1 Every friend declares his friendship, but there are friends who are friends in name only.	1 Ogni amico dirà; feci amistade. Ma elli è amico per lo nome solo. Or non hai tu tristizia (di cotale amico) di qui alla morte?
2 Is it not a sorrow unto death when your bosom companion becomes your enemy?	2 Il compagno della mensa e l'amico si convertono a nimistade.
3 "Alas, my companion! Why were you created to blanket the earth with deceit?"	3 O presunzione malvagissima! onde se' tu creata di coprire l'arida malizia e lo inganno di colui?
4 A false friend will share your joys, but in time of trouble he stands afar off.	4 Il compagno (nella mensa) nel diletto s' allegrerae coll' amico; e nel tempo della tribulazione fia suo avversario.
5 A true friend will fight with you against the foe, against your enemies he will be your shield-bearer.	5 Questo compagno (non) si conduole per lo amico, per cagione del ventre; contro allo nimico prenderae lo scudo.
6 Forget not your comrade during the battle, and neglect him not when you distribute your spoils.	6 Non ti dimenticare l'amico tuo nell' animo tuo; e non dimenticherai di colui nelle opere tue.
7 Every counselor points out a way, but some counsel ways of their own;	7 Non ti consigliare col suocero tuo; di coloro che sono gelosi nascondi il consiglio tuo.
8 Be on the alert when one proffers advice, find out first of all what he wants. For he may be thinking of himself alone; why should the profit fall to him?	8 Ogni consigliere manifesta il consiglio; ma egli è anco consigliere in sè medesimo.
9 He may tell you how good your way will be, and then stand by to watch your misfortune.	9 Guarda l'anima tua dallo (reo) consigliere; sappi prima quale sia la sua necessitade; ed elli penserà
10 Seek no advice from one who regards you with hostility; from those who envy you, keep your intentions hidden.	10 forse di (non) mettere la pertica nella terra e dirae a te:
11 Speak not to a woman about her rival, nor to a coward about war, to a merchant about business, to a buyer about value, to a miser about generosity, to a cruel man about mercy, to a lazy man about work, to a seasonal laborer about the harvest, to an idle slave about a great task: pay no attention to any advice they give.	11 Buona è la via tua; e staratti dirimpetto per vedere quello che t'avviene.
12 Instead, associate with a religious man, who you are sure keeps the commandments; Who is like-minded with yourself and will feel for you if you fall.	12 Con l'uomo irreligioso tratta della santitade, e collo ingiusto della giustizia, e colla femina di quelle cose ch' ella invidia; col pauroso della guerra; col mercatante tratta di passare altrove (per la mercatanzia ch' elli hae); col comperatore tratta della vendita, collo invidioso, di quelle cose che si vogliono donare;
13 Then, too, heed your own heart's counsel; for what have you that you can depend on more?	13 collo crudele, della pietade, col disonesto, della onestade, collo lavoratore de' campi, di tutti li tempi;
14 A man's conscience can tell him his situation better than seven watchmen in a lofty tower.	14 collo operaio che sta per anno, dello compimento dello anno; col pigro servo, di molto lavorare; non credere a costoro in ogni consiglio.
15 Most important of all, pray to God to set your feet in the path of truth.	15 Ma sii continuo con l' uomo santo; con qualunque tu conoscerai che guardi il timore di Dio,
16 A word is the source of every deed; a thought, of every act.	16 e la cui anima è secondo l'anima tua, e che quando vacillerai nelle tenebre, (non) averae compassione di te.
17 The root of all conduct is the mind; four branches it shoots forth:	17 E ordina teco cuore di buono consiglio; non ti sia alcuna cosa più cara di quello.
18 Good and evil, death and life, their absolute mistress is the tongue.	18 L'anima dell' uomo santo annunzia alcuna volta cose vere, più che li sette savi che seggono alti alla vista.
19 A man may be wise and benefit many, yet be of no use to himself.	19 E in tutte queste cose priega l' Altissimo, che dirizzi la via tua nella veritade.
20 Though a man may be wise, if his words are rejected he will be deprived of all enjoyment.	20 Inanzi a tutte l' opere tue, vera parola vadi dinanzi da te; e proceda stabile consiglio inanzi a ogni atto.
21 When a man is wise to his own advantage, the fruits of his knowledge are seen in his own person;	21 La malvagia parola cambierae il cuore; dello quale quattro parti nascono: bene e male, vita e morte; e la continua lingua sì è loro signoreggiatrice
22 When a man is wise to his people's advantage, the fruits of his knowledge are enduring:	22 L'uomo savio molti ammaestroe, ed è suave della sua anima.
23 Limited are the days of one man's life, but the life of Israel is days without number.	23 Colui che parla sofisticamente, sì è odioso; in ogni cosa ingannarae.
24 One wise for himself has full enjoyment, and all who see him praise him;	24 Non è a lui data grazia da Dio; ogni sapienza hae fraudata.
25 One wise for his people wins a heritage of glory, and his name endures forever.	25 Il savio è savio dell' anima sua; il frutto del suo senno sì è laudabile.
26 My son, while you are well, govern your appetite so that you allow it not what is bad for you;	26 L'uomo savio ammaestra il suo popolo, e li frutti del senno suo sono fedeli.
27 For not every food is good for everyone, nor is everything suited to every taste.	27 L'uomo savio si empierae di benedizioni, e coloro che il vederanno, il loderanno.
28 Be not drawn after every enjoyment, neither become a glutton for choice foods,	28 La vita dell' uomo si è numero di dì; ma li dì (del popolo) d' Israel sono innumerabili.
29 For sickness comes with overeating, and gluttony brings on biliousness.	29 Il savio nel popolo erediterà onore; il nome suo sarà vivente in eterno.
30 Through lack of self-control many have died, but the abstemious man prolongs his life.	30 Figliuolo, nella vita tua cerca l'anima tua; e s'ella fia rea, non le dare signoria.
	31 Però che tutte le cose non si convengono a ciascuno, e non piace a ciascuna anima ogni generazione.
	32 Non essere desideroso in ogni mangiare, e non ti gettare su ciascuna vivanda.
	33 In molti mangiari fia infirmitade; il desiderio s' appresserà infino alla collera.
	34 Molti morirono per lo soperchio mangiare; e a colui che s'astiene cresce la vita.
