1 And when Jethro, the priest of Midian, the kinsman of Moses, had heard all that God had done for Moses, and for his people Israel, and that the Lord had led Israel away from Egypt,	1 - Ietro, sacerdote di Madian e suocero di Mosè, avendo udito quel che Dio aveva fatto a Mosè e ad Israele suo popolo, e come il Signore aveva condotto via Israele dall' Egitto,
2 he brought Zipporah, the wife of Moses, whom he was to return to him,	2 prese Sefora moglie di Mosè, che questi gli aveva rimandata,
3 and her two sons, of whom one was called Gershom, (for his father said, “I have been a newcomer in a foreign land,”)	3 e i suoi due figli; uno di questi si chiamava Gersam, avendo detto il padre: «Fui pellegrino in terra straniera»,
4 and the other in truth was Eliezer, (“For the God of my father,” he said, “is my helper, and has rescued me from the sword of Pharaoh.”)	4 e l'altro Eliezer, perchè il padre aveva detto: «l'Iddio di mio padre è il mio aiuto, e m' ha liberato dalla spada del Faraone».
5 And so Jethro, the kinsman of Moses, with his sons and his wife, came to Moses in the desert, where he was encamped next to the mountain of God.	5 Venne dunque Ietro, suocero di Mosè, coi figli e la moglie di lui nel deserto, dove s'era accampato presso il monte di Dio;
6 And he sent word to Moses, saying: “I, Jethro, your kinsman, have come to you, with your wife, and your two sons with her.”	6 e mandò a dire a Mosè: «Io Ietro tuo suocero vengo a te, con la tua moglie, e i due tuoi figli con lei».
7 And going out to meet his kinsman, he reverenced and kissed him. And they saluted each other with peaceful words. And when he had arrived at the tent,	7 Uscito Mosè incontro al suocero, gli si prosternò e lo baciò; e si scambiarono i saluti e parole di amicizia. Entrato poi nella tenda,
8 Moses explained to his kinsman all that the Lord had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians on behalf of Israel, and all the hardships which had befallen them on the journey, and how the Lord had freed them.	8 Mosè raccontò al suocero tutto quello che il Signore aveva fatto al Faraone ed agli Egiziani a favore di Israele; tutti i travagli sopravvenuti a loro nel viaggio, e come il Signore li aveva liberati.
9 And Jethro was gladdened over all the good that the Lord had done for Israel, because he had rescued them from the hand of the Egyptians.	9 Ietro si rallegrò per tutti i benefizi fatti dal Signore ad Israele, e perchè gli aveva cavati di mano agli Egiziani;
10 And he said: “Blessed is the Lord, who has freed his people from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of Pharaoh; he has rescued his people from the hand of Egypt.	10 e disse: «Benedetto il Signore; che vi ha liberati dalle mani degli Egiziani e del Faraone; e che ha sottratto il suo popolo dal potere dell' Egitto.
11 Now I know that the great Lord is above all gods. This is why they acted arrogantly against them.”	11 Ora ho conosciuto che il Signore è grande sopra tutti gli dèi; perché [gli Egiziani] avevano agito crudelmente contro quelli [di Israele]».
12 And so Jethro, the kinsman of Moses, offered holocausts and sacrifices to God. And Aaron arrived with all the elders of Israel, in order to eat bread with him in the sight of God.	12 Ietro dunque, suocero di Mosè, offrì a Dio olocausti e vittime; ed Aronne e tutti i seniori d'Israele vennero per prendere cibo con lui innanzi al Signore.
13 Then, the next day, Moses sat down in order to judge the people, and they stood beside Moses from morning, even until evening.	13 Il giorno di poi, Mosè sedè a render giustizia al popolo, che gli stette intorno dalla mattina alla sera.
14 And when, of course, his kinsman saw all that he did among the people, he said: “What is this that you do among the people? Why do you sit alone, while all the people stand before you, from morning, even until evening?”	14 Il che avendo veduto il suo suocero, cioè quel che egli faceva alla turba, disse: «Che fai tu col popolo? Perchè siedi tu solo, e tutta la moltitudine sta ad aspettarti dalla mattina alla sera?».
15 And Moses answered him: “The people come to me seeking the verdict of God.	15 Rispose Mosè: «Vengono a me, chiedendo il giudizio di Dio.
16 And when any kind of dispute occurs among them, they come to me to judge between them, and to reveal the precepts of God and of his laws.”	16 Quando nasce fra loro qualche contesa, ricorrono a me perchè io giudichi fra loro ed annunzi i comandamenti di Dio, e le sue leggi».
17 But he said, “This is not good, what you are doing.	17 Ma egli rispose: «Tu non fai bene:
18 You will be consumed by foolish efforts, both you and this people who are with you. The task is beyond your strength; you will not be able bear it alone.	18 ti consumi in una fatica improba, tu e questo popolo che sta con te; è un'impresa superiore alle tue forze, e da solo non la potrai reggere.
19 But listen to my words and counsels, and then God will be with you. Be available to the people in that which pertains to God, so as to refer what they say to him,	19 Ascolta le mie parole ed i miei consigli, e Dio sarà teco. Tratta col popolo le cose che riguardano Dio, per poi riferirgli ciò che ti diranno,
20 and to reveal to the people the ceremonies, and the rituals of worship, and the way by which they should progress, and the work that they should do.	20 e per insegnare al popolo le osservanze, il modo d'onorare Dio, la via per la quale debbono camminare, e le cose che debbono fare.
21 Then provide, from all of the people, men capable and fearing God, in whom there is truth and who hate avarice, and appoint from them tribunes, and leaders of hundreds, and of fifties, and of tens,	21 Eleggi poi, di fra tutta la gente, degli uomini autorevoli, timorati di Dio, che siano giusti, ed abbiano in orrore l'avarizia; e da essi prendi dei capi di migliaia, di centinaia, di cinquantine e diecine,
22 who may judge the people at all times. Then, when anything greater will have occurred, they may refer it to you, and let them judge the lesser matters only. And so it may be lighter for you, the burden being divided among others.	22 che giudichino il popolo in ogni tempo. Quel che vi sarà di più grave, te lo riferiscano, ed essi giudichino gli affari minori; così, diviso con altri, il peso sarà più leggero per te.
23 If you will do this, you will fulfill the orders of God, and you will be able to uphold his precepts. And this entire people will return to their places in peace.”	23 Se così farai, eseguirai il comando di Dio, potrai adempire i suoi precetti, e tutto questo popolo se ne tornerà soddisfatto alle sue dimore».
24 Having heard this, Moses did everything that he had suggested to him.	24 Ciò udito, Mosè fece tutte le cose suggeritegli.
25 And choosing virtuous men from all of Israel, he appointed them as leaders of the people: tribunes, and leaders of hundreds, and of fifties, and of tens.	25 Scelti uomini di valore fra tutto Israele, li pose capi del popolo, per migliaia, per centinaia, per cinquantine e diecine.
26 And they judged the people at all times. But whatever was more serious, they referred to him, and they judged easier matters only.	26 Essi giudicavano il popolo ogni giorno; quel che v'era di più grave, lo riferivano a lui, sbrigando essi le sole cose più facili.
27 And he dismissed his kinsman, who, turning back, went to his own land.	27 Di poi congedò il suocero, il quale partì e se ne ritornò nella sua regione.
