1 Samuel 16

1 Yahweh said to Samuel, 'How much longer do you mean to go on mourning over Saul, now that Imyself have rejected him as ruler of Israel? Fil your horn with oil and go. I am sending you to Jesse ofBethlehem, for I have found myself a king from among his sons.'	1 Enfin le Seigneur dit à Samuel: Jusqu'à quand pleurerez-vous Saül, puisque Je l'ai rejeté, et que Je ne veux plus qu'il règne sur Israël? Remplissez d'huile votre corne, et venez, afin que Je vous envoie chez Isaï le Bethléémite, car Je Me suis choisi un roi parmi ses fils.
2 Samuel replied, 'How can I go? When Saul hears of it he wil kill me.' Yahweh then said, 'Take a heiferwith you and say, "I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh."	2 Et Samuel lui répondit: Comment irai-je; car Saül l'apprendra et il me fera mourir. Et le Seigneur lui dit: Prenez avec vous un veau du troupeau, et vous direz: Je suis venu sacrifier au Seigneur.
3 Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I shal reveal to you what you must do; and you wil anoint for me theone I indicate to you.'	3 Vous appellerez Isaï au sacrifice, et Je vous indiquerai ce que vous aurez à faire, et vous oindrez celui que Je vous aurai montré.
4 Samuel did what Yahweh ordered and went to Bethlehem. The elders of the town came trembling tomeet him and asked, 'Seer, is your coming favourable for us,'	4 Samuel fit donc ce que le Seigneur lui avait dit. Il vint à Bethléem, et les anciens de la ville en furent tout surpris; ils allèrent au-devant de lui, et ils lui dirent: Nous apportez-vous la paix?
5 'Yes,' he replied. 'I have come to sacrifice to Yahweh. Purify yourselves and come with me to thesacrifice.' He purified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice.	5 Il leur répondit: Je vous apporte la paix; je suis venu pour sacrifier au Seigneur. Purifiez-vous, et venez avec moi, afin que j'offre la victime. Samuel purifia donc Isaï et ses fils, et les appela au sacrifice.
6 When they arrived, he looked at Eliab and thought, 'This must be Yahweh's anointed now before him,'	6 Et lorsqu'ils furent entrés, Samuel dit en voyant Eliab: Est-ce là celui que le Seigneur a choisi pour être Son christ?
7 but Yahweh said to Samuel, 'Take no notice of his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him;God does not see as human beings see; they look at appearances but Yahweh looks at the heart.'	7 Le Seigneur dit à Samuel: N'ayez égard ni à sa bonne mine ni à sa taille avantageuse, parce que Je l'ai rejeté, et que Je ne juge pas avec les yeux des hommes; car l'homme ne voit que ce qui paraît au dehors, mais le Seigneur regarde le coeur.
8 Jesse then cal ed Abinadab and presented him to Samuel, who said, 'Yahweh has not chosen this oneeither.'	8 Isaï appella ensuite Abinadab, et le présenta à Samuel. Et Samuel lui dit: Ce n'est point lui non plus que le Seigneur a choisi.
9 Jesse then presented Shammah, but Samuel said, 'Yahweh has not chosen this one either.'	9 Il lui présenta Samma; et Samuel lui dit: Le Seigneur n'a pas non plus choisi celui-là.
10 Jesse thus presented seven of his sons to Samuel, but Samuel said to Jesse, 'Yahweh has notchosen these.'	10 Isaï fit donc venir ses sept fils devant Samuel; et Samuel lui dit: Dieu n'a choisi aucun de ceux-ci.
11 He then asked Jesse, 'Are these al the sons you have?' Jesse replied, 'There is stil one left, theyoungest; he is looking after the sheep.' Samuel then said to Jesse, 'Send for him, for we shal not sit down toeat until he arrives.'	11 Alors Samuel dit à Isaï: Sont-ce là tous vos fils? Isaï lui répondit: Il reste encore le plus jeune, qui garde les brebis. Envoyez le chercher, dit Samuel; car nous ne nous mettrons point à table qu'il ne soit venu.
12 Jesse had him sent for; he had ruddy cheeks, with fine eyes and an attractive appearance. Yahwehsaid, 'Get up and anoint him: he is the one!'	12 Isaï l'envoya donc chercher et le présenta à Samuel. Or il était blond, beau à contempler, et d'une physionomie agréable. Le Seigneur lui dit: Levez-vous, oignez-le, car c'est lui.
13 At this, Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him, surrounded by his brothers; and the spirit ofYahweh seized on David from that day onwards. Samuel, for his part, set off and went to Ramah.	13 Samuel prit donc la corne pleine d'huile, et il l'oignit au milieu de ses fréres. Et dès lors l'Esprit du Seigneur fut toujours en David. Et se levant, Samuel retourna à Ramatha.
14 Now the spirit of Yahweh had withdrawn from Saul, and an evil spirit from Yahweh afflicted him withterrors.	14 Or l'Esprit du Seigneur se retira de Saül, qui était agité par un esprit mauvais envoyé par le Seigneur.
15 Saul's servants said to him, 'An evil spirit from God is undoubtedly the cause of your terrors.	15 Alors les officiers de Saül lui dirent: Voici qu'un mauvais esprit envoyé de Dieu vous agite.
16 Let our lord give the order, and your servants who wait on you wil look for a skilled harpist; when theevil spirit from God comes over you, he wil play and it wil do you good.'	16 Que notre seigneur commande, et vos serviteurs, qui sont auprès de vous, chercheront un homme qui sache toucher la harpe, afin qu'il en joue lorsque le mauvais esprit envoyé par le Seigneur vous agitera, et que vous en receviez du soulagement.
17 Saul said to his attendants, 'Find me, please, a man who plays wel , and bring him to me.'	17 Saül dit à ses officiers: Cherchez-moi donc quelqu'un qui sache bien jouer de la harpe, et amenez-le moi.
18 One of the servants then spoke up and said, 'I have seen one of the sons of Jesse the Bethlehemite:he is a skil ed player, a brave man and a fighter, well spoken, good-looking and Yahweh is with him.'	18 Et l'un d'entre eux répondit: J'ai vu l'un des fils d'Isaï le Bethléémite, qui sait jouer de la harpe. C'est aussi un jeune homme très robuste, propre à la guerre, sage dans ses paroles, et plein de beauté; et le Seigneur est avec lui.
19 So Saul sent messengers to Jesse with the order, 'Send me your son David (who is with the sheep).'	19 Saül fit donc dire à Isaï: Envoyez-moi votre fils David, qui est avec vos troupeaux.
20 Jesse took five loaves, a skin of wine and a kid, and sent them to Saul by his son David.	20 Isaï prit aussitôt un âne qu'il chargea de pain, d'une amphore de vin et d'un chevreau, et il les envoya à Saül par son fils David.
21 David went to Saul and entered his service; Saul became very fond of him and David became hisarmour-bearer.	21 David vint trouver Saül, et se présenta devant lui. Et Saül l'aima extrêmement, et le fit son écuyer.
22 Saul then sent a message to Jesse, 'Let David stay in my service, since he has won my favour.'	22 Il envoya ensuite dire à Isaï: Que David demeure auprès de moi, car il a trouvé grâce à mes yeux.
23 And whenever the spirit from God came over Saul, David would take a harp and play; Saul wouldthen be soothed; it would do him good, and the evil spirit would leave him.	23 Ainsi toutes les fois que le mauvais esprit envoyé par le Seigneur se saisissait de Saül, David prenait sa harpe et en jouait; et Saül en était soulagé, et se trouvait mieux, car l'esprit malin se retirait de lui.
