Now it happened in that time that Amraphel, king of Shinar, and Arioch, king of Pontus, and Chedorlaomer, king of the Elamites, and Tidal, king of the Nations,1 Au temps d'Amraphel roi de Shinéar, d'Aryok roi d'Ellasar, de Kedor-Laomer roi d'Elam et deTidéal roi des Goyim,
went to war against Bera, king of Sodom, and against Birsha, king of Gomorrah, and against Shinab, king of Admah, and against Shemeber, king of Zeboiim, and against the king of Bela, that is Zoar.2 ceux-ci firent la guerre contre Béra roi de Sodome, Birsha roi de Gomorrhe, Shinéab roi d'Adma,Shémeéber roi de Ceboyim etle roi de Béla (c'est Coar).
All these came together in the wooded valley, which is now the Sea of Salt.3 Ces derniers se liguèrent dans la vallée de Siddim (c'est lamer du Sel).
For they had served Chedorlaomer for twelve years, and in the thirteenth year they withdrew from him.4 Douze ans ils avaient été soumis à Kedor-Laomer mais, la treizième année, ils se révoltèrent.
Therefore, in the fourteenth year, Chedorlaomer arrived, and the kings who were with him. And they struck the Rephaim at Ashteroth of the two horns, and the Zuzim with them, and the Emim at Shaveh-Kiriathaim.5 En la quatorzième année, arrivèrent Kedor-Laomer et les rois qui étaient avec lui. Ils battirent lesRephaïm à Ashterot-Qarnayim, les Zuzim à Ham, les Emim dans la plaine de Qiryatayim,
and the Chorreans in the mountains of Seir, even to the plains of Paran, which is in wilderness.6 les Horites dans les montagnes de Séïr jusqu'à El-Parân, qui est à la limite du désert.
And they returned and arrived at the fountain of Mishpat, which is Kadesh. And they struck the entire region of the Amalekites, and the Amorites who dwelt in Hazazontamar.7 Ils firent un mouvement tournant et vinrent à la Source du Jugement (c'est Cadès); ils battirent toutle territoire des Amalécites et aussi les Amorites qui habitaient Haçaçôn-Tamar.
And the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and indeed the king of Bela, which is Zoar, went forth. And they directed their point against them in the wooded valley,
namely, against Chedorlaomer, king of the Elamites, and Tidal, king of the Nations, and Amraphel, king of Shinar, and Arioch, king of Pontus: four kings against five.
Now the wooded valley had many pits of bitumen. And so the king of Sodom and the king of Gomorrah turned back and they fell there. And those who remained, fled to the mountain.10 Or la vallée de Siddim était pleine de puits de bitume; dansleur fuite, le roi de Sodome et le roi deGomorrhe y tombèrent, et le reste se réfugia dans la montagne.
Then they took all the substance of the Sodomites and the Gomorrahites, and all that pertained to food, and they went away,11 Les vainqueurs prirent tous les biens de Sodome et de Gomorrheet tous leurs vivres, et s'enallèrent.
along with both Lot, the son of Abram’s brother, who lived in Sodom, and his substance.12 Ils prirent aussi Lot et ses biens (le neveu d'Abram), et s'enallèrent; il habitait Sodome.
And behold, one who had escaped reported it to Abram the Hebrew, who lived in the steep valley of Mamre the Amorite, who was the brother of Eshcol, and the brother of Aner. For these had formed an agreement with Abram.13 Un rescapé vint informer Abram l'Hébreu, qui demeurait auChêne de l'Amorite Mambré, frèred'Eshkol et d'Aner; ils étaient les alliés d'Abram.
When Abram had heard this, namely, that his brother Lot had been taken captive, he numbered three hundred and eighteen of his own armed men and he went in pursuit all the way to Dan.14 Quand Abram apprit que son parent était emmené captif, il leva ses partisans, ses familiers, aunombre de 318, et mena la poursuite jusqu'à Dan.
And dividing his company, he rushed upon them in the night. And he struck them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.15 Il les attaqua de nuit en ordre dispersé, lui et ses gens, il les battit et les poursuivit jusqu'à Hoba,au nord de Damas.
And he brought back all the substance, and Lot his brother, with his substance, likewise the women and the people.16 Il reprit tous les biens, et aussi son parent Lot et ses biens, ainsi que les femmes et les gens.
Then the king of Sodom went out to meet him, after he returned from the slaughter at Chedorlaomer, and the kings who were with him at the valley of Shaveh, which is the valley of the king.17 Quand Abram revint après avoir battu Kedor-Laomer et les rois qui étaient avec lui, le roi deSodome alla à sa rencontre dans la vallée de Shavé (c'est la vallée du Roi).
Then in truth, Melchizedek, the king of Salem, brought forth bread and wine, for he was a priest of the Most High God;18 Melchisédech, roi de Shalem, apporta du pain et du vin; il était prêtre du Dieu Très-Haut.
he blessed him, and he said: “Blessed be Abram by the Most High God, who created heaven and earth.19 Il prononça cette bénédiction: "Béni soit Abram par le Dieu Très-Haut qui créa ciel et terre,
And blessed be the Most High God, through whose protection the enemies are in your hands.” And he gave him tithes from everything.20 et béni soit le Dieu Très-Haut qui a livré tes ennemis entre tes mains." Et Abram lui donna ladîme de tout.
Then the king of Sodom said to Abram, “Give me these souls, and take the rest for yourself.”21 Le roi de Sodome dit à Abram: "Donne-moi les personnes et prends les biens pour toi."
And he responded to him: “I lift up my hand to the Lord God, the Most High, the Possessor of heaven and earth,22 Mais Abram répondit au roi de Sodome: "Je lève la main devant le Dieu Très-Haut qui créa ciel etterre:
that from one thread within a blanket, even to a single shoelace, I will not take anything from that which is yours, lest you say, ‘I have enriched Abram,’23 ni un fil ni une courroie de sandale, je ne prendrai rien de ce qui est à toi, et tu ne pourras pas dire:J'ai enrichi Abram.
except that which the young men have eaten, and the shares for the men who came with me: Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre. These will take their shares.”24 Rien pour moi. Seulement ce que mes serviteurs ont mangé et la part des hommes qui sont venusavec moi, Aner, Eshkol et Mambré; eux prendront leur part."
