1 As people who are familiar with the Law, brothers, you cannot have forgotten that the law can control aperson only during that person's lifetime.	1 Ignorez-vous, mes frères (car je parle à des personnes qui connaissent la loi), que la loi a de l'autorité sur l'homme aussi longtemps qu'il vit?
2 A married woman, for instance, is bound to her husband by law, as long as he lives, but when herhusband dies all her legal obligation to him as husband is ended.	2 Ainsi une femme mariée est liée par la loi à son mari, tant qu'il est vivant; mais si son mari meurt, elle est dégagée de la loi qui la liait à son mari.
3 So if she were to have relations with another man while her husband was still alive, she would betermed an adulteress; but if her husband dies, her legal obligation comes to an end and if she then has relationswith another man, that does not make her an adulteress.	3 Si donc, du vivant de son mari, elle se donne à un autre homme, elle sera appelée adultère; mais si son mari meurt, elle est affranchie de la loi, de sorte qu'elle n'est point adultère si elle se donne à un autre homme.
4 In the same way you, my brothers, through the body of Christ have become dead to the Law and soyou are able to belong to someone else, that is, to him who was raised from the dead to make us live fruitful y for God.	4 C'est pourquoi, mes frères, vous aussi vous êtes morts à la loi par le corps du Christ, afin d'appartenir à un Autre qui est ressuscité des morts, afin que nous produisions des fruits pour Dieu.
5 While we were stil living by our natural inclinations, the sinful passions aroused by the Law wereworking in al parts of our bodies to make us live lives which were fruitful only for death.	5 Car lorsque nous étions dans la chair, les passions coupables, excitées par la loi, agissaient dans nos membres, et leur faisaient produire des fruits pour la mort.
6 But now we are released from the Law, having died to what was binding us, and so we are in a newservice, that of the spirit, and not in the old service of a written code.	6 Mais maintenant nous avons été dégagés de la loi de mort dans laquelle nous étions retenus; de sorte que nous servons dans la nouveauté de l'esprit, et non dans la vétusté de la lettre.
7 What should we say, then? That the Law itself is sin? Out of the question! All the same, if it had notbeen for the Law, I should not have known what sin was; for instance, I should not have known what it meant tocovet if the Law had not said: You are not to covet.	7 Que dirons-nous donc? La loi est-elle péché? Loin de là! Mais je n'ai connu le péché que par la loi; car je n'aurais pas connu la concupiscence, si la loi n'eût dit: Tu ne convoiteras pas.
8 But, once it found the opportunity through that commandment, sin produced in me al kinds ofcovetousness; as long as there is no Law, sin is dead.	8 Mais le péché, ayant saisi l'occasion, a produit en moi par le commandement toutes sortes de convoitises; car, sans la loi, le péché était mort.
9 Once, when there was no Law, I used to be alive; but when the commandment came, sin came to life	9 Et moi, je vivais autrefois sans loi; mais quand le commandement est venu, le péché a repris la vie,
10 and I died. The commandment was meant to bring life but I found it brought death,	10 et moi, je suis mort; et il s'est trouvé que le commandement, qui devait me donner la vie, m'a donné la mort.
11 because sin, finding its opportunity by means of the commandment, beguiled me and, by means of it,kil ed me.	11 Car le péché, ayant pris occasion du commandement, m'a séduit, et par lui m'a fait mourir.
12 So then, the Law is holy, and what it commands is holy and upright and good.	12 Ainsi la loi est sainte, et le commandement est saint, juste et bon.
13 Does that mean that something good resulted in my dying? Out of the question! But sin, in order to beidentified as sin, caused my death through that good thing, and so it is by means of the commandment that sinshows its unbounded sinful power.	13 Ce qui est bon est-il donc devenu pour moi la mort? Loin de là! Mais le péché, pour se manifester comme péché, m'a causé la mort par une chose bonne, afin que, par le commandement, le péché devînt une source extrêmement abondante e péchés.
14 We are wel aware that the Law is spiritual: but I am a creature of flesh and blood sold as a slave tosin.	14 Car nous savons que la loi est spirituelle; mais moi, je suis charnel, vendu au péché.
15 I do not understand my own behaviour; I do not act as I mean to, but I do things that I hate.	15 Car je ne sais pas ce que je fais; le bien que je veux, je ne le fais pas; mais le mal que je hais, je le fais.
16 While I am acting as I do not want to, I still acknowledge the Law as good,	16 Or, si je fais ce que je ne veux pas, je consens à la loi, reconnaissant qu'elle est bonne.
17 so it is not myself acting, but the sin which lives in me.	17 Ainsi ce n'est plus moi qui fais cela, mais c'est le péché qui habite en moi.
18 And really, I know of nothing good living in me -- in my natural self, that is -- for though the wil to dowhat is good is in me, the power to do it is not:	18 Car je sais que le bien n'habite pas en moi, c'est-à-dire, dans ma chair: en effet, vouloir est à ma portée; mais accomplir ce qui est bon, je ne le puis.
19 the good thing I want to do, I never do; the evil thing which I do not want -- that is what I do.	19 Car je ne fais pas le bien que je veux; mais je fais le mal que je ne veux pas.
20 But every time I do what I do not want to, then it is not myself acting, but the sin that lives in me.	20 Or si je fais ce que je ne veux pas, ce n'est plus moi qui le fais; mais c'est le péché qui habite en moi.
21 So I find this rule: that for me, where I want to do nothing but good, evil is close at my side.	21 Lorsque je veux faire le bien, je trouve donc cette loi: le mal réside en moi.
22 In my inmost self I dearly love God's law,	22 Car je me complais dans la loi de Dieu, selon l'homme intérieur;
23 but I see that acting on my body there is a different law which battles against the law in my mind. So Iam brought to be a prisoner of that law of sin which lives inside my body.	23 mais je vois dans mes membres une autre loi, qui lutte contre la loi de mon esprit, et qui me rend captif sous la loi du péché qui est dans mes membres.
24 What a wretched man I am! Who wil rescue me from this body doomed to death?	24 Malheureux homme que je suis! qui me délivrera de ce corps de mort?
25 God -- thanks be to him -- through Jesus Christ our Lord. So it is that I myself with my mind obey thelaw of God, but in my disordered nature I obey the law of sin.	25 La grâce de Dieu, par Jésus-Christ notre Seigneur. Ainsi donc, moi-même je suis soumis par l'esprit à la loi de Dieu; mais par la chair, à la loi du péché.
