and the work that they should do.	20 Informali dei decreti e delle leggi e fa' loro conoscere il cammino da percorrere e quello che dovranno fare.
21 Then provide, from all of the people, men capable and fearing God, in whom there is truth and who hate avarice, and appoint from them tribunes, and leaders of hundreds, and of fifties, and of tens,	21 Invece prenderai tra tutto il popolo uomini di virtù che temono Dio, uomini veritieri che odiano il guadagno, e li porrai su di loro come capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine e capi di decine.
22 who may judge the people at all times. Then, when anything greater will have occurred, they may refer it to you, and let them judge the lesser matters only. And so it may be lighter for you, the burden being divided among others.	22 Giudicheranno il popolo per tutto il tempo: ogni questione importante la porteranno a te, ma giudicheranno essi ogni questione piccola. Così alleggerisci te ed essi ti sollevano.
23 If you will do this, you will fulfill the orders of God, and you will be able to uphold his precepts. And this entire people will return to their places in peace.”	23 Se farai questo, e che Dio te lo ordini, potrai durarla, e anche tutto questo popolo rientrerà presso di sé in pace".
24 Having heard this, Moses did everything that he had suggested to him.	24 Mosè ascoltò la voce del suo suocero e fece quello che aveva detto:
25 And choosing virtuous men from all of Israel, he appointed them as leaders of the people: tribunes, and leaders of hundreds, and of fifties, and of tens.	25 Mosè scelse uomini di virtù da tutto Israele e li costituì come capi sul popolo, capi di migliaia, capi di centinaia, capi di cinquantine e capi di decine.
26 And they judged the people at all times. But whatever was more serious, they referred to him, and they judged easier matters only.	26 Essi giudicavano il popolo per tutto il tempo: le questioni importanti le portavano a Mosè, mentre essi stessi giudicavano tutte le questioni piccole.
27 And he dismissed his kinsman, who, turning back, went to his own land.	27 Poi Mosè congedò suo suocero, che se ne andò nella sua terra.
